The Tattered King

By roneba2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Another question from last session, the first using The King in Yellow. During the Mythos fase, we draw The Tattered King. So, after 5 turns, whoever is in the streets should be devoured. One of the players argued that this effect should last forever: the King arrived in Arkham and will kill everyone wandering in the streets. I decided that this effect should last only during the fifth turn, because the card returns to the box, and doesn´t remain in the board. Who is right?

Pass and Fail conditions are one-time unless noted otherwise (e.g. The Great Ritual).

If we take the other King in Yellow's other rumor, Virulent Disease, we can conclude that when the rumor is failed, the investigators aren't in a constant state of setting their Sanity and Stamina to 1. Virulent Disease and The Tattered King apply their effects once and are done.

I agree. It is one time effect. Especially since it goes to the box. Cards in the box no longer effect the game as they are "removed from the game".

That is incorrect.

There are some cards that are removed from the game and still effect the game, like this one:

To be fair, that card does say 'from now on', which the card in question does not.

Just wanted to point out that a card being removed isn't an automatical indicator that it stops having an effect on the game. It just means it will not enter play again.

I've already specifically considered The Great Ritual before making a blanket statement about rumors being one-time in effect, and decided that it wasn't worth mentioning because Great Ritual actually says that its failure effect persists for the rest of the game. It is an exception, not a rule.

Just to get that straight:

We all agree that the rumor cards fail - and pass -effects take place only once, if not mentioned otherwise on the card itself (such as on " The Great Ritual " and " Southside Strangler ") and that discarding them to the box has nothing to do with how long the fail - or pass -effect takes place, as all rumor cards are discarded in the end... right?

Right, right—Rumors are out of the game, one way or another. You never see the same one twice.

Well, you will never PLAY the same one twice but you may SEE it more than once. If another Rumor is in play when you drew another one, it would get discarded. Cause a reshuffle and it may come out again. lengua.gif

Oh, Brian. You and your technicalities.

You could also "see" a rumor twice if you use Jacqueline Fine to discard it once and you get it again later. Or if you're supposed to draw Mythos cards until you get one with a gate location (for Servants of Glaaki), and you get a Rumor without a gate location.

...or if it's the first mythos card of the game.

...I think this topic is covered now.

Says you. This is fun.

How about when you're drawing two mythos cards because of a failed Great Ritual rumor, and the gate-only card is a rumor!

FULL CIRCLE

Right right. I was jumping to conclusions too early again there.

By the way, don't forget you can use "Arcane Insight"... you could actually see the rumor every turn!

Ooh crafty. And I'm sure there are some encounters that allow you to peek at upcoming mythos cards.

yes there a several locations that do that!

The Tattered King would be funny if it devoured people for the rest of the game.

Hurm. You could only defeat monsters that are roaming the streets by closing gates or getting devoured by the end of the turn...

If that's funny , then it's the hysterical giggling kind of funny.
