The Krayt Fang - A Millennium Falcon Repaint

By Agatheron, in X-Wing

For those of you who have played the Beginner Game for the Star Wars Edge of the Empire Roleplaying game, you'll recognize the Krayt Fang as a YT-1300 that the players get to steal as the goal of the adventure. I decided to paint one of my own YT's to that colour scheme, taking some of my own liberties with it.

The ship, as presented in the game, looks to be all a dirty rust brown. I decided that I would take liberties with that scheme and leave the "unseen" parts from the ship deck plan as being more a standard dirty white hull.

It's reasonably close to being done, but I'll show how I got there.

I did a little bit of paint removal using some lacquer thinner and a Q-Tip to thin out some of the areas where the factor wash was too think. I also filled in a couple of the access panels and rescribed some panel lines, as well as filling in the Falcon's own damaged areas and creating my own. Otherwise I simply used a Tamiya Fine White Primer over the model. Once that dried, I preshaded it black usng my airbrush:

After that, I then airbrushed GW's Ulthuan Grey as the base coat, I then sponged on some White Scar to simulate chipping and wear.

My goal is to get a red-brown. I used airbrushed GW's Deathclaw Brown first, followed by doing a mottling effect with Skrag Brown. It came out much more orange than I expected, but my later plans for the model will cut this back a bit. For the light chipping I lightly sponged on a mix of Deathclaw Brown and White Scar.

Next, I painted in some details with a brush, and added a decal created from a surplus decal I had kicking around. I painted some panels with Mourngfang Brown and Administratium Grey. I then sponged on some Ulthuan Grey very lightly in places to show some wear and tear in the paint, and on the decal.

I realized I also needed to add some details around the engines with Celestra and Ulthuan Grey. Most recently, I sprayed the model down with Tamiya Clear, and then did an oil-based "pin-wash" using MIG Productions "Neutral Wash" on the light grey/white areas, Brown Wash on the orange/brown areas, and Dark Wash in the various mechanical access panels. This is where the model stands now:

I need to clear coat this with Dullcote again, to do a filter to bring the colours together a bit, then go back to a gloss coat to handle some grease and rust streaking, then dullcote, then some airbrush and pigment work to bring out some damaged and small scorch marks.

So far I'm having fun. Lots of detail on this, which is very much comparable to Finemold's 1/144 Scale Millennium Falcon which I built a few years ago.

--I should add that these pictures aren't the greatest. Once it is all done, I'll use something other than my iPhone.

That's looking great already, can't wait to see it finished.

The impression I got from the game is that the Krayt Fang isn't a well-kept ship, the (former) Trandoshan owner wasn't exactly neat. I'm hoping the next stages of it reflects that.

Really like the way you treated your orange, good looking ship.

It had to be new at some point. :)

I actually had this idea too... I thought of getting a second 'falcon' and doing something similar for our group. I'm GM'ing over roll20.net - well, I'll be GM'ing as soon as we get the rest of the characters finished. LOL

What are you using for masking? What material? Noob here.

Thanks for the feedback.

The masking material is a vinyl masking tape made by 3M used for doing work on cars. I got mine at NAPA auto-parts. It allows for very fine edges, I like it better than Tamiya's masking tape, personally, as there's some bend and flex to it. I use two different widths, 1/4" and 1/8". When doing larger projects, I combine it with a wider low-tack blue painter's tape to cover the bulk of a model, but use the vinyl stuff for smaller. Because this one is a smaller model, it was all the vinyl tape.

I've not done any more work on it since the last picture, but hopefully I can get some more work done on it soon. The filter layer will be very subtle, and may not be worth a separate picture, but I'll see once it's done.

Looks really great, I want to see it finished...

Specially because looks like tha boss behind the YT wants a ride on it...

So now I know, you are the same Agatheron from The Waaagh. :D

I am indeed. :) techniques are transferable, so are names. :)

This looks awesome, I actually have the starter with the map for this ship.. I totally did not think to paint it though.. lol.. today I di do a repaint on one of my MFs, just for fun.. I think it came out alright.

This does look really good though. Just thought I'd add my appreciation for good art, and good paint.

...and done! I debated showing the different steps, but I got into a groove. First the picture:

The rust/grime streaks were done using various colours of oils over a gloss clear coat. I applied small dots of oil paint, let it dry for a bit, then using a small brush drew it out into streaks. I then let it dry for a bit longer (oils have LONG drying times), and then softened them with a larger brush that was dry. After I was satisfied with how the streaks looked, I then sprayed it with Dullcote, and then airbrushed black around the damaged areas that I had created, plus doing the staining on the rear vents. Lastly, I airbrushed the rear engine with increasingly lighter shades of blue.

Right... here is the rear engine shot. The lighting isn't that great on it:

As I said before, once I get my photobooth done up, I can take pictures on a background, and even perhaps put it into an action shot in space. :)

So very well done! Bravo! I haven't painted anything since I stopped building model cars, but this - THIS - is making me want to start again... Painting my X-Wing stuff, not model cars. :-)

I love the way you cut the dish down too... What would you charge to do one of these? I know my own painting would mean more, but until I did...

Do you build model cars? Happy to do some trading...

Nice dirty bird.

This is amazing work. Glad you shared.

Looks great :)

dang it, I thought I was the only person in the world to think of trimming the dish down.

Purty!

Sweet ride! You should apply for a job at Corellian Engineering.
