Using 1st ed campaign in 2nd ed

By Moeda, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello,

A friend of mine recently acquired the 1st edition of descent and a few expansions and our group had a lot of fun playing it, thus we took a quick look on the 2nd edition changes and decided to try it with the conversion pack. we just ordered it but still it didnt arrive.

My question is if we will be able to utilize the campaigns and its elements from the 1st ed on the new games or if we will only be able to take the miniatures from the first game into the second?

Sorry for any mistakes with my english and thanks in advance

The 2nd Edition Conversion Kit is only intended to bring miniatures (heroes and monsters) from the 1st Edition into the 2nd Edition Ruleset. Nothing else (lieutenants, maps, quests, conditions, tiles, etc.) are used.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people somewhere have rewritten the 1st edition quests to fit the 2nd edition rules, but I haven't seen any of them. Check out the quest vault. If you can't find any, you could always rewrite them yourself.

Steve-O,

I downloaded the zip file from BGG you created for your conversion rules, but when I tried to open the zip file I got a message "cannot open the file, it doesn't appear to be a valid archive." I did repeat the process to see if the first attempt was corrupted or something, but the same thing happened again. Would it be possible for you to check it or re-zip it and/or send it to me? Thanks!

Sure thing. First I've heard of it not working, so I'll re-up it to the Geek. Maybe it got corrupted somehow. In the meantime, if you want me to send it to you directly, just PM me with an email address.

This is kinda cool cause playing through more scenarios would be great!

I don't have the first ed sets but I'd love to be able to play through it with 2nd ed stuff...

Hmmmn maybe FFG can make that a reality as well, now that they are releasing the figures from 1st ed.

They could certainly release a new set of 2E quests that are thematically similar to the old 1E quests, however, the amount of rewriting that would be required to make most of those quests work in 2E mechanics would be pretty heavy. It's not just a matter of picking 2E tiles that build a map vaguely similar to 1E quests and sprinkling in some 1E monster groups.

In D1E, the Heroes' goal was almost always to kill the Big Bad. Occasionally it was to find a macguffin, which generally involved killing a Big Bad to accomplish. The Overlord's goal was always "kill the heroes until they run out of Conquest Tokens."

In D2E, where heroes can keep standing up forever, the Overlord, at least, would need new goals. I tried rewriting the quests that way when I started my conversion package (above.) I soon realized just how much work was really involved in doing that - even if I tried to stick close to the original material - and so I gave up and re-added Conquest as a mechanic.

However, with this new co-op expansion coming out, there may yet be hope... Rewriting the D1E quests as co-op would probably be doable. Heroes have goals, game engine tries to kill them a lot...

Interesting... I guess it was a bigger overhaul than I thought.

Anyway, it's pretty expensive keeping up with all the new stuff.
