storage

By Duke of Advil, in X-Wing

Sorry for some reason my phone is not giving me much in the line of searching, but I do have a question. I seen some people posting pics in the past of foam cut-out protectors for their ships. Who makes them, are they customizable and can you post a link for them?

The two I'm most aware of are Battlefoam and KR Multicase.

Battlefoam: Uses a harder foam and figures are stored without stands, so they can store more figured per square meter. Slots are designed for a specific ship. Their website has a custom layout creator, so you can design a layer to fit your specific fleet. Cases are expensive but very well crafted. http://us.battlefoam.com/star-wars/ (This is the one I went with)

KR Multicase: Softer foam and figures are stored with stands, so you don't have to assemble ships before combat. Softer foam will be easier on custom paint jobs. Slots are generic, so multiple types of ships can be placed in them. Foam is usually in half trays for ease of customization, but no truly custom layout option that I found. Cases can be inexpensive but well made cardboard or rugged aluminium. http://www.krmulticase.com/buyarmystorage.aspx?system=STAR&army=XW (my buddy uses this one)

I'm sure there are more options out there, but these were the two I looked closely at.

I'll add a vote for the Battlefoam. I honestly don't care for their business practices, but their product is second to none. I use a Pack 432 with the Wave 1/2 Trays, and pluck foam to fill out the other levels and handle my overflow (between providing ships for the whole family, and running demos, I have a LOT of stuff).

Battlefoam is doing a 25% off sale for Black Friday too, so it's a good time to get it if you're going to.

I don't have a KR case for my X-Wing stuff, but I do have their cases for all my 40k and Warmachine models, and I love them. Being modular means if you ever change up the stuff you regularly play with you can swap parts of the foam easily, and their stuff is really high quality and relatively cheap. I'm probably getting an X-Wing case from them for the holidays, I'll post back here with a review if you want.

I've got the KR stuff and it's superb!

I personally use the pluck-foam with my Motor Pool from saboldesigns. It may not be as fancy as the others, but it gets the job done.

Not sure if that's what you were going for, but it is another option i suppose...

I'd stay away from Battlefoam. The guy is trying to patent cutting foam with a laser, which will have a negative impact on the hobby if it is ever approved.

I went for some pluck foam variant too, it has it advantages since it is cheaper and you can (to a degree) incrementally extend your layers according to your fleet expansion. The main disadvantage, besides the work of plucking, is the resolution of the grid, mine is 14mm and for some of the fine parts that's not ideal, but as mentioned before it works.

This won't happen. He's filed several suits over this already, and all of them have been dismissed with prejudice. There's basically zero chance of an enforceable patent coming for this at this point.

As I said above, I really don't like the guy, or his business practices, but you really can't argue with the quality of the product.

No, but you can vote with your wallet. I don't do business within certain industries with certain companies because of past behaviors, regardless of their prices at the time of purchase.

I have battlefoam pack720 with there special x-wing trays and love it. Its expensive but it keep the mini safe. But I find that they have costly shipping

Oh, I certainly agree - I refused to buy anything at all from Battlefoam for a long time, and still use my Sabol for most of my stuff. And if there were anything out there that was even close to the quality and usefulness of BF's trays, I'd happily go there regardless of the cost.

Sadly, there's not. Pluck foam just can't match the density and security of the custom cut, especially for oddly-shaped items like X-wing. KR is a decent option, but I find their foam to be very flimsy, their cases are either cardboard boxes or expensive aluminum, and their layout approach leaves a LOT to be desired (whoever came up with the idea of storing ships on the stands has obviously never played the game at all). At a certain point avoiding BF means supporting someone else, and while none are anywhere near the raging ass that Romeo is, they aren't exactly burning up the industry with new innovation. I'm all for punishing bad business practices, but producing an inferior product is pretty poor practice too.

That's a big part of why I don't understand his approach to business. His product is head and shoulders above anyone else in the market, there doesn't seem to be any need for the sort of tactics he pulls out.

You ought to google Battlefoam guy's efforts to break into the MLB bat market. Comedy.

I won't buy his stuff due to his behavior, although his wife is broiling hot.

I've got the KR stuff, myself, and adore it

Battlefoam is the only one I know of that lets you design your own layout and have it cut to order.

I use The APC from Portable Warfare and really like it.

- Sabol is pluck foam.

- KR and Battlefoam are custom cut.

- KR stores ships with stands attached

- Battlefoam stores ships and components separately

- KR foam is blue, light, and very flexible

- Battlefoam foam is heavier, with a dense bottom

- Battlefoam has a system for laying out custom cuts, but is the only one

KR is a decent option, but I find their foam to be very flimsy, their cases are either cardboard boxes or expensive aluminum,

Don't knock the card cases til you try em, they're a lot more resilient than some random cardboard box, and at least mildly water resistant.

thanks for all the Info and feedback on this topic. many options to weigh before I can move ahead but this will greatly help.

Right now Battlefoam are with Black friday sale 25% off.Just ordered another one for the Sail of Glory game that is coming soon.

I use portable warfare

I've found that the foam is pretty solid and easily customizable. I don't just pluck out the whole piece of foam tough, I cut out support for each model so that it's not bouncing around too much.

Everything I use to transport my minis came from Wal-Mart. The trays with the ships came from hardware and are $12 each, the tray with the tokens and dice came from Sporting Goods and was $4, and the tote came from Housewares and was $10. The tote will hold 4 trays of ships, the token tray, and my binder with rulebook and squad lists.

These aer older photos but I have my 4 B-Wings, 4 HWKs, 4 Bombers, and 2 Shuttles in here now. I still have plenty of room for the 4 Imp Aces I have coming. Long story short I paid about 1/2 what Battlefoam or KR would cost to carry more stuff.

Battlefoam is insanely overpriced. The cheapest and most efficient storage that I've found is Plano (and not the $12 one posted above).

For $3 at Home Depot, you can get the mid-sized Plano case which can store about 20 ships. For $5, you can get the larger one which can store almost everything else. If you were trying to conserve space, you can store about 30 ships worth of stuff (cards, tokens, everything) in about 3 of the large containers.

The Battlefoam company has learned the hard way several times why it will be stuck in a niche market with customers that are accustomed to overpaying for goods.

Agreed you can find cheaper planos, but I like the fact these are perfect for just trimming the blister insert and having the ships stored in the same tray they came in. Less moving around and the look nice....almost displayed.
