The Empire Strikes Back

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

Citizens of the Empire!

Right in this moment, the Rebellion, the cancer of the galaxy, is building even larger ships then the Firespray and the Lambda Class Shuttle! Those filthy but ruthless rebels are ready to launch Transports and Corvettes in a pretty well guessed scale of 1:500 against the Empire!

Of course our TIE Bombers are ready to face the thread and will utterly destroy whatever the hideous rebels will launch to harm the order and the peace.

But there will be a time to strike back !

Now I ask you. Which one (or two) of the Empires' big vessels you know of will fit on the playfield, assuming a scale of 1:500 for the epic mode?

I still recon it's 1/400.. but anyway I would love one of the Imperial Gozanti Cruisers in the new Rebels cartoon series.

Sweet!

"This is the transport Alexandria. We appreciate your help Red Squadron: we're preparing engine coordinates for hyperspace."

"Roger Alexandria! ...Hold on, a ship has come out of hyperspace."

"What the?! An Imperial Escort Carrier!! Red Squadron, help!"

"We're coming!"

"Agh! Those cannons are tearing us apart! Get them away-" *radio static*

"...Red Squadron, we've lost the transport. Let's make those Imperials pay."

can't really remember many notable ships in the order of 150-180m length used on the imperial side, at least from the movies, there it was mostly fighter level or ISD.

When I look up some ships where I haven't had any visuals before, most of them are either disturbingly nondescript or outright ugly. ;)

On this level I probably would prefer another bigger transport or so, not that they are imperial only.

On that note, it would be probably easier to issue a set of pilot/crew cards for the corvette since it isn't exlusivly used by the rebellion anyhow.

a pity that some of the nicer frigates, nebulon etc, are bit large for that scale.

Yes. The Rendili StarDrive light corvette or customs corvette.

180m in lenght - in 1:500 = 36cm ... this might be the largest possible ship for X-Wing.

Rodent still thinks the epic scale is 1:400 ... it would be 45cm then ... a 45cm ship is almost too much for x-wing ...

How long is your fantastic (!) Customs Corvette?

The Imperial Gozanti Cruiser (41,8m) might be too small for the epic scale (8,3cm at 1:500) ... and perhaps too big for 1:270 (15,5cm)

I think there might not be a fixed 'Epic Scale'. I've played a few games like Epic: Armageddon that use a sliding scale. So the bigger the item gets the higher the ratio. So it could very well be that the Transport is 1:400, the Tantive closer to 1:460 and something like a Nebulon-B would be as much as 1:540.

Edited by Rodent Mastermind

Do you think there will be a Nebulon-B sometime? with 300m this would be a massive ship on the table (1:540 = 55,6cm)

Anyone able to identify the 2. rebel transport on this chart?

I wonder why FFG still keep the length of the big ships in secret ... btw

We have been playing 300pts on a 4x6 and it feels about right. So I would assume that EPIC scale would not be 3'x3'. 50cm on a 4'x6' is just about feasible,

Are there any 300m-ish EU ships for the Empire?

EDIT:

... I found one ... 255m in length ...

640px-Vigil-class_corvette_%28Fractalspo

Vigil -class corvette

47cm in 1:540

51cm in 1:500

Edited by TheRealStarkiller

Yeah the Vigil is awesome, that length is a bit up for debate too.. it might well be a bit shorter than quoted on Wookiepedia, it's I believe a guess from a blurry picture with nothing in shot to compare against. As far as I know there is no cannon source for it's length.

Personally, i'd like to see the nebulon-b as the heavy hitter for the rebels with the cr-90 taking on the role of a cruiser class vessel in the game's existing size & encounter scale (fighters, transports & small capital ships resulting in roving fleet & flight skirmishes as opposed to line fleet battles).

For the empire, i'd like to see 2 vessels from the eu make their appearance:

The Vigil-class corvette

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Vigil-class_corvette

& the imperial 2 class frigate taking on the roll of the imp heavy hitter

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_II-class_frigate

I think the Imperial class 2 Frigate may be far too long. The Vigil is about the length of the Nebulon-B. The Imperial 2 Class would be around 74cm at 1:540 which I think is far too long to be playable.

Not definitively - but the one on the right looks like the one from the upcoming release (the one that supposedly has Porkins too).

The one on the left looks like Jabba's Sail Barge. :-)

aye, the imp class 2 size issue is something i'd been considering as well as 2 other visual caveats that could come into play: 1. the 'sliding scale' for the huge ships & how that would factor into the design of ships larger than the nebulon b for epic play & 2. from an ascetic perspective, a sense that the imp cap ships should be larger than their reb counterparts to continue to convey the oppressive, mass production feel (also, the imp class 2 would give those wanting an ISD a viable candidate while still being small enough to not have too horrendous of a scale crunch to be playable on the board)

The silhouette looks like a Action VI and a GR-75.. but the Action VI looks a bit short.

According to Rodents Theory about non-linear epic scales FFG might apply ... lets say 1:700 for the Imperial class 2 Frigate.

This would be about 57cm then ...

It depends on what size they go for on other things.. I wouldn't want to make such a large scale jump between the Nebulon-B and the Class 2 Frigate. however if the Nebulon-B was at 1:600 then it might be possible.

Indeed it looks like an Action VI bulk transport

But that should be 100m, whereas the GR-75 is 90m and the GR-45 is even shorter.

The real question is would a Class 2 add anything you couldn't get from the Vigil. Which is fairly heavily armed and a more reasonable size.. The other thing is hanger bays. Which will definitely look really out of scale at 1/700

I hate the sliding scale. My X-Wings don't get smaller when they go up against larger ships, do they. I really hope FFG doesn't continue down this path. If a ship should be three feet long at the current capital ship scale, make it three feet long or don't make it.
