Dono,

Chiss are 2 2 3 2 2 1, with 10+/10+ and 100XP to start.

They get a bonus rank in Cool, subject to the 2 rank cap for creation. However, they start with Infravision (!) which lets them remove one setback added based on lighting conditions.

Well, seems that the Chiss went from "maybe too good" (USM version) to "kinda underwhelming" (FFG version). I was kinda hoping that FFG would steer away from the "special vision" stuff that was rampant in the d20 versions; though oddly, the Chiss in d20 didn't have any "special vision."

The bonus rank in Cool is something I can kinda see, as they're known for being pretty level-headed, and I considered dropping Vigilance for Cool during the last pass-thru of the USM.

As I said earlier in the thread, I can see the design rationale for the choices the authors made. I don't 100% agree with them, but I can see where they're coming from.

It seems really odd to me that Chiss have Infravision while Trandoshans do not.

Yeah, as well as Sullustans (AoR Beta) not having any kind of vision perks, particularly as they're an underground species and one might suspect they'd have something to help them navigate in poor lighting conditions. Which is why Chiss having it strikes me odd, almost as if the author simply didn't know what else to give them.

The infravision seems a little tacked on, like they didn't know where to go after the initial stat block and the Cool upgrade.

Otherwise, I think the stat-block makes a lot of sense, actually.

They probably should have just bitten the bullet and given them 2 Cool and called it a day. That would have ended up with a race that is sub-par in being friendly, but ahead of the curve in keeping their cool.

I agree with Doc. I'm fine with how the Chiss turned out.

Does the book have more advice on trading, etc?

(I haven't looked into Happy's thread yet, as I don't want to know too many things before reading the book myself.)

Doc,

I'm thinking either a skill choice (Cool or Leadership) or maybe a +1 to their Strain Threshold would have been a better fit for the Chiss than infravision. Or, give them 110 XP instead instead of an added special ability.

Yeah. but 100xp with the 1,3 ability split already puts them ahead of the curve on stats. I agree with either the skill choice or strain would be a better fit too.

I don't think the 1 presence is such a drawback to playing a politico. But then, I don't try to maximize my chances for winning the game. A less than perfect score can be a great roleplaying opportunity. Don't dismiss it out of hand.

I can't like this enough!

I wish there was another career similar to politico, but like a criminal. Something that would lead to becoming a crime lord like Xizor. The background and my image for my Chiss politico would be more suited for something like that, and the associated skills may fit better.

We may see something like a fixer spec in a colonist book.

Well, Humans do still have the big perk of 2 non-career skills, which is worth roughly 20 XP on its own. Plus, a number of other species have a 3/1 ability split and a base XP budget of 100, so Chiss really aren't that far ahead of the game, even if given an extra 10 XP (which I suspect would be the measure of last resort for FFG).

Just got my book today when I got home from work. Now have some reading to do :D .

I just got mine, but I was smack in the middle of watching a Six Million Dollar Man three part episode with Fembots, so I didn't get much of a chance to read, beyond a quick skim. In fact, what the hell am I doing posting here when I could read before bed!

Anyone from Canada get this yet?

Yeh I have mine. Picked it up over the weekend and been reading it when I can.

Mind if I ask what part? (And when you picked if up) I'm trying to find when my regular place will get them from lion rampant.

I'm in Kingston, ON. Got it on saturday at my FLGS.

So far, my pre-ordered copy hasn't arrived. Got the shipping notification on Friday, but given where MM is located I wouldn't think it would take more than a couple days to show up.

If it's not here by tomorrow, I may contact MM and see if I can get some idea when it will show up.

At this rate, it would have been simpler to just buy a second copy from the FLGS who will have it in tomorrow.

Mine arrived yesterday (Monday Dec. 9) in IL via Miniature Market (USPS 2 day Priority).

It's a great book!

Mine arrived as well yesterday. Have some reading to do this weekend when the wife is out of town....game night!

My FLGS here in California had 2 on the shelf last Friday, which is when I grabbed mine. The guy I co-GM with went down the next day and grabbed the other.

Haven't read it cover to cover, but I like what I have read. I'm excited to see what signature abilities we will get for Hired Guns in Dangerous Covenants. I almost wouldn't mind seeing a new Career splat book every month now to get all of the careers represented before AOR hits the stores ~middle of next year.

Well, you may almost get your wish. According to the "Upcoming" page, Suns of Fortune is scheduled for January, and Dangerous Covenants has been updated to show a February release date. I think we're looking at an every-other-month schedule for the career books, now.

This is what I have seen over the last weeks... It is getting ridiculous by now.

I thought maybe if I paid no attention to it, it'd just arrive in good time (watched kettle, y'know?). But:

"Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date."

**** you Amazon.co.uk!
