Rank Limitations

By Recon-022, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Been waiting for a 40k roleplaying game to come out for over 20 years, about time! Just started playing and just finished GM'n "Illumination" for my group. Love the game so far! My qeustion, am I the only GM that doesn't use the rule that once you advance to the next rank in your class you can no longer purchase Skills or Talents fron the previous Rank charts? Seems like a weird rule to me. Perhaps it prevents the characters from getting too powerful too fast?

I know there are some things you can purchase more than once at a rank, doesn't this rule kinda make that useless? Unless you spend most or all of your XP on those abilities and nothing else. Also, why could a character learn a skill at a lesser rank that he could no longer learn at a higher rank? Did he or she suddenly forget how to learn it? Of course like I said, we have just started playing, so maybe I read the rules wrong and you CAN purchase skills and such from previous charts. I'm sure the veterans have their reasons why it makes the game balanced through their playing experience and I would defininetly like to hear them. Thanks in advance for responding!

Ive never heard of this rule. Ive always assumed you could purchase lower level things when you are a higher level.

Hell, if the GM lets you, you can purchase things not even in your class

Yeah, I assumed it as well, then I read somewhere else (which I can't recall of course) that once you advance to the next rank, you HAVE to purchase from that chart (GM's discretion of course), maybe I misread...

I'm not using it anyway, but I was a little worried I might really whack the game out of balance later on in the characters careers...

You heard wrong then and have been doing things correctly all along. Read the first sentence on pg 42 paying special attention to the words that fallow "or" ;-)

Sweet! Don't have the book in front of me right now but I will check it out. Thanks!!
