Local Tournament report with double Firesprays

By Texx, in X-Wing Battle Reports

X Wing Miniatures Tournament at JJ’s 11-23-2013

I just recently got to play in a local tournament for X Wing. It was the standard 3 rounds (unless there was a tie) at 100pts.

Since World’s was not that long ago, I decided that I definitely had enough play time with the Tie Swarm. So I wanted to do something different…..and went completely opposite. I also hadn’t flown either of my firesprays in a competition, and I also had the shiny new Boba Fett card, so I decided on a dual firespray build:

Boba Fett + Navigator + PTL +Assault missile + seismic charge = 52

Krassis + Recon Specialist + Heavy laser cannon +seismic charge = 48

559874_sm-List.jpg

Yes, going with only two ships is very risky (especially since they aren’t falcons). However, I felt it would give myself a challenge, and get some more practice time moving big ships. First off, I figured that I needed to try the Fettigator build, cause it looked like too much fun not to try. Also, with only two shots a turn, I figured I needed some extra punch so I went with heavy later (as per normal on Krassis) and assault missile on Boba with PTL to help with the first engagement damage. Also seismic are pretty good to help with multiple ships, and is pretty much ‘free’ damage on lower level pilots. I also wanted to invest in their defense some (since losing half your points in one bad turn is never good). Since I usually want to focus with Krassis, Recon Specialist seemed like a pretty nice option (especially with no elite talent). I also like PTL to help Fett stay alive if he got into a bad situation, plus it really helps with a great alpha strike with the assault missile.

At the tourney, it looks like there is a good spread of rebels and imperials. There were BWs and XWs a plenty, as well as several firesprays and falcons. Not many Ties however, which was almost disappointing since I wanted to see what my AOE could do to a swarm.

Note that I did miss some pictures here and there, so I’ll do my best to describe what happens between the turns.

Game 1:

I got matched up against Max and his 4 ship rebel build. When I first saw it, I thought it was my nemesis build, but it was actually a little different. He was running:

2 Blues with FCS, 1 Rookie, and Wedge with swarm tactics

During setup, it looked like he wanted to fly the 4 ships mostly in formation right in the center. So I wanted to try and split up my firsprays, and make Fett look like the better target since there was less asteroids in his path.

G1 Turn 1

I decide to mostly go kind of slow, and head down my firing lanes. However, he kind of surprised me by going hard 2 right with everyone, looking to take out Krassis first. This was a good move.

559875_sm-G1%20SETUP.jpg

Nothing to shoot so onto the next turn.

G1 Turn 2

559876_sm-G1%20T1.jpg

Here is where my lack of experience with big ships starts to show. Krassis isn’t in a good position. I really want to bank slow, but that would screw over my T3 movement with an asteroid right in his path. So I went with a 2 bank hoping it would put me far enough to the right. Also, I don’t think I can bank well through the asteroids with Fett, so I go with a hard 3.

So, max does another 2 hard with his guys, and barrel rolls the BWs back. I make my moves. Fortunately, Krassis lands short of the asteroid, but it will be blocking most of his maneuvers for next turn. However, he does something similar with Wedge’s final position. Anyway we begin firing. Wedge shoots along with the rookie at PS9, and take off a few shields from Krassis (having two focus is pretty nice). I fire back and take both shields off Wedge with the heavy laser, and unfortunately Boba is out of range. I also got pretty lucky that both BW’s were just BARELY out of range of Krassis.

G1 Turn 3

559877_sm-G1%20T2.jpg

So, Krassis is in a bad spot. I can’t go straight since he will probably move up the rookie to push me back onto the asteroid. Can’t go hard 3 left since I would clip the asteroid, and be facing the board edge. I could go hard right 2, but I think that will leave me in R1 off all 4 of his ships, which is a death sentence. So I got for the 3 bank left and hope the BW on the far left banks in.

