Attempting to start a league. Need some help.

By Terane, in UFS General Discussion

Let me buff up on the back story a bit before I get to my questions.

I used to play UFS in GA almost 2 years ago. Within the past year I've moved to CO. The area I moved to is one of the lagest cities in the state (Grand Junction).

To my dissappointment I found that not to many people here play UFS and the ones that do are scattered about the city. After talking to the owner of the biggest (and practically only) game store in town I was able to convince him to allow me to hold UFS gaming on a weekday each week. The problem being is that first I'd have to recruit players and show that people were interested in the game. If all went well then he'd start selling the product.

The current issue is that after much time and toiling that I have found many players and introduced many more in UFS. However most are unable to purchase the cards due to there not being a local retailer and being unable to purchase onlne. Many more are sceptical to buy cards because they are unsure of whether or not this league will bloom with new players.

.

Ok, all that being said now I go to my questions and the reasons or this topic.

The foremost question in my mind is what happened to the Demo Deck distribution that used to be available?
If I could get a hold of some Demo Decks then I would have no issue promoting the begin of a great revolution here in town.
16 Decks would be enough to cover all new players to the game.

I also ask for any tips on event organization tat anyone here can offer me. Creative criticism is welcome.

This is a bit obscure of a thing that was suggested to me to ask, but I will nonetheless.
Any card donations will be welcome if you have any cards that are out of rotation or any cards that you no longer need then I ask for donations.
If you are interested in donations then please message me so that we may work something out.

Like I said any help at all is most appreciated.

Something that you might wanna try (especially since it's a fairly new area UFS-wise) is start a month long Sealed event. It goes like so:

  • There's a 6 pack buy-in for any players new to the event (so this way, down the road, they can still join in). They make a 40 card-minimum deck and use that for the tournament.
  • After each tournament, you make sure to keep everyone's deck (and their extra cards) seperate, place them in a card box or two, and have the store manager lock them up somewhere in the store.
  • For every other tournament afterwards, there's a 2 pack buy-in, which they use to add to their existing deck. Tournaments after the first one I allow the players to trade with the cards to better help out their decks (usually done before the first round).
  • If a card is pulled that a player really wants to use outside of the Sealed event, they can take it out of their pool but that copy can't be used for the remainder of the event.

This way, it makes the playing field a bit more level for newer players, boosts their collection, and gives the vets a fresh take on UFS. When I run events like this, I tend to have them go for 4 (or 5) days throughout a month or two. And since your store doesn't have any UFS, you could pick some boxes up cheap from CoolStuff (They already have their new stuff cheaper than other stores, and they often have sales on the older sets) or various ebay sites. Charge $2.50 a pack and you'll be breaking around even for the cost of a box (plus shipping) AND it's a cheaper way for others to get into the game.

Just an idea. I hope your group comes around nicely.

Because it wants postmarked before March 27th?!?

OP: You got any spare cash? Of course you do, you're planning on playing a TCG! Go somewhere... anywhere and buy a starter box or two, and a booster box or two. Then sell it for normal retail value, giving all the money you make on it to the gaming store, or something. You'll lose out in the end, unless you can get the store owner to compensate you a bit in te future.

Or maybe tell the store owner you'll go halfsies on them. You'll buy half of what they bring in for the first 4 boxes or something.

Next up you need demo decks. Contact FFG for that (call the generic number listed on their website main page).

Good luck! The only other thing to do is to buy the stuff yourself, have a ton of it, and start giving it away in 30 card deck incriments as your own form of a 'demo deck'.
