Screw Scubadude, I'll tell you about it NOW!!!!!

Round 5 - Philly Cheese w/ Hugo vs Edwin Doo-man w/ Frogase

Mt_do takes game 1 after playing for 25 minutes. Philly Cheese takes game 2 in like... 10 minutes. When they call time on game 3, Mt_do tries to finish Philly off, but isn't successful. They WOULD draw.

They face a draw, that puts them at 8 points each and neither of them will make top 8. If one wins, that one will advance to top 8. Since the Hanover Crew and the Maryland Crew are UFS buds, neither of our groups wanted neither of them to miss out on top 8, giving their slot to somebody who is possibly not from our group. We like Philly Cheese and Mt_Do equally, so we came to the decision that they rock/paper/scissors for the top 8 slot.

Round 1 - Mt_do beats Philly - scissors over paper
Round 2 - Philly beats Mt_do - paper over rock
Round 3 - Philly beats Mt_do - rock over scissors

EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (don't ask me how I remember those exact rounds of rock/paper/scissors)

I thought it was something like that lol hopefully you will next time MT dooooo.

OMG EPIC! also shaneth sorry about missing your call last night. sleep was needed. 2 days at a con with atl ='s NO SLEEP.

Now I know why Bob was so upset afterwards. The draw would have put Bob in the top 8 as the next 3 people after the top 8 were Bob, TaintedDoughnut(woulda been knocked out due to diversity), and then me all with 9 points. All from Maryland... I can see why Bob feels he kinda got screwed out of a top 8 place, and honestly can't say I blame him.

While it may have supposedly been done to make sure somebody from the two play groups made it, it deliberately ****** one of our players out of the top 8. So while some of you think it is awesome...others don't think so...

Not that we didn't have a awesome time there (and thank you craig for having us down!), just some things end up leaving sour tastes in your mouth afterwards.

A very similar situation myself and the Foxhound member playing 8hs Gill found ourselves in at the Southern Ontario Regionals this weekend.

We were both at 7 points (2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie) and the winner would have had 10 points and top 8 spot locked. But becuase we ended up with a draw... one more of the people with 9 points got in. There were actually 3 peeps with 9 points after 5 rounds, 2 of which got in and 1 with 9 points didn't get in and on tiebreakers (one of his losses was to another one of the 9 point players), we would have made it so only one 9 pointer got in but the draw sunk us both leaving us with 8.

Just a similar example with a different outcome - draw. One of the more contraversial parts of the game I know, but I can completely understand both points of view. Sometimes it's important to be happy with a draw. The way I see it, if you don't win outright you can't complain that you should land top 8 and in more cases than not I would hope people take a draw when it is a draw.

It was a little rough hearing that a forced Rock paper scissors kept anyone from our playgroup from going top eight for the first time.

But next one in this area is ours so certainly going to be looking to step the game up a notch and get there...I propose new MD tie breaker be bare knuckle boxing

win more and you won't get diversified/not make top 8 like happened to me. it sucks but it's reality, go to the dojo and get your weight up!

players can report however they like if they agree to it as long as there is no bribing and other shady crap. can you blame them for not wanting to not make top 8? if you were in there spot would you of said, oh well let's draw didn't want to make top 8 anyway? just gotta think about it from their side too.

TRAIN MORE!!

TRAIN MORE!!

Draw when time ended and reporting it otherwise because of something that happened after time is not shady? Meh. Depends on how you look at it I suppose. Not saying it was shady, am saying it was a phenomenally sh*tty thing to do, especialy when people who actually earned their wins were looking to get into top 8. Sure you can say "TRAIN MORE!!" all you want, doesn't change the bitter taste in ones mouth.

As mentioned in my first response, I can whole-heartedly see both sides to it. But there is, and should always, be a difference between 'wanting' to make top 8 and 'deserving' to make top 8.

Train more can be said to the two that drew, as well as the individual that was ousted by one of them getting a win. If the matches were held in isolation of information, it would be natural to assume a draw would have been the conclusion.

