Use the Force Challenge

By SableGryphon, in X-Wing

Most of us are here because we enjoy the game. There's a lot to love. The hours of trying to find just the right list, the challenge of anticipating the enemy and moving your ships in just the right way, and the thrill of a game changing dice roll. However, I've notice a lot of us tend to find one ship or list and use that to the exclusion of others. I'm guilty of this myself (yay shuttles). So, to change things up, I propose a challenge for your next game.

If you have many expansions, you've got a healthy list of pilot cards. Take all the Rebel or Imperial pilot cards you have. Remove all duplicates of unique pilots leaving you with only one of each in the deck. Shuffle these cards. Draw two cards. Now, the challenge is to build a list using these two pilots. Now, play this list and report the results.

Hard Mode: Don't stop at two pilots. Draw one pilot at a time. These are the only ships you are allowed. You may stop at any time to add upgrades. If you break 100, discard the last pilot you drew.

Edit: Clarified Unique Pilot rule.

Hello,

For those who wants to try that, you can use The Squadrons Generator in random mode :

By clicking on the extension images, you can refine the selection of the cards you want to use and in this case removes all the unique pilots easily before launching the generation.

bye.

I almosy exclusively use A Wings because I love their maneuverability.

I really need to try other ships. Challenge accepted.

I actually want to do something like this for a Draft tournament, using rules like from Magic the Gathering or Heartstone's Arena mode for the actual distribution.

I had considered this too for a booster draft. This would work best when run by a game store of course. You start off with a deck of all the pilots. Shuffle this deck. Each player gets to draw one card. They then get a copy of the expansion containing that pilot (entry fee for the draft should cover the cost of this expansion). The rest of their list is on them. The pilot they drew must be in their list.

Behind the scenes, the tournament runner can choose to not include certain ships (if they don't have them in stock for example), and may also include large ships (Good news, you get a shuttle for less than the retail cost of a shuttle. Bad news, you have to fly a shuttle in a tournament). This is a fairly basic version. You could come up with far more complex variants I'm sure. :)
