Fixing the TIE Advanced

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

There's a reason why Vader chose a TIE Advanced! (There must be!)

Sure, it was because then everyone could tell he was even more powerful then they thought, because only someone that BA would fly in a ship that so clearly stood out from all the rest...

But it also showed he did suffer from a self confidence issue, because his was the only ship that had shields...

I think the Tie advanced and the A-Wing deserve and require a systems upgrade. Please Oh Please let there be an A-Wing/Tie Advanced Booster pack with this upgrade.

Systems upgrade was a great thing to add to the game.

I'm sure I heard somewhere that he started work on the X1 because Soontir was being hailed as a better fighter pilot than him.

You wanted it, you get it.

Credit goes to Duraham, for his creative yet simple and brilliant idea.

I really do like this idea. You could actually fly some interesting combo's of ship type and numbers. All Advanced now have a real use.

The Fire-Control System could also be seen as kind of a weapon booster. I like the idea of repeating attacks with TL and focus.

The problem is that it's still overpriced. The TIE Advanced was LESS maneuverable than a standard TIE Fighter, not more, so I have a hard time seeing advanced sensors on a TIE Advanced. Personally, I would just adjust the cost of the ship so it is more balanced, and save ideas like the 3-attack variant or system upgrades for the TIE Avenger or TIE Defender, where they really belong.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm putting together some numerical analysis scripts that pit Fleet vs Fleet and, with some statistical approximations, figure out which side will win based on firepower / HP / ships. It'll be interesting to see how the TIE Advanced fares with actual numbers, I'll let you know.

As much as I dislike messing with a successful system, I do like the system upgrade for the x1.. it's simple and doesn't add cost, making the ship slightly more cost effective in a list..

Admittedly I have not played tournaments, and have only played a few dozen games with opponents, but I really like the TIE advanced. To me it is the X-wing of the empires forces.. its just costly. Personally, I think it is so costly, because cinematically it was only really used by Vader.. I don't recall seeing and in the big fight scenes in the other 2 movies.. (maybe I need to go watch then again with some attention to imperial ships.) So possibly they were looking to keep their frequency in play low.. IDK maybe I'm wrong.. but it's possible.

This could be a great home rule and I will make a copy of the cards for myself and see what my group thinks..

The TIE Advanced was LESS maneuverable than a standard TIE Fighter, not more, so I have a hard time seeing advanced sensors on a TIE Advanced.

I'm not sure why how maneuverable a ship is, has any effect on how well the sensors work. If anything a less nimble ship would want better sensors to make up for it.

Personally, I would just adjust the cost of the ship so it is more balanced

Changing the cost of a ship is a pretty major deal. Would require some method of getting new cards to everyone who bought it, with the updated price. Errata wouldn't cut it IMO.

Tie-Advanced needs a title card badly. Making the ship cheaper isnt realistic imo. Giving it a title card that is free or very cheap and ramps up its power level is a better option.

Even a title card that allowed elite pilot abilities on the cheaper Tie-Advanced ships would be worth considering.

The new Royal Guard intercepters already allow two ship upgrades, so its likely any 'improvements' to the Tie-Advanced will be different again.

Maybe the Advanced is still overpriced. But with a System Upgrade slot it would finally see action.

I still like the System Upgrade idea, it makes no changes to game mechanics, requires no changes to points, doesn't change the Advanced's stats or dial.

It just adds some options and is an easy change.

It also doesn't go overboard and overpower the ship.

It's not hard to envision the x1 getting upgraded to and x2.

I love the look of the Advanced and really want to fly it, but as is, it is a lost cause and for such an iconic ship that is a crying shame.

... and it makes you buy 4 Shuttles and/or 4 B-Wings for your 4 Advanced

I have 5 B's and 3 Shuttles so I'm good :-)

Your lucky ... but I got only one Tie Advanced ... and this is Vader. Never was anything else.

I refused to buy more because at that time it was already known that the Advanced sucks monkey balls.

I hope this will change ;)

I have 3 of the little tikes :-)

For some reason I once had a crazy notion they were viable :-)

Isn't there a way to tell FFG about his?

Sadly, not that I am aware of :-(

We must convince them that the whole game sucks unless the Advanced gets his x2 upgrade.

Common Pete, we have faith in you!

+1 attack dice for 4 points! Are you kidding???? A heavy laser cannon costs 7 and it is arguably not as good as just +1 attack dice.

The Difference in price between a TIE Fighter and a TIE Interceptor is 6 points.

I also don't see why everyone things 2 attack dice is such a problem. More ships have 2 dice than have 3. And of the ships with 3 tend to be the most expensive ones.

I have yet to read a thread accusing the X-wing of being underpowered because it only has 2 agility dice.

I also don't think the TIE Advanced is broken. I don't like Marrek, But Vader is one of my favorite pilots in the game. Vader+Engine Upgrade is so awesome! Do a bank boost and then a barrel roll. I actually force myself not to take Vader so I can try different things

TIE Advanced can also be equipped with missiles, when you fly them by Captain Jonus those missiles are awesome. (try cluster missiles)

FFG doesn't accept unsolicited ideas. It's one reason why they do not have much presence on the forums.

I don't like the +1 Atk die. Let the Interceptor, and future ships, keep that role. I think something along the lines of this:

Boosted TIE Cannon

TIE Advanced x1 only

While attacking, you may change 1 [eyeball] result into a [hit] result.

Doesn't drastically alter the ships firepower, but makes it more accurate than the standard TIE.

Let's do a quick analysis of 3 attack dice ships. Most of them have a heavy down side.

Ion turret - (it's not a ship, but I thought I would put it in) yes it has all it's ionization coolness, but it never does more than 1 damage.

B-wing - Only one agility makes them die pretty fast to consistent attack. pretty expensive

YT-1300 - (named pilots only) super expensive also only one agility.

TIE Interceptor - glass cannon, only 3 attack dice ship that can be one-shot. At 18 points min, pretty expensive for an Imperial ship.

FireSpray - Quite expensive.

X-wing - I don't actually see any weakness in the X-wing. But then the game is called "X-Wing" I think it is okay that it is an awesome ship. Though some may call it expensive.

My point is not that these three attack dice ships are bad I love each and every one of them (maybe the B-wing less than others) But if you want 3 attack dice you pay for it in this game, usually with high point costs, but often also with some other deficiency in the ship.

There aren't any UBER-SHIPS in X-wing, and I think that is a good thing. As such I find the TIE Advanced to fit well within the population of the rest of the ships.

Try this list out

Captain Jonus

Tempest Squadron + Cluster Missiles x3

With 3 left over points if you want to give Jonus a proximity mine

Turn 1 Target Lock (if you can) with TIE Advanced

Turn 2 Focus, Fire cluster missiles, each making 2 attacks 3 dice each with 2 re-rolls and a focus thrown in for good measure.

After that you still have some nasty dog fighters to kill anything that is left.

Yet again these folks who just read the first and the last post ...

We are way over the +1 attack.

The proposal is to allow the use of the System Upgrade folks...
