Kingdoms, Kings/Queens, Plots and Greyjoys. Oh Yes!

By ktom, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

LOL so we need to add to our cheap and inexpensive game 3x 30 USD plus maybe 50 for shipping every 6-12 months and now for 60 cards.... it's getting better and better.... As I said at the end this type of fix game is much more expensive in EVERY playing level... starting from beginners ending in profis

However I must admit that if it's true what they said that selling was increased I congratulate you and FFG. It proves that this direction was good.

I observe this game still having some cards for sell but I have no more bitterness and sorrow for FFG. Excuse me my very nervous posts in the past, have fun staying with AGOT and good luck :)

A tourney-competitive deck plays a lot of multiples, so this should still allow for a lot of deck-building variety. Though I haven't been playing a ton of LCG lately, my impression is that GJ is only lacking 10-15 core (non-unique) playable cards. If they get those here, people may be able to put together something competitive.

I'm not even sure it's that many. Assuming GJ gets similar basic resources to what other Houses got in their Core Decks, that goes a long way toward making GJ competitive. Being able to replace some of the neutral characters, etc. they'd currently have to use with in-House options might just be gravy for their competitiveness.

Although that does bring up a point - with 60 cards in the expansion, there might only be 1 copy of basic GJ resources (although if there are Kingdom locations, too...), so a GJ payer would need three copies in order to have a playset of, say, Fiefdoms. Or, there could be multiples of the resources (like there are in the Core Set decks), which would "dilute" the card count. Hmm. Not sure which way I'm rooting for on that!

Agreed. I haven't played LCG a lot recently so I was just guessing on numbers, but the more playable GJ cards, the more variety in deckbuilding players will ultimately have. I hope that there will be a sufficient number of "rush-style" cards and control-style cards, and as Ktom mentioned, basic resources would be good.

Anyone know when the actual release is supposed to be? I'm anxious to see more spoilers!

The article simply says it will be out in "July." Usually, when a Chapter Pack is set to be released in a particular month, it becomes "the last Tuesday of the month" So my guess is that it will be announced as "released" on July 28th (and hitting store shelves over the next 2-3 weeks). And that's assuming there are no delays.

Really, because lately it seems that FFG is actually hitting earlier release dates. They originally solicited Talisman: The Dungeon as a May release, and it will be out before the end of this month (FFG is sending it to distibutors sometime this week, according tot heir retailer email). Rufugees of War released just days after the spoiler article, and Scattered Armies wasn't even a month later -- virtually two weeks later, iirc. Those of us who have been around for years know that FFG has often had a problem hitting their release dates, but I have seen a dramatic turn around in this over the past six months (after the whole Core Set/COC delay snafu). WE'll have to see.

I think the price is about right if you look at it from an LCG point of view. I would say its a bit low on cards tho. I'd want at least another $20 cards, but what are you gonna do? I'm leaning more towards the side of this pushing GJ back into competative. Although again, I'd have to say there's still only gonna be one competative decktype with a few cards differing here or there between decks. Still, a HUGE step in the right direction. Kudos, FFG. Now lets see if it gets here on time. Its encouraging to hear they've been getting better about release dates.

and finally they find a way how to get more money... like Konami, which is not bad until community is happy and it is:)... soon we get another martell expansion again 120 $ for whole playset and another one maybe legacy set or reprint set or whateva... Right way to go because until there are money behind we can hope that product will be still in development.

Last time I checked, a play set is 3 of each card. That's only $90. And, quite frankly, if someone is going to order 3 Greyjor or Martell or Core Sets from me, I am going to cut them a deal.

Plus, now you're looking at the guy who's fanatical about Martell. I'd pay $30 just for the house card, and call all the cards gravy.

On a separate note, does anyone think that we might see Pyromancer's Cache get unbanned after every house gets a king and queen? I'd like to see it added back into the card pool, even if Lanni does get them at a cheaper price. I never had any problem playing them at 3 gold, and they were some of the best card draw in the format.

So, was that the only real reason it was banned from LCG in the first place, not enough houses had Kings/Queens to make "fair"? Because I'd also really like seeing it back in the environment, we really need reliable card draw! I'm not even sure I'd be that upset if Jaqen wasn't banned anymore either.

If (as promised) there is a little more reliable location control for each House in Kings of the Sea, I would have no problem seeing it restored. i felt that in the limited LCG format, it was pretty much an automatic and very safe play - that potentially unbalanced Lannister even further. I always allowed it in Standard tournmaents, and if the LCG envrionment is actually getting better balance, I think it should come back.

And let's face it -- if it wasn't banned for at least the Storylines League, everyone would have bought the War of the Five Kings CP just to get three of them. It's that good.

So, back to the previous posts about which plots are coming in the Greyjoy expansion. Let's assume we get 2 Military Battle plots, 2 Intrigue Gambit plots, and 2 Military Battle plots. Let's also assume that these plots are reprints from 5KE. Which plots, for Nedliness and playability, would you want included?

I love the win-a-challenge-to-search mechanic, so I'd like to see Battle of Blackwater Bay and The Swearing of Oaths come back.

I thought Frey Hospitality was a perfectly executed plot, and I love the artwork and theme behind An Empty Throne. Scouting the Pass also made intrigue challenges especially dangerous, although it might be overpowered with only Lannister being a powerful intrigue-challenge house. Rout of the Riverlords is great for Stark and Baratheon with multiple challenges, and makes you consider whether its worth overplaying your hand that round...

Anyone else?

Well, if this is also supposed to be a Greyjoy "core" deck, I could see Defending the Fist as a Military Battle plot in support of the "unopposed" theme I've previously assumed from the Balon they've shown. Free For All could be an Intrigue Gambit plot supporting a form of the location control (though not discard, unfortunately) the announcement seems to indicate. And if there are going to be a bunch of Kind and Queens in the expansion, Stay of Execution as a Power Struggle seems to be a natural compliment.

Those would be my guesses based on the themes discussed in the announcement.

I don´t think we´ll see Defending the Fist as a Military Battle plot anytime soon in a playformat that supports mainly melee games, this seems to be a bad move to me. Remember that from the actual wording the effect would apply to all players and charachters for the whole round. How easy can melee farming really become if the consequence for defending a challenge means losing 1+X of your defenders?

I would bet (and i hope) that we´ll see a reprint of the search plots and all the plots which don´t effect every player in such a game changing manner like defending the fist would do.

But because of the Melee focus, I wouldn't be surprised if we DO see the plots that affect all "players," particularly over the search plots (everyone has noticed that in the LCG, search has become very rare, complicated and/or almost never one-sided, right?).

Well that was one of the good things about the 5KE search plots, their search effect is one-sided, but the whole process is interactive because your opponent can hinder the effect if they manage to win all challenges with the named challenge type against you. I think that´s pretty fast forward if you compare it to a lot of other search plots, it also helps joust and melee decks.

Back to the plots that bear an all player theme. I can see that reprinting "Battle of Oxcross" would be a good thing, but it shudders me when i think about a reprint of, say "Steel on steel". I think both plot cards show how things can be done right (battle of Oxcross) and wrong (steel on steel) for a melee game with plots that effect every player. I wish we´ll see more plots like battle of oxcross.

Defedning the Fist continues to be a staple for me in my Greyjoy melee deck> i would applaud a reprint for the LCG format.