You are right that, at current - players can report however they wish, and there is no way to remove the transparency of the scoring system becuase it pairs that way...

Perhaps the system should be revamped to include giving judges the power to oversee, identify, and penalize erred reporting. After all, the only thing that can possibly come from manipulating results is mixed player reactions and barriers between play groups, something that I'm sure we can all agree to is unwanted.

Very controversial topic, but, before the game evolves to the point where there is a large player base and therefore some natural anonymity built into the scoring system, it may be smart to review the things that 'leave sour tastes in mouths' and potentially create barriers to the game and player base growing like we all want it to.

Yeah I just talked to Bob about it.

I didn't figure that 9 points would make the cut unless Jeff Downs won and decided to drop because he knew he couldn't beat me in diversity. With that knowledge and an exact 32 people to start, divide that by 4, tack on win and draw points, and you figure that 10 points is the cut-off. It made clear sense that everybody in the top tables had a chance at top 8ing while the top players of the next row of tables would not make it in unless somebody was actually dumb enough to accept a draw (eliminating BOTH their presences in top 8) or people being cut for diversity. Chris Cruise was the only person who was eligible for being cut for diversity, but 9 points didn't place him in top 8.

I understand Bob and Norbs views on this. I sympathize with it as I know what it's like, but you absolutly have to expect this kind of stuff to happen when you travel to main events. If people want to make top 8 then they will do anything possible to do it, even if it means risking rock/paper/scissors with a friend.

This stuff happens all the time. One example that day: In top 4, if Chubbs didn't beat me, I would still report it as Chubbs winning our match. Reason being because I knew I had a slim chance of beating MickyD's Hanzo, but Chubbs had it higher. I'm not saying I like Chubbs better than MickyD; I am saying that I want him to have a better chance at winning the tournament more than I would. Does this mean I am shady? Does this mean I have no confidence? It means that I want to give a teammate a better chance than me; aka Playing As A Team. Players can and will report rounds as they wish, and there's not much you can do about it.

This stuff may not happen at local and casual tournaments but it will happen in the big leagues. The Maryland Crew has evolved so much from when we first met you, and I believe it is your first time experiencing top 8 drama. It does indeed leave sour tastes, but it's something that you have to deal with and prepare for next time. Take this experience (no matter how sour it may be), learn from it, and do better next time. That's the competitive spirit of the game.

And I know you guys won't be shafted at your own regional at RenGames. You're all high-class players and Hanover thinks very highly of you. I expect that you will gain experience from this past weekend and develop a prominent tournament mindset that will take you guys to the top.

The rock/paper/scissors was not forced at all. It was suggested and both players agreed on it.

I'm not gonna lie I don't think any of us were overly happy with the Roc paper scissors outcome since we all played some vicious games and would have been happy to win our way into top eight. But as I said to Mt_Do at least the game is still relaxed enough that those things can happen.

So do I feel maybe a touch of sour in the mouth as Prophet said yeah a bit. But happy that at the same time the game is at least relaxed enough that things like that can happen even if I would have liked it if not me someone of my playgroup to go top eight be the first MD boy to make it. But whats done is done and I'll be damned if at least one if not all of us are gonna top eight come may. Better believe were steping it up a notch.

Thing is tho, you guys are saying it was total BS, but we think you guys would have probably done the same thing in the situation Philly and Mt_Do were in. Desperation kicks in when top 8 is only one step away. The drive to be in top 8 can be dramatic a LOT of times.
Just ask Jeremy Ray and his CanNats 08 drama.

It is time to drop the topic I think. What is done is done. It was not my intention to make anyone feel sour. Shanenth, at the same time, I don't think it is BP's or tainted's intention to seem ticked although the f-bomb does make it seem the other way around. When the next regionals hit, the Marylander's will more than likely pulll off some top 8's since it is our home territory. WE BETTER. But the next questions that comes to my mind is, what will happen when tie breakers are needed? will they truly be allowed? What if a draw occurs again? Will the people who fall short of top 8 by a point have to do a tie breaker amongst themselves instead of the two who made a tie? The world may never know.
