Tie Advanced Tempest Squad

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

Concussion Missiles, definitely. You've got loads of survivability already, and good maneuverability already. It's your DAMAGE that needs help, and an alpha strike of Concussions help with that.

This. Consider running Jonus + 3 Advanced to get better hits on your alpha strike too. See the TIE Advanced thread for some specific probabilities that I posted there.

How many people actually have 4 advanced?!?!

* raises hand *

I also have 6 A-wings. Is that bad? :P

P.S. I "only" have 9 TIE Fighters!

My 5 A-Wings feel lonely now. :(

hrm.. maybe I should pick up some more T/As..

To answer the OP's original question as I think i see where he's going with this having followed the fixing tie advanced post, i would go with 4 stealth devices. This leaves you enough points for one missile also which gives the opponent a. clear target which you can then play on.

Yeah 4 Advanced ^^ ... no bombers ... no Howlrunner ... no Vader.

4 Tempest with missiles ... or ... if Pete don't want to use missiles, because we know that missiles work and if Pete wins, it was not because the Advanced but because of the missiles:

Maarek Stele (30)

Markmanship

Storm Squadron Pilot (23)

Storm Squadron Pilot (23)

Storm Squadron Pilot (23)

= 99

I was thinking of that exact list mate.

It will be flying this weekend, followed by the 4 Tempest with Stealth for comparison.

:-)

I am looking forward to your report.

I never gave Maarek a chance to prove his value.

4 Tempest with Stealth? thats 96 points. ... at least you have initiative for sure then

I understand the idea is to evaluate the TIE-Advanced, but if 4 Tempests leaves 16 points for upgrades, you could just run a 15 or 16 point Tie along with them, Backstabber can flank, giving the opponent the choice of letting him slip behind them if they face the main TIE-Advanced force head on. Dark Curse presents a 5th ship with good defense. Black Squadron upgraded with Draw their Fire, or better yet Squad Leader. You could even upgrade 2 Tempests to Storms and have enough point for an Academy TIE for blocking duty. Thats the difference between rebel and empire, 4 rookies can't squeeze in a 5th wingman of any value, but 4 tempests could.

Maarek Stele

"This man is Maarek Stele. In the past two months he has shot down or disabled over nine hundred enemy fighters and destroyed two frigates."
"The man's a menace! Send a team of assassins to kill him."
"What? No, no, you misunderstand. He's one of ours, sir."
"One of ours? He shot down nine hundred of the enemy... in a TIE fighter?!"
"Precisely, sir."
"Promote him to captain, put his picture on cereal boxes and T-shirts, give him a book deal, a bonus of two million credits, and all the Twi'lek ***** he can eat."
―Imperial officers, discussing Maarek Stele

Tan Maarek Stele was a pilot of the Imperial Navy and an Emperor's Hand who eventually elevated to the status of Emperor's Reach. Like Darth Vader Luke Skywalker and Keyan Farlander Stele's Force-sensitivity enhanced his pilot skills to make him one of the greatest pilots in the Galactic Empire. In that capacity he flew as Vader's wingmate, served under Grand Admiral Thrawn and saved the life of Emperor Palpatine.

He was also well known as a test pilot, being one of the first to fly the TIE Avenger, and the first to fly both the TIE Defender and the Missile Boat into combat. He was also a "guinea pig" for some of Thrawn's more unusual tactics, such as using a TIE Bomber for defense.

Thought you were staying clear of vader?

But anyway, can't wait to hear result.

I was, I picked up on the "Death Squadron" idea.

I have just steeled myself and gone to 4 Tempest with Stealth. Let the test begin.

With Vader you can't go wrong :P

Good luck with the 4 Tempest

So,

we just finished playing and the results are VERY sad.

I was up against 3 Daggers with Fire Control and Heavy Laser Cannons.

(I had added one missile for the 4 spare points)

The Advanced has zero answer to the list I faced. With no 1 straight on its dial, you cannot tuck in behind the B and stay out of arc.

4 dice at all ranges with relocks stripped the shields and Stealth Devices without effort.

2 dice in return, sometimes 3 is no answer to the shields on a B-Wing even if you manage a hit.

The B can turn in close, you have to 4K.

I lost all 4 tempest for a few shields on one B and all the shields on another.

NEXT we drop stealth and add missiles of the Concussion variety.

A SAD SAD day for the Advanced.

Ah common. The most expensive Imperial starfighter can't be that bad!

Vader is crying! The Emperor is NOT amused.

Try Maarek and Storms :)

... and maybe you want to try Maarek with an alternate ability: "Your critical hits ignore the shields of your target"

if your opponent is fine with this version of Maarek ^^

I am going to try the missile variety next. Then characters.

I have not given up, I am merely shocked at how badly things went.

Keep it up! A pity I can't see you fighting ^^

This is the next list that will be tested.

Sad to hear.

But all is not lost i am also on the case, im sure we will find a way

The missiles will do the trick ... IF you can fire them before your ships are destroyed.

I flew that exact list the other night and was doing better than my first game, when we had to pack up..

First game I lost but had tempests 2x concussion missile, and 2x engine upgrades. My opponent chise one of my Han lists with 2 Awings.. I got the A winges easy enough, and still had 2 ships to take on Han, but I finally lost due a couple bad die rolls and losing on ship just before I could fire the missile.. but overall the missiles were ineffective, so might just opt for shield upgrades or maybe all engine upgrades to be more maneuverable

Engine Upgrades might be a very useful addition. That will be next up :-)

If you own 2 Falcons, this might be an option.

But I think an Alpha strike to destroy 1 of the 3 B-Wings quickly might be even more effective.

Especially with clusters + focus (ok then its no alpha)
