BOSS' BLAZERS: YAMATO 2199 Gaming with X-WING!

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

I just thought id share this with you Joe Boss. You might appreciate it. One of the reasons it was so annoying when our Yamato inspired game ended was because i didnt get to complete the saga and end up as captain of this.

I was very pleased with the now completely useless design *L*

I love the original ships. I was thinking that you could make other ships too based on the classic Wave Engine designs of 2120 to 2122.

After that period the ships get to science fictiony IMO. I am working on gaming 2196 to 2202'ish.

After Final Yamato i stopped watching until the new series. The live action one had its moments but it felt like an American remake of Yamato rather than a Japanese one. and i hated what they did with the Gamilas. Though i would love to get some good looks at the cg models of the Okita Kan and Yukikaze from the live action one. Different as they were they still looked good

Yeah man, there is like 15 minutes of good footage in the live action 2010 Yamato. They screwed it up bad, half the fun was that evil-ass Desslok blue skinned guy, and his generals trying EVERYTHING to kill "That Earth Ship!"

Series one, two, and some of three...that is what I am working with for my STAR BLAZERS Project.

The good stuff!

:D

That is what im taking about. Pre and just post wave motion engines. Not a huge fan of White Comet ships but Dark Nebula ships are pretty darned groovy. As Roland Emmerich will im sure agree *L* ( if he is honest he will acknowledge Yamato in general considering how much he ripped it off in Independence Day). And oh the beauty of the EDF. They are just lovely designs

I didnt really like the Denguil ships from Final all that much though to be honest

Give me a full collection of The UNCO-EDF & Gamalon-Garmillas Fleets from The 2196 to 2202 Era...and the rest are cool extras.

That is a fun seven years or so to play in.

The NEW Lambea comes! She brings death and destruction in her wake as she confronts our heroes!...can The Star Force defeat this great foe? Ha, Ha!

The Balgray Is Coming! This is the workhorse of The Garmillas Fleet, and my favorite of the class.

Playing with those would be brilliant. But on a more affordable note, bandai is coming out with the mini kits of the ships from Yamato 2199

I had considered that a good bit, but I love the little Fighters and Bombers zooming among the big ships.

For me 1/1000 scale YAMATO is the opposite side of the X-WING coin. In X-WING we have a lot of Fighters and a few Capitol ships. So I get the best of both worlds when I play these universes to their strengths, as presented in the films and shows.

:D

The Garmillas Warships Set Four is coming! This is an awesome addition to any Imperial Fleet!

It is cool my freind.

I have been writing and hunting up good art for months so that I can duplicate the cards and make X-Wing into Astro-Fleet-Wing!

I even have a cool place to get the new cards done up as real cards with art on the front and back.

It is a lot to do but it is fun.

Using some of the Mecha Collection Yukikaze destroyers as Imperial fast attack ships in Xwing, myself. Gleefully planning at least one fleet for each side so I can have fleet battles of my own.

Quick non-gaming query: I've been thinking about getting the Star Blazers 2199 DVD's... Any suggestion on where to get them? Also, is it official that they're doing the Comet Empire?

I have the impression they will do Comet Empire... but as of now I can not say for sure. I will be surprised if they do not make it given how great the new series was and how well it was received.

You might want to wait to get the DVD's because they are doing an English dubbed version, or so they have said. There is no exact date for that, but they are working on it. I have seen early next year suggested on several blogs and other site. The starblazers.com site had a video talking about it too, a few months back, so it is likely coming in the next six months.

:)

The Comet Empire is definitely either going to be a new series or a stand alone movie. They have released a teaset trailer for it but the terminology is a bit vague

And i have this book and its EDF counterpart which is incredibly useful

Then there is this forgotten film that is as blatant a Yamato rip off as possible

If only I could read Japanese... :(

Wait... does this come in English?

Also, LOVE the Yamato inspired ships on your Shapeways shop Gosric {...and your Star Wars... and your Star Trek... and your Flash Gordon... and... you're a very BAD MAN...}

Thank you. I try to be *L*

At the moment the dvds are available region free on Amazon but i cannot vouch for the subs. But it is going to be released soon (actually might be already) as Starblazers 2199 with sub or dub options. and half the price. As for the books they havent reprinted them in english but they might if the demand hits. I dont read Japanese either but i can puzzle enough out for reference purposes.
A while ago Gundam had a brief surge in popularity here and all sorts of stuff was available. Im hoping for the same with Yamato

Out of curiousity, what scale are your SB2199 designs, Gosric? Judging by the dimensions, the fighters seem to be compatable with Xwing. Are the big ships in 1/1000 to go along with the Bandai models?

The fighters, the newest ones anyway are compatible with X Wing. The larger ships were specifically designed for a game we created some time go which were the capital ships were roughly 1/1450 scale. When we designed the game and ships the models for 2199 were not available so we were winging it. I have been toying with the idea of rescaling them but am not sure if it would be worth the trouble. it is a bit of a niche market. My Admiral Raeder class cruiser for instance is 4.04 inches long and to be 1/1000 it would be almost exactly 6 inches (5.98 and change). And other than Yamato gaming there isnt much demand for large space going battleships.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. I've been toying with the idea of using the larger scale Bandai fighter in a scaled up dogfighting game & combining Xwing rules with an old fleet action game from the 80's (early 90's?) called Harpoon.

The Xwing rules should scale up nicely (What scale are these things 1/72? 1/144?) Anyway...

Harpoon should give a decent platform to base the rules on for large ships, gun turrets, missles, torpedoes, squadron level fighters... I just have to work in an easier maneuver system which is where the Xwing rules come in (although the thought of the Yamato doing a 4 K-turn seems a bit much)

X Wing fighters? 1/270. The large ships vary

Sorry, I was referring to the bandai fighter kits. I think that they are 1/72 for the most part.
