Small ship pegs broken off and stuck in model... ideas?

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

I had a 2nd peg break on me tonight, first was a Y-Wing around a month ago, the second was a HWK tonight. The peg is firmly stuck in the bottom of the model, and it's not coming out.

My temporary solution for the Y-Wing was just to glue the broken peg permanently to the model, because doing so did not cause it to take up any additional space in my foam storage. The HWK however is stored vertically in my foam.

Anyone had this happen, and if so, what is your suggestion? I can't use the model without either:

1) gluing the broken peg to the model's base

2) contacting FFG and having them send me an entirely new model and peg (I find it unlikely that they would even do this)

3) perform surgery on the model to remove the plastic peg from it's bottom, and replace with something else.

Suggestions welcome. Given that this is the 2nd piece to happen to me, I'm going to assume that it is a fairly common problem.

you heat a needle over a candle (using a pliers so as not to burn yourself) when hot you push this into the broken off part and let it dry when dried you then use the pliers and gently, using rotating movements turn the peg out...

I would just remove the stub under the ship and replace it with a small 2 or 3 mm magnet and then set another on the broken peg. you can even drill into the ship a couple millimeters to inset the magnet. I have done this on a few, and will eventually do it for all of my ships.

very small drillbit

The peg has a flat so you won't be able to turn it out. You'll need to affix something to it and pull it straight out. A melting-cooling solution (like the needle mentioned above) would work for removing the plastic pin.

Got a link for the magnets you used?

You can use Rare Earth magnets, I got some from my LGS .. The Rodents method is very nice as well. I haven't had any issues with the standard pegs, but if it became a problem would go a similar route, either metal or plastic , probably plastic.
