Navigator on a shuttle?

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

So,

I have been looking at the shuttle and have played it quite a bit, with some success. (It really is a good ship played right)

I am really beginning to think that Advanced Systems, Engine Upgrade, Navigator and Rebel Captive may be a great combo.

Advanced Systems gives you great flexibility (discussed to death), Engine upgrade makes those turns a lot better (discussed to death).

Rebel Captive makes shooting at the shuttle painful, possibly enough to make it possible for you to turn your shuttle around whilst that ship is stressed. (This is especially good against rebel ships most of which are a bit minimalist on green maneuvers.)

Now, Navigator allows you to change the dial, this may just add that extra maneuverability along with AS and Eng. Upgrade. Alone, I don't see it working, but in this config, it could be pretty handy. You could avoid a collision, set up a collision get out of a fire arc or get your arc on target.

What are peoples thoughts. It makes an Omicron 34 pts, but I think it makes it a very useful Omicron. I wouldn't use it with Yorr, but Jendon might benefit.

Run with a BH and a couple of Ties this might give some nice options.

I'm not a fan of the navigator on the Omicron Group Pilot. Piloting skill 2, with a good chance of having initiative, means that you will often be moving before the field has changed. The shuttle dial has very limited options to change to, since navigator can only change to moves on the same baring. It's much more powerful on the higher piloting skill pilots, like Kagi, since that's when you have the biggest chance to have someone foul your planned move. Even then, which such a big base and limited options, it's not a great option on the shuttle compared to the other fun options to put on.

Better to use those points on something that's even more likely to help you, such as ion cannon or ST-321

The upgrades on that shuttle cost almost as much as the shuttle itself.

The question to ask is not, "If I put enough upgrades on it will it become good?" but "is this shuttle worth aproximately three Academy Pilots?"

for 34 points it better be pretty awesome, not just good.

I can see how it would work with Kagi and having the Rebel captive makes for an interesting dilemma with him.

More thought and an actual flight test later this week.
