Ithilien Rangers

By Karlson, in Strategy and deck-building

With the conclusion of the Against the Shadow cycle, I decided to build a nice Gondorian Ranger deck to commemorate its ending. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Heroes: Faramir, Strider, Mirlonde --- Starting Threat: 28

Allies: Gandalf (3x), Ithilien Archer (3x), Ithilien Tracker
(3x), Anborn (3x), Warden of Healing (3x), Envoy of
Pelargir (3x), White Tower Watchman (2x), Master of Lore (2x)

Attachments: Ranger Spikes (3x), Forest Snare (3x),
Poisoned Stakes (2x), Ithilien Pit (2x), Ranger Bow (2x),
Scroll of Isildur (3x)

Events: Secret Paths (2x), Radagast's Cunning (2x),
Rumor From The Earth (2x), Risk Some Light (2x),
Lore of Imladris (3x), Mithrandir's Advice (3x)

I expand upon this a lot in my newest blog entry, check it out at the link below if you have a minute or two.

Do you find that you have enough will power to handle questing in most quests? That has been my biggest hurdle with trying to build a mono lore ranger deck.

Also, while I like radagast's cunning, do you feel like its redundant running with ithilien tracker? Especially if you play solo where you may only see one enemy come in the staging area per turn

To be honest, I always play two-handed, and this mono-Lore ranger deck has currently been accompanied by a Leadership/Tactics Gondor deck featuring Boromir, Imrahil, and Beregond. Pretty soon into most quests I am able to get Visionary Leadership onto Boromir, which helps questing to a great degree for both decks. So, I can't attest as to whether or not this deck would be effective all by itself. I would say that it is very powerful with scrying, card draw, and dealing with enemies all on its own, but it does lack in willpower in the early rounds.

I hadn't even thought about the similar effects of Radagast's Cunning and Ithilien Tracker until now, but you do bring up an excellent point. Of the two, I definitely prefer Radagast's Cunning over the tracker's ability, though, because its effect isn't blindly played like a lot of the ranger and trap effects are.

Yet, since they are so similar, I may consider dropping the two copies of Cunning and adding in the third Secret Paths and perhaps the third Risk Some Light event. Speaking of that one - I really like it! I have actually never used it in a deck before this one for some reason, but it is an absolutely amazing card that allows you to know exactly what's coming for the next round in a two-player game while also getting rid of something else altogether. Now, the price of 3 is expensive, but running a mono-Lore deck allows for more resources to be earned and spent than a dual-sphere deck. Additionally, the Scroll of Isildur can bring it back in a later turn for just 1 resource.

Ah... not solo & paired with a visionary Boromir.. invalidates most of my thoughts regarding your deck... oh well. (I've been playing with a solo, mono, lore, ranger deck lately with many allies not from Gondor. It often requires Gildor/haldir etc plus elf-stones early on to provide enough will power).

Dropping Radagast's Cunning to just use Ithilien Tracker makes sense.

What about including 'expecting mischief'? I especially like how this kills off low hit point enemies with 'when revealed' before they come into effect.

I do like Expecting Mischief, but lately it seems like the enemies consistently have between 4 and 6 hit points, making that card helpful but not extremely so. I have found the most use out of that in some of the Khazad-Dum based quests that are chalked full of weak, but nasty goblins.

In your mono-Lore deck aided by the Elves, what would you say are its greatest strengths and weaknesses?

Good point about high hit point enemies

Weakness; needs to get lot of cards in play to work well. The hero's are low hit point, low will power and low attack. (Denethor, Pippin & Mirlonde... considering swaping pippin for faramir).

Strengths; very low starting threat, lots of scrying, elf stones (erebor hammersmith to recycle) for expensive allies such as Gildor.

Once I have enough traps, bows, events, allies in play it almost feels like cheating.
