Strange Guesses About Wave 4

By evanger, in X-Wing

Let's daydream about the Tractor Beam special rule card (and ship modification card) that may come with an XG-1 Assault Gunboat and G-1A Mist Hunter .

Mechanics-wise, it may act like an ion cannon to start: roll a number of attack dice as a secondary weapon attack (Range 1-3), if you get even one net hit or crit, disregard the remaining dice, deal no damage, and the tractor lock has been established. The rolling of defense dice will allow nimble ships to escape the tractor lock in the first place. As a side note, you probably cannot tractor lock a ship whose base is larger than your own.

Then you need some kind of simple mechanic to represent the tractor beam's effect. Here are some possibilities:

1. Target ship is unable to move at all (sounds too harsh). Perhaps lose a single Activation Phase?

2. Target ship is only able to do green maneuvers

3. Target ship is pulled straight toward tractor beam ship 1 range increment (a bit fiddly and hard to do correctly, especially with regard to preserving facing, etc)

4. Much like when a stressed ship attempts a red maneuver, perhaps the tractor beam operator gets to choose the target ship's maneuver dial setting for the next Activation Phase.

I am tempted to say this modification can only be added to certain ships (the TIE Defender, Mist Hunter, and XG-1 all mention the use of said device, as well as capital ships and larger, of course). I don't think this should be added to an A-Wing, however...

Here is the full list of ships I could see coming out. Those on this list meet the criteria of being Rebellion era vessels that either are iconic and recognizable or have a tie in that is (i.e. the bounty hunters seen in ESB each have ships).

Imperial
Small size
TIE/D Defender - too nice looking to miss out
XG-1 Assault Gunboat - hyperdrive and shields for non-Bounty Hunter Imperials
G-1A ( Mist Hunter ) - bounty hunters Zuckuss & 4-Lom
JumpMaster 5000 ( Punishing One ) - bounty hunter Dengar; first Imp to use an astromech droid
Aggressor Assault Fighter ( IG-2000 ) - bounty hunter IG-88; first droid pilot

Large size (maybe...the Imps already lead the "Large" category 2 to 1)
GAT-12 Skipray Blastboat - used by smugglers and the Empire. A multi-crew type affair.

Rebel
Small size
Z-95 Headhunter - cheap

Large size
YT-2400 ( Outrider ) - smugglers, etc

Other?
Some kind of "Senator's Shuttle" type ship?
ARC-170 - according to the background, it is technically still around in the Rebellion era
Alpha-3 V-Wing - another supposedly still-in-use during the Rebellion era design
Eta-2 Actis interceptor - another supposedly still-in-use during the Rebellion era design
Delta-7 Aethersprite interceptor - another supposedly still-in-use during the Rebellion era design

It appears to me that the Rebels are starved for ships soon, unless they start to dip into the Prequel type vessels.

Huge size

It should be noted that both the CR90 Corellian Corvette and the Gallofree Yards GR-75 Medium Transport saw use by both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. Hopefully they'll have cards for use by both factions (particularly the CR90).

Don't forget the kirahxz fighter (I can't remember the spelling). It's shown in the card art in wave 3 and is represented by the dark side in the LCG

Based on the dearth (not Darth :) ) of remaining Rebel type ships, I suppose Wave 4 will be the last of this "Rebellion Era" go 'round, with the exception of some re-paints and whatnot.

I would think we'd need to see the elusive Jek Tono Porkins*, Derek "Hobbie" Klivian and Wes Janson* somewhere amid all the Huge ships and/or probable Rebel Aces packs.

*these two (at least) are included with the GR-75, along with two more X-Wing pilots...maybe Hobbie and Zev Senesca.

"Echo base, this is Rogue Two. I've found them. Repeat, I've found them." --Zev Senesca

That was used exclusively by Black Sun, as far as I can see.

I don't think they'll release a third faction, but I could be wrong, of course.

My strange guess about wave 4 is that all previous guesses will turn out not to be that strange. I make no garuntee of the accuracy of all prior guesses.

Well the Rebels also used during the Civil War the

A-24 Sleuth Scout, which was a 20m blockade runner

R-41 Starchaser

Rihkxyrk assault fighter

Cutlass-9 patrol fighter

Belbullab-22 starfighter

and some Clone War ships that were salvaged

N-1 starfighter

ARC-170 Starfighter

Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighter

+ there will be a lot of freighters used by Smugglers

Seeing as how Slave-1 and Falcon are released as rebel / imperial - I can easily see more "pirate faction" ships as "imperial"

While I wouldn't exactly classify any of those as "non-Prequel & iconic", I also was completely surprised by the HWK-290 release. I had never heard of that ship before.

Certainly if they open the line up to include Prequel ships they will have a lot more to do.

My snobbish SW history is mostly from the RPGs and major novels (big nod to WEG, decent nod to WotC; not into the current FFG fare). For novels its mostly Stackpole & Zahn, avoiding the excesses of Kevin J. Anderson, most of the comics and Nickelodeon cartoons, and really silly things like Yuuzhan Vong.

But I think when it comes to a lot of the Tie varients I wouldn't call them Iconic. The Defender definitely but The Hunter, The Aggressor etc, they are cool but I definitely wouldn't say iconic.

You also have things like the Raven's Claw but I don't know how well that would differentiate from the HWK-290
