I'm thinking about picking up one of the Gale Force mats. Either the Crimson Gas Cloud, Fiery Nebula, or the new Frozen Planet mat.

Anyone have a personal preference? I've played on the Crimson Gas Cloud, and I certainly liked it, but I'm intrigued by the other 2.

I like the color of the Fiery Nebula but wondering how bright/distracting it is on the table.

I wasn't as excited about the new Frozen Planet mat but after seeing it in this thread , I'm liking it more.

I really like the look of the crimson gas cloud and ordered 2 copies through the GF9 site. Two weeks later, I was informed that the mats were out of stock. That was a month ago. I have no idea what my order status is, so maybe order your mats some other way.

Frozen Planet is my favorite but the Crimson Gas Cloud is a close second. I own all 3. I like the Fiery Nebula one as well, but feel the other two are just a bit less busy/distracting and distinguish themselves over it.

Yes, that one is terrible for so many reasons.

Through a combination of prize winnings, completionist mania, and wanting enough for running events, I actually own all four.

Crimson and Frozen are both great, and tend to alternate for my primary choice.

The Fiery Nebula isn't painful to look at, but it's easy to lose asteroids on the brighter surface.

The Battlestation mat is very busy. I don't think it's as bad as some - five minutes in, the surface just fades for me either way. But it is my least favorite. I tend to pull it out for demos - it's great for getting attention across a room, and very thematic for Luke/Vader dueling over the Death Star.

I have bought the Fiery Neb, Frozen Planet, and the Asteroid. If you play with Asteroids a lot I would recommend that one. It gives a nice background feel that enhances the Asteroid field. I like the Crimson Gas one but couldn't find it at the time. I love the Frozen Planet...probably my fav out of the GF9 Mats.

Which is part of why it works for demos - no asteroids

I loved the look of the Death Star one online, but for actual play it isn't that great. I don't mind the colors, but asteroids look really funny on it. If you play with no terrain, or have some other suitable counter than an asteroid, it would be fine, though.

Edit - anyone know of any printed / downloadable terrain for this map? I am thinking broken / unbroken satellites would be OK, but rather than re-create the wheel, it would be better if someone else already did the layout work.

It's the reason we only used it once. They want asteroids, so we use the star field maps.

I find I hit less things without asteroids, though

Frozen planet is my favourite not only does it look good but it is the only one I have managed to win games on so far! That is then followed by fiery nebula. Haven't bought Death Star mat and have no desire to do so, three are good for me.

Is that the Death Star Mat turned over, because yeah that does improve it. I know a lot of people that prefer the Hoth side.