He moves, banks the BW in (sweet), but then barrel rolls back left right where I need to go (crap). The rookie and other BW move up slow. I move Krassis, but cannot clear the BW. I backup, and the back left sliver of my base lands on the asteroid (CRAP). Boba banks in and does focus/TL on Wedge. Thankfully for me, wedge tries to bank 1 in, but collides with the rookie (but misses the asteroid). He fires both XW’s, and takes off the last shields and a couple hull on Krassis. Then Fett decides that since Krassis screwed up his movement, he deserves to get hit and launches the assault missile. It obliterates Wedge’s 3 hull, and splashes the rookie, the blocking BW, and Krassis. So, that turn went pretty well, since I still have Krassis with a few hull and got wedge down.

559878_sm-G1%20T3.jpg

G1 Turn 4

I decide to get a bit risky with Krassis again. I decide on a hard 2 right to get around the asteroids, and move Fett up 1 to clear stress (and probably ram something). We make our moves….

559879_sm-G1%20T4.jpg

Surprisingly, the back BW moves first and bumps into the front BW, trying to block. The rookie goes 4 k-turn to get another shot on Krassis. The front BW moves over Krassis and rolls back to line up a shot on Fett. I move Krassis, and BARELY clear the BW (that was too close). Krassis, with the assault missile still fresh in memory, decides to drop his seismic which Fett is flying straight for. Fett moves up and rams the rookie. The Bomb goes off, takes the 2 nd shield off both the BW and the rookie, as well as hitting Fett.

In shooting, Fett scores a couple hits that bring the right BW to 1 shield left. Krassis whiffs his attacks on the BW directly behind him, but makes up for it with good evade against the rookie’s shots. I think the other two BWs take all (or all but 1) of the shields off Fett with their shooting. I think I’m still in the lead, but there are still 3 rebel ships remaining…

G1 Turn 5

The rookie moves up 1 and TL? Krassis, both BW’s do a 2 hard, hoping to get their arcs in line on Krassis. Fortunately for me, I decided to do a 3 k-turn, which put me out of the arc of both BW’s (another close call for Mr. Krassis). Fett decides to just bank into the rookie to keep good field position.

559880_sm-G1%20T5.jpg

Fett can’t shoot the 1 shield BW so he can only take off 1 shield from the left BW. Krassis then decides he doesn’t want to die yet, and with his reroll is able to take all 3 hull off the rookie, destroying him before he can shoot back.

G1 Turn 6

I miss a picture since I make a couple mistakes…….

Krassis wants to clear stress, but it I bank away I don’t think I’ll get a shot at the BW. However, he collides with the front BW after he does a bank and roll. I also go for a 1 bank on Fett, knowing that a 2 bank will hit the BW that just rolled in front of Krassis, however, I just BARELY clip the asteroid, leaving me no shot (but don’t take damage). The other BW does a hard turn, gets in range of Krassis.

So, the only ship with a shot this turn is the right BW, who is able to roll well and finishes off Krassis.

G1 Turn 7

He does a 2 k-turn with his blocking BW, and the other one moves up slow with TL and focus on Fett. Fett tries to get fancy, and does a 3 bank left, hoping to get out of the arc of the blocking BW. Unfortunately his base is too big and the BW can still see him… so he goes for a focus/evade.

559881_sm-G1%20T7%20AND%20END.jpg

Fett fires and gets two hits in the hurt BW, brining him to 2 hull left. Both BW’s fire back, and peel off a hull point from Fett from what I remember.

Unfortunately, at this point we run out of time since we have gone just over 60min. It would have been interesting, since I was ready to drop my seismic (which would have hit both BWs), and probably gotten a R1 shot on the stressed BW to finish him off. Then it would have been close to see if the other BW could finish off Fett through his PTL defenses.

We count up points, and I destroyed 52 points of his, and he destroyed my 48 point Krassis. So I barely pull off the win by the skin of my teeth!

Onto next round….

[ apparently there is a cap on how many images one can post in a single message, so I'll have to split this into 3 posts...]

