Why aren't Y-Wings bombers?

By Falchion3, in X-Wing

Yeah, it's a bomber. the easiest evidence in this regard is the fact that they were the Alliance's first choice to take out the Death Star, which is why they went first. They have a high capacity for torpedoes and heavy armor, and they approach at slow speed in order to better hit their usually-stationary targets. Their torpedo racks were exchangeable with missile and bomb racks, so they could be adjusted for their roles.

As far as the game goes however, they fulfill the bomber role just fine. Torpedoes work best on what, exactly? Right: targets with low agility, or no agility. They also have the heavy armor necessary to survive long enough to deliver their payload, and slow enough that they can deliver their torpedoes without overshooting their target.

Seems like a good fit for the bomber role in this game.

Now we just have to figure out how to get a *turret* onto an imperial ship that isn't so popular......Tie Advanced? jk jk

Well, if the Empire gets access to the turret, let the Y-Wings have a bomb dropper.

This would be the Tie Aggressor then ... basically a Tie Advanced with a turret, yes ... even if the Tie Aggressors role is stated as a 'light bomber'

If both factions get bombs then it may blur the lines between them and tie swarms would disappear if seismic went rebel. If rebels get bombs i like the idea of the proximity being the big one. Maybe they get a cheaper prox mine or something. But the idea why rebels probably won't get one is the same reason some people don't want them to have headhunters. It will blur the factions to much.

You are right basilisk. The days of the tie swarm would be over if two y-wings were on the table with seismic charges at a whopping 40 points total. That's enough to still have a wedge/Biggs come with points left over. Maybe a bomb slot isn't a good idea...

For those of you worried that adding a bomb slot to rebel would make the TIE swarm disappear, I should point out that in tournaments you will be flying Imperial vs Imperial a whole lot. TIE Bombers + Bombs hasn't made TIE Swarms disappear entirely, so there's no reason Y-Wings + Bombs would do the same. Bombs aren't going to eliminate the swarm as a viable tactic and there are ways to pilot a swarm to minimize bombs.
