Expansion Monsters in Base game

By jansen1975, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi folks,

Just wondering if an OL is able to use monsters from the expansions in the base game campaign? I own all the expansions but the group is new to Descent so we are starting with the basic campaign but was hoping the Expansion monsters can be used to add more choice for the OL.

As Open Groups, yes. As long as the the expansion monsters you want to use have the traits allowed by the encounters you are playing. Hence, you could use Fire Imps in Masquerade Ball Encounter 1.

That is the beauty of the Open Groups system in Descent.

EDIT: And with the arrival of Lieutenant packs, you wiull soon be able to use your favorite Lieutenant in any campaign.

Thanks for clarifying that.

We are running our second Descent Weekender next week with five players and lots of snacks and drinks so I am looking forward to using the new monsters on them. Imps look pretty nasty so definatley want to try using them :)

The new LT packs look great I have preordred the ones available in the UK and the Hero/Villan ones look really good fun.

I found the Imps to be a bit meh. The Hybrid Sentinels however....oh yes, they are well worth using. Mind you, I am sure there are lots of overlords out there who think the opposite. It depends on your party, if you have a lot of characters with a might of 2 or less then hybrid sentinels are a good choice as they get +1 damage against them!

I think the Hybrid Sentinels are good no matter what the circumstances.

I also have a particular fondness for Harpies. They might have low health, but the Swarm ability can get insane, and their speed is phenomenal. Plague Worms are great, also. I haven't used the Labyrinth monsters too frequently yet, other than the Carrion Drakes who are amazing. I'm sure I will love the Arachyura, but I'm waiting to use it when my group actually does the full Labyrinth of Ruin campaign.

Yes you can and having expansions offer more open group choices which is nice.

My favorite monster so far is the Bargests. Simply love them. Great attacks, a bit harder to hit in range and the Howl is great. Coupling them with anything else making me evily grin!

Hybrid Sentinels, Flesh Moulders, Volucryx Reavers...also have my vote.

Bargest are also my favorite base game monster group, but that's more because I like illustrating them. In some ways they can be more powerful then Shadow Dragons.

I have revisited Hybrid Sentinels as of recently and have made them a favorite as well. The new Harpies are there as well. It's pretty crazy when a monster can move 14 spaces in a turn.

Hello,

I am very very new to this game, but already in love.

I would like to expand on this question.

Can the new expansion hero's and classes also be used in the base game?

How about all the new expansion cards?

edit:

To clarify, i do not own the game yet. I've ordered it and i expect te receive it in the coming days.

This seems like a game for which i want all the expansions, which would be even better if almost all aspects of an expansion can be used in the base game campaigns.

Expansion material is made to be used with the base game. You can use monsters in the expansions as open groups if they share the traits allowed in the encounter and you can play any hero in any campaign. (with exception of the new Ally/Lieutenant characters agents being released, which sometimes are not allowed in certain encounters or campaigns due to their role in that scenario.)

You are absolutely correct. If you have the spare money, purchase everything 2nd edition has to offer. This will give your hero players the most options as far as character selection is concerned, and allow the OL to pick the best monsters to complete the quests and deal with the heroes effectively.

You can probably survive using proxies for all the 1st edition characters and monsters that you'll get from purchasing the Conversion Kit. If you are looking to purchase them for the figures though; it'll cost in the realm of $550 USD for the four 1st edition box sets. Then you'll still need to get the Dungeonquest game (Ebay for $55-60 and is hilariously funny by itself) which contains six more characters in the Conversion Kit, and then the four limited edition models which cost another $100 dollars or so.

I recommend sticking with the proxies unless you're OCD like me.
