So what do you play on?

By Ataraxianj, in X-Wing

I have been playing on a few different table tops for variety, what do you guys like to use? Let's see some pictures!!!

My Short Board that I leave at the girlfriend's place (2 foam core sheets with black construction paper tops and silver and gold marker for stars)

and my first mat, a cloth nebula:

I got a couple of yards of black fleece. Way cheaper than any mats I have seen for sale, and the soft surface helps things not get bumped.

I play on a starfield made from black felt and white paint markers.

I have been testing a play mat for Applied Perspective for a while (about 6 months really). You can see it as the backdrop in these pictures:

It's got a nice surface, a little rough, enough so that things don't slide, but not too much. It's been totally abused (the whole point of testing it) over 6 months of playtesting it. It doesn't show the slightest wear on the top. There are a couple of small stains on the the bottom, illustrating how bad we have abused it.

The mat is not for sale yet, but should be soon.

Those maps look awesome, good job guys.

Hex is, is that map felt?

I was thinking about ordering templates from that company. I may wait now to order the map at the same time.

I just use a 3x3 foot piece of black felt, got it for 5 bucks at Michaels.

I play on a 5th of bourbon.

wait... what?

On a side note, it's hitting the 2 month marker since i ordered and paid for my Hotz Matz mat. This thing better be the nicest mat i've ever seen....

On a spray painted MDF 4X4 board. Just sprayed on the back of a Warmachine board with whatever cans of paint I had on hand.

I later donated a similar 3X3 table to a local gaming club to encourage the scene.

No, it's some sort of vinyl (I think). It's vinyl like. I'm not entirely sure on the material details really. I'm more an (ab)user than anything else. It's a good surface to play on, and is holding up super well. The close up image with the tokens looks a lil grainy/noisy, but that's more the source image than the material or printing quality.

I made a table topper out of MDF and felt, works pretty nicely and the flat black background makes the ships really stand out on their own.

I found a 36X42 inch folding display board at an office supply store it is white on 1 side and is dark blue on the other, neat and easy to fold up and move.

so I'm poor and don't have a board or at yet, but I play on a billiards table. half for the playing area & half for the tokens, templates, etc. it works.

Usually a 4x6 Hotz mat

Hey doublenot, some nice looking gear, where did you get the blockade runner from?

Got 2 new vinyl matts. Here is one of them after I trimmed it to the right size.

very nice

I went to the thrift store to find a black sheet or blanket. Score! I found a square black felt travel blanket that rolls up, closes with velcro, and has a carrying handle. White paint flecks for stars, presto!

found another cheap mat today at Micheal's its a craft store..
the mat is made by "Creatology" "Foam Roll" 36"x60" black. cost 8 bucks!!
Pros- its cheap! grippy surface, solid black, smooth texture, will take paint, maybe even print, doesn't bunch up or slide around and is very light weight!! rolls up
Cons was tightly rolled up and has some "memory". (meaning it wants to slightly roll back up) easy fix was to place two trim pieces of scrap wood on each end. (trim wood is cheap and you can get it in many different configurations/sizes) I trimmed mine to 36"x48" so i could have a staging area at each end. I am planning on painting the trim wood on each end black and affixing some kind of Rebel design/decal on it and doing an Imperial one on the other side. will post pics when i am done messing with it.. Currently have a bigger more important project!! Building a cabinet for an Xbox one to fit under the TV!!! (Surprise Christmas present for my Daughter)... Not like i am going to use it..lol
So far this is my favorite cheap mat.. still waiting for somebody to make basically a giant 36"x48" mouse pad to play on!!

Made a custom designed pvc banner. (120cm x 90cm)

Just to throw in my 2 cents, I ordered a hex map with 2 inch hexagons. I’m going to try the game without the distance templates.
