Is there any reason to take Seismic Charges?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

I mean Proton bombs ignore shields, I really don't see the benefit of a seismic charge.

They basically both do the same thing, but one ignores shields, correct?

I don't use them, but this week I just bought a bomber and the slave. So I'm trying to gain perpective on the differences.

Thanks,

Different points cost?

At 2pts they are really nice. Especially if your up against Imperials that in general don't have shields.

Seismic charge gives one damage to everything within range 1. Definitely worth it if you drop it in an enemy formation. It's also good if you are being pursued. Just make sure that your own guys won't be within range 1 when it goes off!

Cheaper, thats been the biggest reason for taking it over proton bomb. Also an opponent is way more cognizant of you being able to deal a critical hit card to everyone at range 1 over just a damage. I've seen way more successful seismic charges than I have proton bombs because people have forgotten the opponent had it.

last game I toke 3 of them, and they caused 8 damage between them. So they were well worth the investment. 6pts for 8 damage, that's better value than a APT.

Dropping Bomb Question:

So when I drop a bomb, I can do any maneuver on my dial, but before I move I place the 1 behind me first and drop the bomb at that point. But with a Proximity mine, I have to move first and then pay an action to drop it, correct?

How you drop them is described on the card. with a Seismic Charge it's done when you reveal your dial, so you couldn't do it if ionized as you skip your Reveal Dial.

Ok. That's what I was wondering, He loves y-wings with Ion's. So i figured I will be ionzed, even though I'm a big ship. However, I could use the Promity mine even if I was Ion'ed, because it's during an action, correct?

Thanks

yep that should be fine, I think.

Great! Thanks Guys

You're right in that Proton Bombs are a direct upgrade to Seismic Charges, but Seismic Charges still have action-and-attack-free Damage that effects multiple ships, for less than half the cost of the Protons. I'd say they're still better than Assault Missiles :-)

My favorite part of Seismic Charges is having them on low piloting skill ships when your opponent forgets about them. His level of cursing when you announce you are droppng the charges gives a great indication of where he's about to move. :)

I think you get just as much cursing when he maneuvers behind you and you drop it directly on his ship and then speed away.

I find Proton Bombs are too expensive by 1 point.

So seismics are your friends. They are worth the 2 points

Seismic Charges - don't leave home without them.

Don't forget the ability to surprise your enemy by dropping a bomb when it will damage your own ship. I have frequently dropped a seismic charge where it would damage my own Firespray or Bomber in order to damage 2-4 other enemy ships. It's a good trade off. I would be hesitant to do that when I would be dealing myself a face-up damage card which might cripple my ship's effectiveness.

Think how much we like Assault Missiles. They opperate like that only you don't need to roll to hit.

One automatic damage is nothing to underestimate.

And as mentioned above 2 points is really cheap.

this weeks game gave me particular joy, when 2 were dropped in the same turn and took out a shieldless A-Wing.. good for our side, bad for the Rebels.. lol.. I love the bombs, they do add that moments hesitation for some, but better when dropped on the unsuspecting player. The jaw drop was particularly appreciated.. lol

Just watch the movies again and see how cool seismic bombs are (Episode II) and how crappy and useless the proton bombs were (Episode V) ;)

Or think this, one Proton bomb, can destroy an A-Wing, if the cards is the one with the legeng "This card counts as 2 Damage against your hull", the A-Wing have only two points in Hull, so it be destroyed by one single bomb, greettings.

The seismics also ignore shields, just its a face down damage

Seismic's do not ignore shields. Where did you get that from? But yes seismics are awesome as well as the proton bomb. Is the proton bomb expensive. Yes. Does it work. Fly right and youll get it off on two ships every time.

Yes, sorry, dont know what I was thinking.

Sleepy oops

Um yeah I wanna with his rules where 2 point charges ignore shields! sign me up!
