A+Advanced Squad building challenge

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

Build two competitive squads, one rebel and one imperial

  • 100pts per squad max
  • small fighters only (no large ships)
  • assume i have 4 of every ship (that includes tie-fighters!)
  • also assume I have 4 copies of each upgrade.

rebels

* must include at least one A-Wing who IS NOT a name pilot

imperials

* must include at least one Tie-Advanced that IS NOT Darth Vader

Good luck.

for rebels, that is very simple. In any normal 4 ship build, simply substitute a 21 point Rookie Xwing (or something similar) for a 22 points Green Awing + PTL

for imperials, i'm already thinking of a 4 ship Jonus squad where i replaced one (or more) TIE bombers with TIEadv to help with the dogfighting, So something like:

Jonus + squad leader

scimitar + 2 missiles/torps

scimitar + 2 missiles / torps

Tempest + missile

scimitar + 2 missiles is roughly the cost of tempest + 1 missile, so you can substitute the ships as well without too much problems.

My main squad prior to purchasing Falcon was:

Dutch (R5-K6, Ion) 30p.

Garven (R2 Astro) 26p.

Rookie 21p.

Prototype (Homing M.) 22p.

Getting Imperials is a bit trickier :P I think one day I'll try:

Jonus (Proton B., Squad Leader) 29

Tempest Sq. (Assault M.) 26

Scimitar Sq. (Proton T, Cluster M.) 24

Scimitar Sq. (Cluster M.) 20

Edit: Haha, I didn't read Duraham's answer before posting mine, guess we think alike :P

I've actually been thinking along these lines for a while now. I wish that the Imperials had a small ship with a co-pilot like the HWK-290, 'cause then I'd've used Maarek Steele, but I'm happy with what I've got :)

I recently started a thread based on this idea. The Hypermobile B-Wings with one getting an extra action from a Squad Leader is slightly insane, as you can essentially be wherever you want to be on the board. Nothing quite like the maneuverability you get from boosting and barrel rolling in the same turn, particularly when you can do either before your move. Additionally, with everyone else shooting for 3 dice at R2, the wimpy damage of the A-Wing is mitigated by the free focuses and/or target locks that he passes out to the heavier hitters.

Eeyup. 4x Tempest Squadron Pilots. The Tie Advanced is simply the most survivable small ship in the game. Giving it an Alpha Strike will mitigate its damage problems, and become one heck of a harassment fleet afterwards.

100 points

24 points
Red Squadron Pilot
R2 Astromech
22 points
Green Squadron Pilot
Push the Limit
30 points
Blue Squadron Pilot
Advanced Sensors, Autoblaster
24 points
Gold Squadron Pilot
R2 Astromech, Ion Cannon Turret

This one is great if you use the a wing to flank your opponent. If you maneuver carefully, you can draw off a few ships that try to destroy the awing quickly, while the rest of your squad does some damage. If the other player doesn't go for your a wing, use it to flank and harass your opponent.

Prototype pilot

Gold squadron pilot

Blue squadron pilot

Rookie pilot

Rookie pilot

Tempest squadron pilot with assault missiles

Black squadron pilot with squad leader

3 academy pilots

Alpha squadron pilot with stealth device

Easy!

Ran this at Gen Con and did well (it still baffles me that people hate A-Wings):

Wedge, Stealth Device, Expert Handling, R2.

Green Squadron, PtL, Concussion Missile

Green Squadron, PtL

Prototype

Imperial

Jonas, Homing Missile, PtL

Scimitar Squadron, Proton Torp

Tempest Squadron, Cluster Missile

Tempest Squadron, Cluster Missile

Tempest Squadrons screen the bombers. Initial volley is brutal - have wiped out a B-Wing, an X-Wing, and damaged a second B-Wing in the first volley.

Both in theme. Both have the named pilot of choice and 2 lesser pilots of the same "bad" ship. Each also plays the least played option of the 4th ship. Both are actually interesting squads and probably fun to fly against each other.

Rebel:

Tycho + ptl + concussion = 33

Green + PTL + concussion = 26

Prototype + cluster = 21

Rebel Op + blaster = 20

Imperial:

Vader + squad leader + concussion = 35

Tempest + concussion x2 = 50

Winged Gundark = 15

Cool challenge - I like it!

REBEL SQUAD

I am generally not a Rebel player, so this is just a stab at something I'd be interested in playing:

  • Dagger w/Adv Sensors x 2
  • Red Squadron X-Wing
  • Green Squadron A-Wing w/PTL

(99 PTS)

IMPERIAL SQUAD

  • Maarek Stele w/Marksmanship
  • Mauler Mithel w/Marksmanship
  • BSP w/Marksmanship x2
  • Winged Gundark

(99 PTS)

some cool ideas posted so far. thanks!

always interesting to see what other ppl would play with certain squad limitations.

Rebel wise, I'd go with the one that I've been playing. So far undefeated:

Biggs + R2D2 + Shield upgrade

Roark Garnet + Saboteur + Blaster Turret

Prototype + Concussion Missiles

Prototype + Concussion Missiles

100pts

Alternatively, swap out the saboteur and upgrade the missiles to homing or assault missiles.

I don't have an imperial suggestion yet.
