So I tried to make a few 3d asteroids. For my first attempt, I used dropzone flight bases and pink foam.

First I outlined the foam with asteroid shapes from the official templates. Then I cut out the asteroids and gave them a little shaping and texture. Then I sprayed them with black spraypaint which ate into the foam and gave even more texture. Following that was a few layers of brushed and drybrushed blacks and grays.

First off, those look good. When dealing with 3d asteroids/collisions does one just move them out of the way? What if one were to make them high enough that even the tallest ship could fit beneath it without moving said asteroid. might possibly give the game some of the vertical element it appears to be missing? no?

I put the stands on top of the cardboard asteroids, if a ship needs to move through or on, I just pick up the asteroid!

Very similar to how mine work, with mine the stems are loose enough in the socket you can just remove the asteroid and leave the base for measurements..

I just painted lava rocks and stuck them on bases. Painted in grays, reds, blues.

They turned out well. You can see the glue points that did not get effected by the spray, that gives the rocks a ridged look that makes them stand out very nicely!

I really should do 1 more.. I'm a single asteroid short of 2 sets.

I need to try my had at this. everyones look amazing and I am sure I have some lava rock laying around. maybe I can pick up a capital ship model and turn it into some space clutter.

Took them to our fly casual night along with my frozen planet mat for a nice Hoth asteroid game.

Nice looking game...even that out of scale Hounds Tooth looks good on the board.
