Aim Maneuver

By JPierson, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, I'm sure this question has been asked before but I did a search and couldn't find anything. When you do the aim maneuver, the last line in the description says "Any damage that exceeds the character's soak also negates the benefit of aiming". Umm, I don't get it. Does that mean that if your character has taken ANY damage he cannot aim now?

I'm sure its going to be something obvious but at this point, I just don't get it, lol. Thanks in advance for any help!

If you execute aim this turn planning to gain the aim bonus next turn, and you take damage that exceeds your soak between this turn and the next your aim is canceled.

Most times the Aim maneuver is used in the same round as the attack so it's generally not an issue. However if a PC/NPC moves or does another maneuver then Aims or double Aims (not Attacking that round) and they take damage in excess of their Soak before they get to Attack they loose their Aim(s).

The rule is there to represent how, if you are trying to line up a shot, getting hit and injured will throw off your aim.

Does the "damage throws off your aim" bit mean wound damage or strain, too?

i.e. Can you Aim, spend two strain for a second Aim, then attack?

i think RAI is that it's the unexpected hit from an adversary that throws off your aim. so if someone attacks you while you're aiming, the aim is nullified. however, if you're straining yourself to make sure your aim is good, then your aim still works.

Not Strain you take yourself to get a second manoeuvre or Strain taken from a Threat or applied with Advantage, however Stun Damage that causes Strain would.

Finally, a game that supports my long-held desire to play a narcoleptic sniper.

Taking Strain to use a second maneuver [Aimx2] wouldn't exceed your Soak value. It would ignore it.

Okay, how about "Finally, a game that supports my long-held desire to play a narcoleptic naked Bothan sniper."

I have always wondered about this in the SW universe. Wookies and Selonians just seem to get a free pass to walk around naked as they please. Furry nuts just swinging about in the breeze, not a care in the 'verse. But for some reason Bothans have to put pants on to enjoy the galaxy?

Seems unfair. So I'm supporting you. Go ahead and play the game YOU want to play. Make your dreams a reality, Mr. Orange.

"Breeze feels good on my boys."

Huh. I always just assumed that Wookies had cloacas or something...

I think it has less to do with the galaxy at large and more each species' cultural taboo. Bothans like their secrets, and wookies are one with nature. Gand wear clothes, geonosians don't really and verpine are 50/50 from what i've seen. Three different insect species, all varying in degrees of dress.

It also really helps to consider that "damage" is not the same thing as "wounds" or "strain." If an effect caused you to "suffer 1 Wound" or "Suffer 1 strain," that's not damage. Damage is damage, and usually results in either Wounds or Strain if the damage exceeds Soak.

But if you were simply made to suffer 1 Wound or Strain (with no damage being dealt first, and soak etc. coming into the equation), that is not damage that exceeds your Soak value. It's just a Wound or Strain. Continue your aim.

In short: Wounds and Strain are not necessarily "damage."

But if you were simply made to suffer [...]

It's our lot in life.
