V-Wing Fighter

By LeoHowler, in X-Wing

That's right, I'm starting another topic for a theoretical fighter. This time the old but not quite outdated V-Wing! What's cool is that we could either have this as an Imperial fighter, or possibly for the much discussed potential of Pirate/Black Sun forces. For the sake of simplicity, we'll stick with the Empire for now~

So what we have is basically a predecessor to both the A-Wing and also TIE Fighters, while somehow still being fairly formidable (not a fan of the prequel movies for how unbalanced the technology level seems to be...) in the hands of a capable pilot. It is small, not terribly fast (it's roughly the speed of a B-Wing) and features shields, four laser cannons and an astromech droid. Later versions did omit the droid, however for the sake of coolness and for having an astro upgrade for the Imperials for a change we'll keep it. Some games and action figures have secondary weapons including missiles and bombs (really Battlefront II?) but I'm having trouble finding any space they'd be able to fit this extra ordinance. Anyway, here is my outline for stats!

Attack: 2

Agility: 3

Hull: 2

Shields: 1

Actions: Focus, Boost, Barrel Roll

Upgrades: Astromech Droid, Bomb

Ksi Squadron Pilot: Pilot Skill 2, 17 Points

Comments? Other Pilots? Criticisms? Droid cards?

This makes my eyes bleed. Sorry I don't mean to throw you or offend you in any way. I'ts just that I hate this bastard.

@TheRealStarkiller: Do you hate it as much as you hate the E-Wing? ;)

He hates everything...

If i had to guess, he probably is like that one guy from the Zohan.

The V-Wing stats look fine, but it's a lot like an interceptor!

Im with Starkiller. That is one seriously dubious ship.

But then it was created by the design team who realised that R2 wouldnt fit in a Jedi fighter wing socket with out dangling his little robolegs out of the bottom and decided to just remove the bottom half of R2 rather than fix the bad design work. Which to my eyes is a crime. With as many people as they had working, supposedly skilled designers (i say supposedly because i cant thing of a single fighter i like from the prequels except 'maybe' the ARC170) they should have said 'well, that is a problem, but we take pride in our skills so lets fix the issue properly

Well, Im just direct and honest ...

I hate some of the Tie Uglies and I hate those bastards made of parts of Ties and rebel craft and the 'somewhere in between'-ships. But I really like the videos from AVGN ;)

I love the V wing, but I would change a few things. I would reduce the fighters firepower, although I love rolling 3 attack dice, I would find it odd that the predecessor to the Tie and A wing would have more puch on a such a small frame. I would add the bomb symbol to the upgrade bar. We have more choices when it comes to fighters with missiles, but few for bombs. And, who doesn't love dropping those right in the middle of a Tie swarm.

Everone used them, so they could come up with cool cards for Empire, Rebel, and Pirate/Black Sun.

It's kinda ugly but definitely "recognizable". Not sure if that's a good thing here.

No, no, no to the stats. Why does everyone insist on 3,3,#,# for every new ship they restat?

Astromech is meh for the empire. Bombs might be ok but this would have to a outclass the scimitar bomber for that role.

I think they did the exact same thing with the Aethersprite (Jedi starfighter). The astromech doesn't really fit.

I would go with 2/3/2/1, with a slow but decent dial, (so good number of greens but at low speeds). Any that would be used by the Imps wouldn't have the Astromech slots. However at the time of the X-Wing Miniature game they were mainily used by the Mandalorians rather than the Rebels and the Imperials.. So they would be very 3rd faction.

I'd like to see some "holdovers" from the Republic era, the types that would have been used during the Dark Times and the early days of the Rebellion. FFG could keep their vision intact, but it'd bring us more sweet ships. The V-Wing and Z-95 are great examples of this - and they're actually on opposite sides of the conflict to boot!

I'd rather see this V-Wing: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/V-wing_airspeeder

That would require the game to allow for in-atmosphere combat ships (but would also open up snowspeeders).

