What's Your Buying Rationale?

By R22, in X-Wing

I'm curious. When you buy, is there a rationale to it? For instance, if you own 8 TIF/F, is it because you actually play with or use 8 regularly? Or the Lambda, is it because you want a specific card but then you end up with a number of duplicate models you don't often use? To collect? Just your faction? For customization?

I personally buy from both factions and am trying to keep them in ratios reflective of the SW universe. I supply everything for my local gaming group as well. So X-wings and TIE/Fs are my baseline ships, with fewer TIE/Int and A-wings, and only one Falcon. It puts limits on what I have available but my friends and I like to play 'within' the confines of their natural numbers in-universe. It creates a natural meta-narrative. So long as I have at least one of every ship and they're in proportion, that's what I'm shooting for.

So what's your buying rationale?

-Buy by faction

-Buy to supply myself and my gaming group (me)

-Buy for desired list

-Buy to collect

-Buy for cards

-Buy for models

-Buy to reflect SW universe (me)

-Buy because it's SW and right in front of me (to which I'm incredibly sympathetic/drawn)

I am very much like yourself, i buy so i can have a reasonable selection for both factions, at the moment i have 3 X`s, 6 Tie`s, 2X Tie/Int, Tie/bomber, y wing, A-wing, B-wing, 1x, Tie/Adv, falcon, Hwk290 Lambda and firespray.

For the last 2 waves i generally buy 2 of the fighters and 1 of the larger ships,If i need any more i will by them on a case by case basses.

A friend of mine has a different view, he will buy enough ships so that he can field a 100pt squad of each type,

i buy what i personally like to play, trying to keep a balance between factions (as i play both but i also want to lend out squads to friends to play against - this is why i own 8 ties - so i can play against them).

upgrades are also an imp consideration - the reason i will be buying one of the newest rebel transport with x-wing escort is i want the new x-wing pilots and any new upgrades. its also kinda cool they r looking at new epic rules and campaign style rules as this is what casual players have been wanting most - playable scenarios/campaign style missions.

Fun topic.

I have to agree with Joe Boss....but I usually by enough for myself and daughter....but I do believe it will only be one each of the cr-90 and transport.

I originally bought to supply my group. I own all the ships listed in my signature except one TIE bomber that another guy paid for, but it stays with the collection.

But now that we have more ships than we need, and almost 2 of everything (waiting on TIE Advances...) I mostly buy so that I can repaint them. I like to keep at least one normal version, then have my custom guys.

I'm in the minority here in that I refuse to double dip and buy duplicate ships. The only time I'd consider it is if the ship and /or cards are different like the imperial aces for example. I know that limits my squad options but I can't justify the extra costs after all I've invested already. So right now I have 1 aw, 1 bw, 2 xw, 1 yw, 1 hwk, 1 ta, 1 tb, 3 tf, and 1 ti.

I buy for cinematic campaigns. So I try and keep evefyt6hing to a relative level.

While I am just starting out I think I will keep with the way things were in the movie, 1 Firespray, 1 falcon. a few Xwings and maybe 6 TIE's and a couple of each of the rest of the small ships.

I bought so that I could field 100 points of every craft (except for the YT-1300 and the Shuttle).

Edit: And the TIE Advanced

At this point, having enough ships to run almost every list, I buy to fill slots in my foam. ...

I buy for three reasons.

First, upgrade cards. You can never have enough Heavy Laser Cannons or Push the Limits.

Second, I buy in order to have enough ships for every conceivable squad. I don't yet have enough Y-wings, though.

Third, I like to paint stuff and I need plenty of some types so I can have multiple paint schemes. The A-wing in particular really lends itself to many cool schemes.

Buy to collect and buy more in preparation for running an all xwing or all interceptor flight in epic play

When I started I wanted a bit of everything. But I'm a painter, so now I've got a decent force I pick up new models when I get close to running out (I always like have 2 or 3 models on the painting table in case I don't feel like painting one of them). When I get to this place I pick up models based on what I feel would be fun to paint, what would be fun to play and to fill in gaps. In the end I will probably have enough to play most forces. I like being able to choose a force on whim.

It don't look right if it is out of sync, does it?

Brother you know you will need two of the cute little Transports with their new neat escort X-Wing!

When I started the game I decided to buy at least one of each model to try them out .

Then I buy more of the ones i like, so after playing with the B-wing I got 3 more:)

Yeah I love the Bees too.

I buy for mostly all of these reasons, I'am addicted to Star Wars, since 1977, being a collector of Wings of War, First and Second, it was so natural to get into this game to the fullest. I can create nearly all the squads, buy to fill my Battlefoam bag, will love the cinematic campaign because I like big scenarios and I'm thinking into painting 2 of my firesprays into Krassis and Scarlet, and my second falcon in a different paint scheme.

I ordered 3 Imperial aces so that I will hae a wing all of the same color, for both ships, 2 transports and 1 corvette for cinematic play.

I wait anxiously for the shipping of all of these, and my additionals wave 1 ships. Hope they arrive soon.

Ah go on and get a set...

:P

I buy one of everything, but I'm very much a Rebellion player, so I plan to have two or three of what I want/need. I am really enjoying my 2 A-Wing and 2 B-Wing squad right now, but I'd love another X-Wing.

Also, I paint a little bit. I'm slow, but I enjoy my work. :3

I put together a game so that my friends could come over and play and I would have a pretty decent chance of fielding whatever 100pt squad they dream up. So, yes, I collect both factions. And yes, I have 4 Advanced Ties. I only have 4 Ys, but I feel that no-one in their right mind would ever build a squad of five of these without turrets. I only have two shuttles as well. I'm not sure if I'll ever get up to four, two seems more than enough. I do have five As and five Tie Interceptors. And, with all these ships I have plenty of upgrade cards. We've never had to use copies.

Is this excessive? Maybe. But it has kept us able to play whatever the guys and I come up with using the various online squad builders. And that makes for a lot of fun. I have two nephews who'll be old enough to play soon, and I know they'll have a blast as well.

I like to buy the fighters in multiples of 3s and 4s. Just like being able to build groups of 3 or 4 of a particular fighter. The HWK was originally going to break my rule, but I fell in love with the sculpt. I do tend to buy more for the Imps than the Rebels. The Aces/Transport did stop me from getting more X-wings, since 4 seemed like a good amount. Sadly, the Aces pack is going to send me into OCD fits. It is going to be tough to only have 2 each of the striped and red Interceptors. I don't want or need a full squadron of Interceptors.

Luckily, I tend to be okay with smaller amounts of the large ships. Happy with only one Lambda, though a second Falcon is tempting.
