I will still go see the new SW and ST films but I would have rather seen Joss Whedon involved in this rather than JJ Abrams. Having Lucas out of the SW business is a move in the right step anyway IMHO.
JJ Abrams, may actually be full of win
Notice how the wings are deployed rather than folded? First clue that it's not either of the original set pieces.
I'm pretty sure this is the large 3/4 scale X-wing they made for one of the Star Wars Celebrations recently:

No set piece made in the 80's would last this long, if they spared it from the scrap bin.
And really, why would they? It costs a crap ton of money to store large set pieces in Hollywood. The ones that do survive usually are treated very badly because only us fans care enough to preserve such things. Case in point: the original Shuttlecraft from Star Trek. It was in horrible shape after only 30 years in storage in some Hollywood backlot, then some fans tried to restore it and found that the work was way more than they prepared for. Mind you, this is a set piece which was designed to last years. The X-wings and Millennium Falcon were likely not as well-built, though I think they did have to have some structure in order to withstand being moved around. Still, it wouldn't be as much as the Shuttlecraft, because they would only be needed for a few weeks, a month tops, before they would be discarded or recycled.
I really wish I could find it, but I know I've seen a picture once of the Millennium Falcon's mandible rotting in a junkyard.

Sorry to crush your hopes, but it's not real. It's just a bit of photoshop work, there is an entire series by the same guy that did this one.
i figured which is why i asked for the link. Being outside just made no sense to me and in the middle of urban development? Anyways it would be cool but it is not shocking at all hence why the dibs joke. It also doesnt make sense when this could be done for 10% of the cost on computer. Still would like that link to the picture though.
This is why I love J.J. Abrams, no matter what anyone thinks. He believes in authentic sets, not green screens.
When I watched how much work was put into Trek '09's sets I was like. "Holy S**T."
Disney messed this up by not giving it to Whedon.
JJ is rebooting Star Trek well enough but he has to continue Star Wars.
Any attempt at a reboot will be met with serious hostility especially as there is such a wealth of EU material there.
Maybe the full scale Serenity put them of Joss. If he got to build the Falcon too it would only be a matter of time before he was sitting in his bath robe, hood up, cackling to himself in the command chair of a full size death star.
Was there not a Kickstarter earlier this year to build a full scale Falcon? I remember that there was an April Fool's prank KS for the Death Star.

Eruletho posted the link earlier in the thread. Here it is again.