Ah yes, I remember that one. Was tough to fly, but oh man was it fun. But yes, we need T-47's and other atmospheric craft too.

Anywho... I'm not really sure where I stand on it's stats now, given how many differing opinions there are in here. I'm not asking everyone to love the craft, I'm just thinking aloud using the forum. I might change the base number for attack and add the bomb, but that really just makes it a slightly speedier and more fragile TIE bomber, which, although interesting, really castrates it. On the other hand, laser cannons from the time might not be as powerful, so four old guns might run it down to 2 attack, so I can see that being a possibility.

...But I'm not dropping the astromech.

Well it's the precursor for the Tie-Fighter and the A-Wing so I can't see it having better firepower than either. The way I see it is Tie Fighter is the mass production model, the A-Wing is it modernized.

So 2/3/2/1 feels right. The Tie has better hull, the A-Wing has better shields.

Dial-wise I would go with the A-Wing dial but everything lowered by one speed, it was maneuverable but had low flight speed.

Though the Astromech slot was dropped when the Imperials mass produced it, I would probably keep it.. but maybe not on every squadron (PS version), representing some squadrons running older versions maybe.

I worry that none of the astromechs are listed 'Rebel Only' though.

True ... so astromech slots will be 'rebel only' for all eternity ... sadly ...

Dropped the ship cost, due to a lowered attack value.

Leo,

my take on the V-wing would be more like...

PS: ?- whatever you determine for generic/unique pilots

AT: 3- It has 4 laser cannons and unless we know that they are weaker than Rebel/Imperial standard, 4 guns = 3 attack dice

EV: 2- I don't remember this thing being overly maneuverable plus, it shows the improvements made to the Imperial standard TIE

HU: 2- it is smaller than eithe X-wing or TIE/Ln plus it i s getting a bit old ...

SH: 1- According to Wookieepedia (and who could ever challenge that august source?) it is shielded (but probably not up to Rebelion Era standards)

Options: Astromech Droids and/or Bombs. Could make two versions: A) used by Rebels, Pirates, Mercenaries, etc... with Astromech Droid and B) used by Empire, Pirates, Mercenaries, etc... with Bomb.

Maneuver Dial would be same as Y-wing.

This could be something of a transitional ship, showing some of the changes in design philosopy between the Republic and the Empire (especially with the A & B versions, above), with droids and shields falling out of favor, compared with speed, maneuverability and mass production/standardization.

Chris Maes

I really like the stats as they are now. 2-3-2-1 seems perfect for this fighter - it was basically the first TIE fighter! I'd like to see it with the Tie-fighter's dial, with maybe a red 5 or some-such. I do question it's cost a bit though - you can get an A-wing which has 1 more shield, 1 more action (TL) and a better dial for the same cost? I'd drop the cost to 15, Mayyybe 16 just because it has a bomb slot.

That all said, this is one of my favorite fighters from the prequels.

2-2-2-1

It has four barrels, but it isn't a x-wing or b-wing live hitter. You could make an argument for the 3 agility, but I believe (especially with EU) that it is better to err on the conservative. I can not think of a clone wars era ship that I would give 3 agility to except possibly the Jedi interceptor and the trifighter, so only two agility would keep in par.

It can't be a great ship since it wasn't really ever used a lot even during its hay day.

I like the look of this ships

But I think 2-2-2-1 would be the better option

And so imperial would have access to R2-D2? Lol not like he would do much good on this ship, but other astromechs might

It's not R2-D2, it's his identical evil twin :P

I wrong?) and not only that, it's also used nearly up to the time of the rebellion. So the V-Wing would make sense as an addition, perhaps more than a Z-95 if you don't like the EU stuff!

Well a lot of the uglies make no sense i agree to that, but this ship is in the movies, (prequel trilogy or am

I am pretty sure that the only clone fighter that appears in the movies is the ARC-170.

The V-Wing appears at the end of Revenge of the Sith when Palpatine's shuttle lands on the pad carrying the grievously injured Darth Vader. Two of them escort it down and then fly off.
