I'd actually be happy to see some more low-tech weapons, like an ordinary axe or sword that isn't a vibro weapon. .
They would probably inflict the same amount of damage, but just lose their qualities.

That's probably the easiest way to handle it.
Though if using a comparison of the combat knife and the vibroknife, not only would the low-tech versions not have things like Pierce or Vicious, but they'd also have two less hard points and their crit rating increased by 1.

That makes a lot of sense. I forgot about the lowered crit rating.
Edit - Also, drop the cost to 75 credits each and the rarity by two each.
Edited by FangGripI agree with the inclusion of an entertainer in the colonist class, I also tend to think that entrepeneur would be a good option. Someone setting out into the edge to find a way to make a lot of money from a mining operation for instance, I think this would be a class that might fit a potential Lando-type character. I think Politico just doesn't fit him and neither does smuggler if you ask me.
What would you have in mind for the entrepreneur?
A class that focusses on opportunities to make money, investing, running an illegal operation on a remote planet.
Skills to help you have other fringers work for you and being a middle man in business deals. It might be a good career to get easy acces to smuggling runs, colonist work, etc.
Now, this is mostly from a fluff standpoint of course but I'd figure the character could present something along the lines of a cross between a politico and a fringer for instance, perhaps some scoundrel thrown in the mix. I say this because what I think is 'missing' from the colonist career so far is an actual colonist.
Sounds like the Trader (possibly mixed with some Politico and/or Scoundrel) to me.
Trader would indeed be better than fringer indeed.
A cross between Politico and trader would be a good match I guess.
But, definitely from the Colonist career.
Edited by DanteRotterdamBased on what we've seen so far for splat material including modules, each book is attempting to offer a little bit of something for everyone: Species, specializations, gear and weapons, but also material for GMs including expanded settings and game running advice. I really like this approach, as I feel that I will get more bang for my buck regarding the usefulness of each book. For instance, after I am done with BtRim, I have three locations and new adversaries to mess around with, never mind recurring NPCs and Starships/Vehicles.
I got EtUnknown and am so far very happy with the approach. If they use a similar format with SoFortune (more of a campaign book than a module/career splat) then there should be lots to choose from, and I will be very happy to open my wallet.
That said, once all is said and done with EotE, I hope they do a series of G. Hits, condensing all of the resource offerings into a big tome. For instance, an arms and equipment guide, planet guide, etc. Just to cut down on all the books I have to flip through. Anyone remember the Monstrous Compendium binder? What a great idea that was. (seriously)

Your abreviations are weird... Just saying.
A couple of things that got me thinking, there are many characters in fiction that have an affinity towards a particular weapon of theirs. For instance, Kyle Katarn in the star wars universe has his Bryar pistol, Robin Hood has his long bow, Pete Hutter from the Adventures of Brisco County Jr. had his piece, and so on. Even Boba Fetts armour could fall into this category. Perhaps the Hired Gun will have as a signature ability an affinity or upgrade to a particular piece of equipment with extra damage, increased hard points, etc.
Someone mentioned a correlation between the talent decks and the availiable books, If that's the case then it will be Colonist and Smuggler most like.
Colonist should get an entertainer specialty, possibly a reprinted ambassador (maybe too close to politico) and I'm thinking Ranger, a defender for a new colony - maybe representing the local law. Quartermaster could work as well.
I like the idea of a "local lawman" type of specialization for the Colonist. Right now, it's a career that's almost totally focused on support roles (party face for Politico, party healer for Doctor, and exposition font for Scholar), so having a specialization that's geared towards a more active roll in rough & tumble situations wouldn't be a bad thing. Combine it with the Colonist's strong base in social skills, and you could have a PC that's savvy in both social and combat situations.

That would be a good change. Something less killy and more Odo (DS9) would be nice.
I'm not sure what an entertainer in Star Wars as a career would bring to the table. Don't get me wrong. A compelling character can be an entertainer but as a full fledged career... That said, I wouldn't mind seeing entertaining expanded upon.
I also like how they are giving a species per career. Like Chris's for fringer, Duros for scout and Toydarian for trader. I hope they keep this tradition.
The idea of entertainer takes me back to Star Wars Galaxies. If you've taken the time to dust off the rose colored goggles that's not necessarily a fantastic place to go back to. But I guess if you want to hop up on a table and wiggle your leku more power to ya. It's a big universe out there.
Entertainers don't have to be twi'lek dancing girls. They could be musicians, actors, athletes, flair bartenders, comedians. The star wars universe has lots of live entertainment. There's no holonet so no movie network or cable. Heck, no internet so people have to go out to a show.
Sy Snootles was on the clone wars, shows what an entertainer can do when not.. entertaining. These could all be covers for someones criminal doings. Also, a kloo horn player with an addiction could be fun to play.

It's funny when you say face characters are support role. In number of groups I've been part of, the combat guys are support for the face's plans.
I think entertainers would be an extremely viable character type. Indeed an excellent concept to build a campaign around is a troupe of entertainers, be they a band, acrobats, a variety show, animal trainers, etc. Characters of a number of other professions could fit into this.
Local lawman makes me think of Outland. And that leads me to think of miners and other blue collar types. Sure a lot of that work is going to be done by droids, but droids can't replace people. For a good example of a miner prospector lead character look at "Pappy" Jack Holloway in Little Fuzzy. But don't look too closely or you may start to question where the inspiration for Ewoks really came from...
Outland makes me think of Zardoz. Thanks for that. ![]()

I'd buy it. It's an archetype that fits the setting but hasn't really been explored in the movies or the earlier RPGs.

Well, most groups I've been in and have heard about, the party face tends to be more on the sidelines, particularly in an more action-oriented RPG such as Star Wars, particularly in contrast to systems like FATE/Dresden Files where words truly can be weapons sharper than knives or more scalding than a juiced-up fireball.
I played an actor during the beta (actually the Rodian who tried and failed to make it big as Greedo himself, so meta), and used the Scoundrel spec (and Scout for a little action star flavor), and I gotta say I had great fun. However, I'm not sure I need a spec about Entertaining. Deceit worked just fine for our purposes. I'm sure the FFG guys could come up with something that would make me reconsider, but I just don't see the niche, per se.
More importantly, I don't need EotE to jump all the way into Warhammer Fantasy territory with a Nerf Herder spec, although a Beast Tamer would totally be awesome (to clarify, I would play a Rat Catcher in a heartbeat, just not in SW).
On the Entertainer track again, I could see a Con Man instead, someone who takes fibs and white lies to the Nth by playing their mark all the way to debt.
I guess this might be a cross-post from AoR, but I'd like to see some Imperial centric slanted careers. Something like an Imperial official or an Agent of the Empire.
I do like the idea of an entertainer class. Would have to bring something new to the table besides charm/deception, but I can believe FFG will deliver.
