After 8 weeks of waiting I finally received my $37.00 mat from Hotz Artworks. What a waste of money. It's an un-squared, cheap piece of felt with some spray paint on it. I could have done this myself for a lot cheaper than $37.00.
Seriously disappointed and irritated that I wasted my money on this. I feel ripped off.
Hotz Artworks Mat
Yeah I'm sorry man, that is terrible.
Say what you will, the GF9 mats look nice (most of them), are nice durable vinyl, are $40, and you don't have to wait two months to get them. Oh and they're the proper size. You, clearly, did
not
get what you paid for. Sympathies.
Yuck. If it makes you feel any better, I really appreciate your posting about it. Others can learn from your negative experience (myself included).
I am really glad I stuck with the GF9 ones, they appear to be MUCH higher quality.
Had heard they were having issues with getting them out, but had not heard of the low quality. Will stay away for sure
TY for posting this, as has been said, will help a lot of people.
Thanks for letting us know. That kind of decides me for the GF9. Sorry you got burned.
That is absolute crap. I would be tempted to file a stop/retrieve payment request depending on who you paid through. That clearly is not what was advertised.
When compared to the GF9 mats for $3 more, then it really is appalling.
Sorry to see you got the shaft mate.
If you haven't already, contact them and get your money back.. a 2 month wait and then a subpar product.. not good..
I most definitely posted this to inform as many people as possible. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pissed though. I wasn't expecting the almighty glorious mat of mats but this is ridiculous. I won't burn any more energy on Hotz and as much as I can justify spending $37.00 on a great many other things, i'll chalk this up to an experience expense.
My REAL gripe is that Hudsonrunabypass put his eBay mats up 24 hours after I made my purchase with Hotz and I was soooo tempted to cancel my payment and order Hudson's through eBay. But after thinking about it, I wanted to see what Hotz would send out. After all, he makes platform mats and scenes for a living...
TL:DR
Do NOT buy from Hotz Artworks.
Yep, I would definitely not buy from him after this. That is ridiculous, and to be honest I would demand a refund.
I've seen others complain about Hotz before. Same problems. They paid extra to get theirs delivered rolled instead of folded. They arrived folded with no explanation or refund.
Its been 7 weeks and I am not expecting a good product now. I feel ripped off too. I did not know that these mats were felt. That's cheaper than all hell.
The felt he used with mine is extremely loose and nappy. I would have used the tighter felt. I'll be catching corners of baseplates if i use this mat. Guaranteed.
This piece of junk isn't going point five past any speed.
That's pretty bad. A couple of cans of spray paint and 3'x3' piece of MDF and you can make one so much better. That said Hudsonrunabypass has some of the best one's I've seen yet. People doing it themselves seem to take more pride in their work so I'll pay the extra in shipping to get them to Canada.
I've got one of the same mats and mine is great. I really like it. The playspace is the right size, the painting work is much better than I could do myself. It did take a little while to get here, but I'm still waiting for my Wave 3 stuff, so comparatively, it was really quick! The felt is great to play on, too, because the ships don't slip at all.
I feel your pain . . .
That work is inexcusable, and to wait that long for it? I just made my own from felt, and it's definitely a higher quality than what you received.
I seem to remember once I made a comment in another Hotz complaint thread that any company that uses the outdated 90's thing of misspelling words deliberately and replacing the "s" with a "z" sends up about a dozen red flags in my mind. It absolutely sends a message of "irresponsible, uncouth, and unprofessional".
I too feel your you, I personally plucked some "starry-sky-images" off the net and went to a local banner maker, the cost me about 20 euro's and are the right size.
thanks for the heads up!

Except that the guy's name is Eric Hotz.
I've dealt with Eric Hotz several times, all the products I received were quality pieces and better than the alternatives. He sells felt mats that have been airbrushed, don't expect non-fabric map. If the piece is sub-standard or you are unhappy for any other reason, I'd suggest contacting him. I don't know the guy but over a few different transactions, I received good service.
Hotz mat:
Another Hotz:
I can tell from those pictures that he didn't use the same felt for mine. What I got was loose knap felt and a sh*tty paint job. If he wasn't on the entire opposite side of the continent from me i'd put in the energy to take this further than the wonderful internet burn. He does this "professionally" so i'd expect something better than what I got.
Why does that shuttle have a shuttlecock coming out of it's arse?
Good point. WTF is that?
Except that the guy's name is Eric Hotz.
Doesn't change the fact that it sounds unprofessional.
Why does that shuttle have a shuttlecock coming out of it's arse?
Because the Empire is a funny old raquet.
...I'll get me coat...
Looks like you served up a good one and netted a few laughs. lol
