Despair Table

By Kainrath, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I started putting together a Despair Table (1-100) for use when the GM is out of ideas or stuck...
Things like "weapon explodes, drops weapon, environmental changes, more enemies arriving, etc..."

Is this something that would be helpful?

Anyone using something like this already?

I thought this would be a good place to post ideas of how to use Despair...

Despairs and Triumphs should be entirely contextual IMHO, not sure a list could do justice to the potential.

Well I am not so certain that ot woudl work because the Despair, or Triumph if you will, will always be relative to the actual situation. You cant have a scene where there is no combat with weapons and someone rolls a despair then you go to the table and the result is - weapon breaks. Taht would make for a Benny Hill comedy sketch rather than a narrative encounter in Star Wars.

On the other hand I guess it also comes to peoples play styles. I personally cant imagine being stuck for a despair or triumph narrative. The pre-amble is there for me in the manner of what the player is trying to do.

As an aside, I recommend that anyone trying to create more tables for this game actually avoid doing so. This is very much a D20 mentality/approach. I have a group where some are still struggling to disect themselves from a rigid system. Like trying to ween them off crack/cocaine.

This needs to be a fluid game that avoids the stops and starts where people are going to tables or page references looking for rules. eep on sticking to that format and you should break through the D20 mode and come out on top much satisfied with your game sessions.

I could see making a list just to have examples, but I wouldn't bother rolling against such list as they would be very situational as others have mentioned. It isn't always easy to do Improv, which is why not everyone does it. Not everyone is a Robin Williams, heheh.

I think the list would be useful, even if only for inspiration.