Game 2:

Next up I was against my Fil. He is a very good Fantasy player, but doesn’t have a lot of game time on X wing. He was running…

BH + Vader + Gunner, Kath + Gunner, and Darkcurse.

I just noticed that his build was actually illegal (two crew on the firespray), but I don’t think it impacted the game very much since I think he forgot about Vader for a little bit while my shields were up.

Anyway, we have an alternating deployment. We more of less deploy on opposite sides, while I’m looking to have Fett run up the middle with Krassis coming in from the side…

559882_sm-G2%20SETUP.jpg

G2 Turn 1

Again I forgot to get a picture, but both my ships move up kind of slow, while his center ones move up a bit faster.

G2 Turn 2

I move up kind of slow again, with Fett going a bit faster, and Krassis banking around the asteroid. He then banks both the BH and Kath around the left asteroid, with Darkcurse doing a hard turn to get out of the way. The only shot is from Fett at R3 from Darkcurse with an evade, so nothing happens. I went ahead and did TL, just in case I don’t get a chance to TL something else later for the assault missile (was too risky to shoot it off with 4 red dice (no mods) and he had 3 green (with an evade token)).

559883_sm-G2%20T2.jpg

G2 Turn 3

Unfortunately I forget to get a picture here since things start getting ‘dicey’. He jumps the BH up 3. I then move Krassis up 1, just short of bumping Fett. He then hard turns dark, but barely bumps the BH. Kath moves up 1 straight I believe and focuses. Fett then moves up one, which perfectly lands him just over the corner of Krassis and just short of the BH. If the BH went 4 then he would have been bumped back. I go ahead and focus/evade, since I got 3 ships all staring Fett.

In shooting, I only manage to do a couple shields to the BH with two 4 dice attacks. He then fires back and does a few shield points to Krassis. So I think I got the better positioning on that round, but the dice were in his favor.

G2 Turn 4

Things start getting more hairy. I have to focus (pun intended) on Krassis, or else he might bite the dust if Fil keeps up his rolling. I decide to do a 2 hard bank, which should put him just over Darkcurse (was worried that a 3 bank would land him on the big asteroid. I also bank 1 with Fett hoping to clear stress. We then move:

559885_sm-G2%20T4.jpg

So a bit of a mess happens for Fil. I think he forgot the move order, and barely lands the BH on Krassis, so he doesn’t move. I am then able to just barely pull off my 2 hard turn with Krassis, putting him in a great spot. He then tries to 4 k-turn Dark, but barely clips the corner of Fett, so he doesn’t really go anywhere. Unsure where Fett was going, Kath does a big bank, which barely lands her base edge on the bottom left asteroid. Now, Fett really wants to do a 1 bank to clear stress, but I need to focus down the BH before he can start pumping out the Vader hits. So I lock in a 2 bank, and BARELY clear the BH (but I don’t clear the stress).

In shooting, he does really well and takes out 3 shields on Fett (ouch) while with both my ships I only get like a couple hits to bring the BH down by 1 or 2 hull. The dice aren’t liking me so much, and I only have a single shield on both my ships.

G2 Turn 5

I do a 3 k-turn with Krassis, and I am forced to do a 2 hard turn with Fett to avoid the asteroid. Fil then moves his ships to regroup on my side of the board. I don’t think there were any shots, but if there were they missed.

559886_sm-G2%20T5.jpg

G2 Turn 6

I do 1 banks with both Fett and Krassis to clear stress. His ships all position themselves to focus down the Fettigator. I believe the only shot was dark onto Fett, but I did evade so nothing happened.

559887_sm-G2%20T6.jpg

G2 Turn 7

This is the big turn. He moves the BH slow to get a good shot on Fett, along with darkcurse. I then 3 bank with Krassis, getting him JUST in range of the BH’s corner. Kath moves up slow, and Fett does a hard 2 to get in LoS of the BH. I focus and evade since all 3 ships are looking to punk me.

