Obstacle question

By Klasmars, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If a pilot lands on a astroid the following happens: Do not preform action, roll one attack die and cant shot in that turn.

BUT can he use his pilot ability and/or upgrade cards such as: Draw Their Fire, When a friendly ship at range 1 is hit by an attack, you may suffer 1 of the uncancelled critical_icon.png results instead of the target ship

and Jan Ors : When another friendly ship at Range 1-3 is attacking, if you have no stress tokens, you may receive 1 stress token to allow that ship to roll 1 additional attack die?

Was this a question...?

No, you cannot use these abilities. The damage suffered from the asteroid is not an attack. Draw Their Fire specifies that it can only be used when a friendly is hit by an attack.

And while it would be awesome to use Jan to force the player to roll TWO asteroid dice, it's not an attack so the conditions for her ability don't exist.

Or was he asking if the ship ON the rock could still use those abilities to help its own squad, since they are not actions?

Yes Crookedwookie. Thats the question

Gotcha. It was phrased and formatted a bit confusingly.

I don't see why not. I parsed the rules quickly, and the only things it specifies are "skip the Perform Action step," which this would not interfere with, and that you cannot make an attack of you are parked on said rock. I don't see either of the listed conditions negating your ability to use those kinds of non-action abilities, unless someone finds an FAQ point or something that I missed.

CW has it right.

The list of things that happens when you land on a rock is finite, and doesn't do anything to affect the use of abilities.

Ah, my mistake. Sorry, I misunderstood the question. :)

The thing with obvious things is that they are only obvious to the person who thinks of them... My bad and also. Thanks guys. This is one of those things that needs a FAQ perhaps?

I mean an FAQ update certainly wouldn't hurt anything, unless they managed to find a way to raise unasked questions with it. But I'm not sure it's crying out for one, either. I can see where the point of confusion came from but it's one where the rules lay out fairly clearly the only 2 effects that happen when colliding with an obstacle so I don't think it's been particularly widespread confusion on this one.

If a pilot lands on a astroid the following happens: Do not preform action, roll one attack die and cant shot in that turn .

One other point here, the bolded portion above is not quite correct.

A ship cannot attack while it is on an obstacle, but it does not lose its attack just for landing on it. It's a subtle difference, but does open up possibilities - if you can somehow get off the obstacle before your attack, usually via some action-passing such as Squad Leader or Lando, then you can still make your attack.

On the need for FAQ'ing it... I can see where the confusion could come from, but it is easily explained and the rules really aren't unclear. I also think that this is the first time I've seen this question in almost a year, so not sure it qualifies as "F" ;)

Just an AQ, you say? :D

unless they managed to find a way to raise unasked questions with it.

Yes because something like that never happens. :)
