I need a name!

By daysanew, in Game Masters

I got a session tonight in 2 hours and am creating a new creature to inhabit Chlogona but I can't think of a decent name for it. Ideas?

(Very) rough description:

They are smallish spider like creatures covered in scales, each having 6 legs, 4 of them spider like they use to scurry around on, the front two ending in sharp talons that glisten with poison. They are used to spear small prey or the poison can be used to slow down and eventually kill bigger prey. Their mouths are spider like fangs and each has four eyes.

Garfeds

Flemdors

Rakk-spiders

Gormtars

Valrnips

Jar Jars

Ken Bakkirs

Chimdlers

Vakks

Orgos

Glemtrals

Obbadoos

Zatts

Porkids

Are these spiders known to exist, or did they suddenly pop up?

If they are (well) known, I would indeed try to name them by their 'official' name. Rakk-spiders seems like a solid choice (maybe Rakks for short). However, if they 'came out of nowhere', I'd be inclined to let people call them by their appearance. I'm thinking of something like Crawlers or Skitters. (For reference see The Walking Dead. One group calls them Walkers, while another calls them Biters.)

Thanks. Rakk Spider will be the official name though the player may or may not ever know that.

Let your group name them, as if they were the first ones discovering them!

Love this idea.

But you might want to use it sparingly. I try to let my players name a few NPCs we meet, but they tend to come up with names like "Smiley" and "Waffles" ...

I like that idea too. They didn't get to the encounter last session, maybe the next one.

Of course if they name it, next they will want to capture it and sell it for money...

If they can take the time and effort to stun it and apprehend it, they can do what they want. Heck, they could even try to raise them up as war pets, for all I'd care if it was my group. That's probably what my group would do anyways.

Start adventure with "Sir, do you have anything to declare?" End adventure with "Well I guess we won't be going back to that planet again..."

Oh I'd go along with it, it just wasn't something I'd considered. Besides an angry poisonous spider trapped on their starship.... I can only hope the pilot rolls a despair.

A dangerous spider around a starship hold that can probably fit in any nook or cranny. How can it possibly go wrong?

As a word of caution, be careful about naming things off the top of your head. My previous GM had about ten NPCs named Jimmy because he tended to name things on the spur of the moment.

I named one of the characters Wes Jansen because it sounded Star Warsy. Turned out there is actually a character in the Star Wars universe named Wes Jansen. I must have heard it at some point and just forgotten it. Forced for a name in short order, the character became Jes Wansen.

On the latest Order 66 Podcast, Jay Little recommended having an alphabetical list of names for things that you can draw from at will.

Having it be alphabetical helps keep your names distinct. Maybe the random planet your PCs landed on was called Andooine, then maybe the monster they fight there is called a Bublaphage. And then maybe they travel to Clorith and meet a bounty hunter called Drayven.

Anyway, thought it was a nice tip!

Yes - I'll be using this one as well!