559888_sm-G2%20T8.jpg

Then the dice turn to my favor. I shoot with Fett at R1, and get like 2 hits through (bringing the BH to 3 hull left). Kath rolls badly and I evade at R3. Same goes for Darkcurse. Then Krassis scores 4 hits on the heavy laser, and the BH only gets 1 evade. I bring him down just before he gets a juicy R1 shot on Fett. Huzza!

G2 Turn 8

At this point I’m in very good position. (I also forget a picture here). Dark moves to block Fett. Krassis moves up slow to keep a nice shot on kath. Kath moves up and Fett bumps into Dark on his bank (to clear stress). I believe that Kath does a hit or 2 to Fett, but in return fire takes all her shields (and maybe a hull).

G2 Turn 9

I do a 4 k-turn with Krassis, thinking Kath will break off. Dark jumps over Fett, and Kath does a 3 hard turn into the middle of the board. Fett then does his nice bank, and get a TL+focus. I also remember to drop my seismic charge onto Dark and get a hit off him. In shooting, the super assault missile and heavy laser drop Kath, and Fil concedes the game with only an injured darkcurse left.

Alright, I’m at 2-0, so if I can win the last one I am golden.

Game 3:

I get paired up against Dee, one of the new guys to the store but had been playing X wing for a little while. He brought:

Wedge, Biggs, Rookie, and Blue + Advanced sensors

I had actually faced this build from him last week, and he wiped the floor with my 4 saber build. I’m hoping for a much different outcome this time, and flying much sturdier ships does help.

During setup, he splits up his force and puts the blue and rookie facing the center, and offsets Biggs onto the far right (he got initiative). I then place Krassis on the far right, and Fett in the center looking down the game in the asteroids. He then places Wedge to the right of Biggs. Note that there must have been a solar event since he ships were quite lit up.

559890_sm-G3%20SETUP.jpg

G3 Turn 1

I forget a picture again, but I move up kind of slow/medium with Krassis and Fett. He rushes forward, doing 4 with all his ships are the BW. Everyone is out of range.

G3 Turn 2

I move up kind of slow with Krassis and Fett again (since I have the secondary weapon advantage). His BW and XW do a hard 2 past the asteroid to line up on Krassis. Biggs and Wedge both move up quick, but thankfully are just out of R1 of Krassis.

Shooting goes ok for me. Krassis loses all? his shields from the 3 XW shots. Fett then gets one hit onto Biggs with his assault missile (boo), but Krassis does 2 more hits with his heavy laster. The pic below is part way into T3, so just imagine the XW and BW are a little further back.

559891_sm-G3%20T2.jpg

G3 Turn 3

I decide to get daring again with Krassis. I don’t have a good move with him since the lvl2’s are going to block left, and straight is also probably going to be block by Biggs. However, I go 4 forward, since I am at a slight angle compared to Wedge.

The lvl2’s move up as shown above. Biggs then does a hard 3? and barely bumps the BW. I then move Krassis, and his back corner is just NEARLY scraping Wedge. We both look at it, and decide to roll out to see if I was overlapping. I win the roll! This was big, since I got my double focus, out of the BW’s arc, and behind an asteroid for the XW shot. Fett does a bank left one, and get his back arc in range of Biggs. Wedge does the same move as Biggs and barely bumps as well. I got the perfect position on both my ships, so onto shooting!

559892_sm-G3%20T3.jpg

Wedge get a shield (or 2) off of Fett, brining him to 2 left? Fett then opens up on Biggs at R1 with focus and is able to finish him off! That allowed Krassis to get a (barely) R1 shot on Wedge, and scored 3 hits! The BW didn’t have a shot, and the XW does a shield or misses through the asteroid.

G3 Turn 4

Dee has a hard time trying to fly his ships around the asteroid, get in firing position, while worrying about the two charges I’m about to drop (I definitely remembered them this time!). The BW does a hard 2 to get behind Krassis, and the rookie has to bank off to avoid the asteroid. Both my ships drop their charges, and do K-turns. Wedge moves up to shoot at Fett (R2 I think?).

