FINALLY got to play this game!

By markcsoul, in X-Wing Battle Reports

So a little background first. I've owned this game since early spring, have bought all the "starfighter" expansion packs over time as well. However up until this past week I never had played this game, due to wife having no interest, and no real close by friends or family (assuming they'd have interest anyways).

Well last week I got lucky twice. I discovered the online version on Vassal, and also found a game store about half an hour away that plays every Saturday.

So between the two I have no been able to play 4 games online, and 3 games "live".

I've gone 1-2-1 online, with the draw being from a guy who stalled out from being gone too long getting food. Then I went 2-1 with the real game.

I've played 5 games as rebel, and 1 as imperial. My one rebel squad went 2-0 against two different imperial squads by the same player when I played live, so at the moment it's my best squad.

It is:

Arvyl Crynd

Dagger Squadron Pilot

Biggs Darklighter - R2-F2

Gray Squadron Pilot - Ion Cannon Turret

100 points total

The first game he focused on taking out my A-wing which he eventually did, but I didn't lose any other ships (although two were down to one hull point). My y-wing gave him a lot of grief as I got several successful ion attacks pulled off.

The second game he focused on the Y-wing and got him destroyed pretty quickly, but again I lost no other ships. In fact he barely damaged my other 3.

It's definitely more fun to play in person, and a bit easier to follow than online. I hope I can play regularly now and really learn all the little nuances of the game.

I think I'd trade in the upgrades for

Arvyl Crynd
Ibtisam
Garven Dreis
"Dutch" Vander

[100 total]

All of them are Level 6. All of them are stupidly good. And you get the GarVander combo!

welcome to the addiction. i love this game. its customizability sets it apart and makes its replay huge, almost limitless once u get enough ships to vary squad building options :)

Arvel is actually a terrible pilot, objectively speaking (and I say this as someone who loves the A-Wing and really wants to like him) but if you're having success with him that's awesome. He doesn't get much love in this game.

I agree Arvel isn't so great. Only time I saw him work was blocking Han at an angle with Golds circling with ion cannons. That was kinda cool although pretty narrow.

He's got a cool ability, don't get me wrong. The problem is, he's only good for blocking high level named pilots, which is awfully specific. If A-Wings had access to Advanced Sensors, and he could focus or evade and then crash into you, he would be pretty sweet. But the fact that he has to crash into anything below ps6, which is most ships these days, it seems like, and then is parked right in front of that ship's friends, with no action, is a recipe for bad times.

If you could boost into an enemy Arvel would be amazing... because he can't, he's not.

Why can't he boost into an enemy? I mean he could move, come up short, then boost into them as his action.

That's not really the problem with him, unless I'm misunderstanding you. The problem with him is that he can't do a pre-action like Advanced Sensors would allow, then throw himself into a target.

Rules specifically prohibit boosts or barrel rolls that would cause you to overlap another ship's base.

He could eat lambda for lunch.

Gotcha. Would still be a tremendous help being able to focus or TL or evade before slamming him into them tho.
