Ships and Cargo Holds

By Damack, in Game Masters

A few questions that I can't seem to find the answer to in the Core book.

1) Let's say my group buys 4 speeders to get around the planet. How can you figure how much space they will take up in their ships cargo hold.

2) Where can I find the size/encumbrance of ships, speeders etc etc

The rules on cargo capacity are very undeveloped. Much of it is going to be a "best guess" approach. I'd suggest that a speeder bike might take up 10-20 encumbrance, with the lower end representing one that is partially disassembled for easy transport while the highest value is one that is ready to ride.

I'd agree with HappyDaze. About 20. The razalon fc-20 - Darth Maul's speeder - might be 15, but I think 20 is a good starting point.

You're going to want to check out the "Free-Traders and Freebooters Catalogue" by Mr. Jegergryte here.

There's a link in the compiled resources list. It's an amazing resource overall, but there is also a fairly extensive part on cargo and ship-storage in there =)

/// EDIT: Just realized that it's not linked in the compiled resources... How can that be?

You're too nice Colourful.

That part is being updated, the latest of my "discussions" on that topic can be found on my blog .

Jegergryte- Great blog read it and kinda understand your thoughts behind it. Does that mean that the silhouette directly relates to how much space that item takes up.

I guess we are saying that it's a best guess scenario, maybe it's something that we could develop ourselves?

Items can be disassembled will hold a lesser value in a cargo hold. the Yt has a cargo of 250 so in theory the 4 speeders would take up 40 cargo hold?

Please guys correct me if I'm wrong..

I have only considered the relationship between silhouette and encumbrance a little, but based on the CRB: the encumbrance of a silhouette 1 character = 5+Brawn. So in theory that could amount to a maximum of 11 (or 12 with cybernetic enhancement?), plus carried stuff of course.

What this says about larger individuals or vehicles I don't know.

Well, the YT-1300 has a encumbrance capacity of 165 I think, but from what HD say, if the speeders were disassembled and stored, they could take up as little as 10 encumbrance per vehicle going by HD's guestimation. So that would be 40 encumbrance yes. Now, I'd say that if those speeder bikes were going to be easily accessible and ready to drive, they'd probably take up more space, closer to 20 than 10, as HD also seems to indicate. It sort of makes sense, the driver seat equals about 10 encumbrance and the vehicle itself adds 10 to that.

Landspeeders on the other hand would take up a lot more space.

In my game, when it comes to starships, I think I'm going to pass on the very abstract encumbrance rules and go by the actual weight the starship can hold, combined with what it can reasonably hold in terms of volume. Encumbrance involves both size/awkwardness and weight, whereas, for most purposes, freighters just need to worry about the weight. Volume is more a common sense issue. For instance, a landspeeder won't fit inside a YT-1300, even though that ship will carry 100 metric tons.

In answer to your question about the speeder bikes, if you go by weight, I'd estimate each speeder weighs half a ton, but takes up a disproportionate amount of space, limiting how much else you can carry if your other goods are bulky.

If you go by encumbrance, I think HappyDaze's estimate is a good one.