559893_sm-G3%20T4.jpg

Both seismic charges go off, and do one hit to Wedge (brining him down to 1 HP left), both shields on the rookie, and a shield on the BW. Not too shabby! Wedge then hits Fett hard, and takes off all his remaining shields. Fett fires back, but whiff’s his shot! Fortunately, Krassis barely had the arc on Wedge, so he blows Wedge away with his heavy laster. The BW fires at Krassis and scores a hit.

G3 Turn 5

The rookie does a 4 k-turn to get back into the fight. Unfortunately, I think Dee over thought what I was going to do with Krassis. He decided to roll right, and then do a 2 k-turn. Unfortunately, he rolled a little too far forward, and the corner of his base landed off the board. So the BW was a free kill. I bank up with Krassis, and go 1 forward with Fett. I’m just in range of the Rookie, so I do TL+focus.

559894_sm-G3%20T5%20AND%20END.jpg

Fett starts off, and rolls well to get 3 hits in, but the Rookie whiffs his roll and get 0 evades. With his shields gone, that means the Rookie bites the dust!

Thus after 3 rounds, I am the only undefeated player out of the group. I take 1 st and get a store credit prize, with Dee taking 2 nd and my buddy Daniel taking 3 rd . There were also a few other raffle prizes (I won another small store credit, teehee). Overall I think it was a great tournament, and was run quite smoothly.

I think the list may have been a little too risky to take to regional’s, but it sure was a blast to run. It was also good to see how the firesprays run in a competition. Oh and the Fettigator never went down! I think the limited edition card must be lucky or something, it sure dun good for me!

Thanks all for reading. I also will be working on a report from the tournament in Oct. when I ran a 4 bomber Splash Zone list, but it still needs several hours of work.

Great writeup. You did well. Since I tend to fly large base ships, I've taken to flying obstacle courses. Set up random asteroids and proximity mines, then trying to navigate through them. I really need to get better at eyeballing distances and placement of large ships.

thanks for the write up, when i saw 2 ship build, didnt think you had a chance :D

That is an interesting list you are running, I have flown one almost identical myself. I personally prefer this option as I get better results with it due to consistent damage output and messing with opponent movement via stress. Congrats on solid wins though. Two Firespray lists are sorely under-rated in my opinion.

My double spray list is ...

Boba , hlc /push/ recon/ engine upgrade

Kath , push/recon

At first I took the list to a friends group game for fun not thinking it would be competitive. I was shocked, it took out 2 B wings/wedge / Tyco and Han decked out in the Falcon. The firespray with push and recon are hard to take down fast. By the time I was done boba had 1 shield left and kath had 3 hull left.

Hm, ya those two lists also look like fun.

I do want to try out Proton bombs, I just don't have a ton of sucess with bombs, so I prefer to keep them cheap, but if you can pull off a double proton, oh man....

It does sound tempting to do a PTL double focus+evade, makes the firespray look like Soontir ;)

If forces them to over extend and double up to have a chance to put any decent damage on one per turn. One thing that I noticed was how much you can actually count on when you have ptl and recon. The only thing you have to worry about it blanks the rest your golden firing and defending. I thought about throwing in stealth but the odds would have that maybe delaying damage two turns. Between ptl and recon you can count on at least 2 hits and two cancels in combat each turn. The engine on boba I found were great to spin his front arc or to boost to range three each turn.

The high PS and consistent damage in my list make it pretty nasty. The high PS makes landing the proton bombs a fair bit easier and those things are devastating.

I was just rereading that last battle. I didn't think you could roll into an illegal position so how did the B-Wing fly off the board? I'll need to assume it rolled first using AS and then fell off with what amounts to a failed K-turn.

@StevenO: So it's correct in his report ;)

He decided to roll right, and then do a 2 k-turn
