This might have been asked - I'm new to the forums...
The tourney rules say that you MUST use only components from the official game. Are people buying 3rd party "laser cut" stuff for casual play only? Or are they allowed in tourney play?
I ask for a couple of reasons...
1) I'm working on getting something "official" going at our FLGS.
b) I'm intending to go to GenCon next year and am curious how this is covered.

I know for a fact that the templates are not allowed in tourney's, but I'm not sure about the focus/TL/etc since they wouldnt effect the game in the slightest.
The tourney rules actually explicitly allow third-party movement templates, as long as the players agree on them and/or share the same set. Third-party tokens are prohibited by the strict letter of the rules, but I have a hard time seeing anyone objecting to your Litko shield or focus tokens as long as it's clear what they are.

In a locally organized tourney, I understand that. What about when I go to GenCon next year? I was under the impression that those games were "sanctioned" and run by FFG...
You may have been looking at an older version of the tournament rules. The first one to pop up on google for me was the 2012 version which did not allow third party range rulers or movement templates. More recent versions of those rules explicitly allow third-party range rulers and movement templates with some caveats. Check out the 'Component Modifications' rules that start at the end of page 1 and continue to page 2 (at least in version 1.4 of the document, dated to 10/10/2013):

My recommendation is, if you decide to bring third party tokens for anything, make sure that you also bring official tokens. That way, if there is any problem, you can switch to the official tokens.

Yeah I played at Worlds this year and I would say 2/3 of the people there were using 3rd party templates and/or tokens. World Championships at FFG Game Center doesn't get more official of an event, and I didn't see anyone there raise any issues.
