I'm away from book right now, but there's an unarmed speeder bike, a land speeder, and two (?) swoops. There's one capital ship (an exploration frigate) and a number smaller ships (like the Ghtroc 720!). I'll spill more in a few hours when I'm off of work.
Enter the Unknown has shipped
Thanks for all the tidbits HappyDaze!
Toydarians have Hoverer which allows them to ignore the effects of difficult terrain that would add Maneuver costs. That's it. No worries that flying is game-breaking in this version.
There are also some new Obligations (like Sponsorship) that are aimed at Explorers, but can probably be used by any character type.
Darned formatting snafus. Donovan Morningfire said:
"I wonder if MM is holding your order until all the books you pre-ordered are in stock."
That's exactly what's happening. I remember when X-Wing first released, but the dice packs were running late, we all had to ask them to split the dice out of our orders so that we could get the ships on time.
I went for Amazon.ca this time (since shipping costs from the US negate the reduced MM cost anyway), and they don't even know when they'll be getting their stock! ![]()
Disappointed Chiss are Pres 1 when everything about them seems to suggest they are a charismatic and attractive race.
I'm speculating, but I think the designers may have had a reason for it. The fluff in the species entry mentions that the Chiss have a tendency to be "cold and calculating." I think the low presence score has less to do with a lack of personal charisma, and more to do with their tendency to be perceived as cold, rude, unfriendly, or abrupt by the galaxy at large. They're beautiful, but (tend to be) haughty and elitist.
Thank you very much HappyDaze, we Archeologists are most grateful. And apart from these things, I am interested almost about everything in this particular book, but, let us stay focused on one aspect: How's the art in the book? Isn't it too few? I guess it will be as I can't get enough of it, but doesn't hurt to know opinion of the others!
The art is absolutely gorgeous. The two-page spreads at the beginning of individual chapters are simply breathtaking, and I found myself getting lost in the one for Chapter III and just staring for a while.
There are a few pieces of art that we've already seen- mostly from promotional material about the book itself, but nearly all of it is brand new.
I've sent a PM to polyheadronman, but I think it can't hurt to ask here as well:
My group is coming together for character creation tomorrow, and one of them really wants to play a Big Game Hunter. Seeing as this book won't reach us until the end of the year, I was wondering if anyone who already has it could give us the necessary information so my friend can build a BGH tomorrow. I think all we need are the additional Career Skills and maybe the first couple of Talents?
Thanks in advance. ![]()

Chiss having Presence 1 is like Wookiees having Willpower 1. There are good arguments both for and against it.
Forager, Grit, Stalker, Outdoorsman all at 5xp. Career Skills listed in a previous post.
Thanks! And I can't believe I missed your other posts. ![]()
Any chance we could get a listing of what the new vehicles are?
I started a new teaser thread. This is the subject of my first post. Enjoy!
Just saw the breakdown on the Chiss.
I'm assuming they also get the default base of 10 for their Wound and Strain Thresholds as well as 100 XP? I was concerned about the USM's version of the Chiss being too powerful, and it would seem that if the answer to my question is "yes" than my concern was accurate.
I can see them having a low Presence, much like D&D monsters having a high Charisma but an atrocious physical appearance, or vice versa. They may look very attractive, but as Presence is more than just looks, it makes sense that their aloof demeanor makes it hard for people to relate to them. Thrawn (the archetypical Chiss) was a pretty cold individual, but made up for it with maximum ranks in Leadership to inspire the troops under his command as well as having maxed out his Knowledge (Warfare) skill as well.
Dono,
Chiss are 2 2 3 2 2 1, with 10+/10+ and 100XP to start.
They get a bonus rank in Cool, subject to the 2 rank cap for creation. However, they start with Infravision (!) which lets them remove one setback added based on lighting conditions.

Absolutely. I'm by no means taking a pro/con stance on it. I was merely speculating about what the designers may have had in mind when they made that decision.
I swear, if FFG statted Ewoks with Brawn 3 and a free rank in Computers, there would be people here defending it! ![]()
(... because, err, it's a well-known fact that 'nub nub' is used as a password in 90% of computer systems...!)

Ok, now I have to make an Ewok Marauder/Slicer...

The starting XP is enough to make pretty much any race look like any other. It's hardly an issue. Having 1 starting stat just means you have to dig down to dedication to get a 5 in that stat rather than starting with it. At 20 XP/session that is 4 sessions in.
Chiss gets a 1 in presence yet a free level in Cool, a presence stat?? just doesn't make sense.
Edited by RockSoldierI'm surprised at the infravision for chiss. They are supposed to be near human with above average night vision. The presence is understandable, from a slightly xenophobic and secretive nature of their government and the limited knowledge of the species could further attribute to it.
I don't think the 1 presence is such a drawback to playing a politico. But then, I don't try to maximize my chances for winning the game. A less than perfect score can be a great roleplaying opportunity. Don't dismiss it out of hand.

I logged out and logged back in using "nub nub" for my password and came right back in.
What do you know that the rest of us don't? ![]()

They are cold and standoffish, but that doesn't translate to resisting social actions or a penalty to ambushing.

Are there people here who have been doing that?

I know only what the Ewoks tell me! ![]()

Just a humorous observation, really.
I recall some fairly bizarre justifications for some of the crazy stats FFG gave some of the species.
At this point I think they're just deciding the stats randomly, so I'll stick with Donovan's version.
No news on Amazon.co.uk… This sucks!

Well, seems that the Chiss went from "maybe too good" (USM version) to "kinda underwhelming" (FFG version). I was kinda hoping that FFG would steer away from the "special vision" stuff that was rampant in the d20 versions; though oddly, the Chiss in d20 didn't have any "special vision."
The bonus rank in Cool is something I can kinda see, as they're known for being pretty level-headed, and I considered dropping Vigilance for Cool during the last pass-thru of the USM.
As I said earlier in the thread, I can see the design rationale for the choices the authors made. I don't 100% agree with them, but I can see where they're coming from.
