What on earth is a Mad Glare?

By Crystal Geyser, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

In the Allies and Adversaries section of the Dark Heresy Core Rulebook, the Warp Witch is listed as having a number of items as gear, including bits of strangeness, tattered robes...and a "mad glare".

What on earth is a mad glare, in that context? It can't be a literal facial expression, as that's not something you would carry around, and that's not something that can be taken from a dead body. Unless you have a very sharp knife.

So given the context, what is a mad glare?

It's a manner of speech, and it does indeed mean a facial expression. Though I suppose it can be looted if your PCs are handy at skinning people.

They really had to list that as a whole item of wargear?

Really?

Its like in a few Call of Cthulhu adventures, a NPC would have "Laugh Maniacally" 70% or "Rub hands Fiendishly" 55%. Humour! In a RPG are they insane?!!!!

They're being funny.

As explained it's an English idiom that any native speaker would recognize (and hopefully chuckle at).

Pops up all over GWs works too, it`s a very british thing.

The most common use of it is "armed only with claws, teeth and a bad attitude."

My favorite is the form the WFRP book about Bretonia and a Knight Errrants equipment: He had boundless confidence.

The Assassin in my group is a -little- unhinged and removes the faces of particularly worthy adversaries. He is also a loot-hound of the most dedicated sort. In his case, the "mad glare" is certainly a lootable piece of gear :D

Something related to the Mad Hatter perhaps?

The Dark Heresy core rulebook and the Inquisitor's Handbook were initially made by Black Industries of Games Workshop, who decided to pull the plug right after selling out of product immediately. Thankfully FFG picked up the line and added new ones. So there is some slight dissonance at times between the two teams. I think this is one of them.

Small But Vicious Dog! Best item of equipment...

As Askil says this is very much in the mould of what GW has always done (What are Zoats' favourite food anyone?). Warhammer and 40k is loaded with silly humour (and random historical references which most people would never get) and always has been, alongside the ridiculous bleakness of the settings. It may be a British thing. I have to say I barely even noticed these things (at least as being unusual. I either glossed over them entirely, or had a little chuckle at the better ones). It was obvious to me as a humourous reference... but then I am British so if it is a cultural thing that makes sense.

Zoatibix, of course.

I dunno, as you say, I guess it's a British thing. I always quite like the occasional silly humour. The fact that when placing the Decapitator (a Dark Eldar assassin) from reserve, strictly speaking the rules actually require you to laugh manaically is one of my favourites.
