Target lock and other stuff...

By AussieJedi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I just finished up a game and was wondering if I could get some clarification on rules:

If I lock onto a target, and I dont expend the option to use the lock in the same turn, when I go into the next turn (the lock is still on the tie, right) am I able to utilise a different action, say a focus. My opponent felt then that was way too advantageous for the rebel player due to all of the bonus to the attack roll.

I caused a damage on a tie and the card came up as reducing the skill to "0", so does this mean he moves first and then shoots last, or because he has 0 skill he cannot do anything for the turn or remainder of game?

I hope the question was worded clear enough for you to understand :)

Thanks

Target Locks stay on and you can do a different action (or simply re-acquire the lock on a different ship) the following turn(s).

If you PS is 0, you move first and shoot last, thats it.

Too advantageous? That's kind of the point, lol. Don't make it easy for your opponent to TL and focus on you ;)

Welcome to the Light Side of the Force. :D

We have shields and target locks.

Yes, the target lock stays, and so you can choose another action, such as focus. Yes, this is advantageous, but it is the basic strategy of the game, especially as a rebel player. It's often called action stacking. But it either takes two turns to set up (leaving you with one unbuffed attack in the mean time), or else paying for some sort of upgrade or pilot ability that allows you the TL+Focus in the same round. So it's an advantage, but not an unfair one.

And there are strategies to counter it as well. Remember that if you overlap another ship with your ship's base in its final position, you skip your perform action step. Likewise if your ship or the maneuver template crosses an asteroid. So they can "block" you, or Ion you onto an asteroid, for action denial.

Also, you normally have to spend the target lock to fire a torpedo or missile, so you don't get the re-roll with it (exception: homing missiles).

That needs to be made into a T-shirt. Best part is even most SW geaks wouldn't get it. :)

Yeah this is the cost that balances out how nice keeping the TL can be. For rebel fighters, when using a secondary weapon like torpedos, the TL+Focus is pretty much considered to be a requirement. Otherwise you've most likely wasted those points.

But not only do Rebel ships pay for the TL by having to give up an action, they have to pay the points for it as well. Rebel ships cost more points then Imperial ships.

I would totally buy that shirt - especially if instead of SAYING Shields and Target Locks it just had their icons. =^D

Also, most experienced Imperial players know that the Rebels rely on those tools - especially, as was said, with secondaries - and so they come up with tactics to lessen their effectiveness. Rushing from range 3 to range 1 on someone who has a torpedo, for example, so that he can't launch it, or zooming in to block him so that not only are they too close, but he hits them and loses an action.

I was in a mirror match at Worlds and my opponent flanked me in an A-Wing while I was tangling with his B-Wings, and used Jan Ors to launch a 5 dice Assault Missile at me, who had four 1-agility B-Wings all in a nice cluster for him. He rushed his shot, though, and launched the same turn he target locked, without taking a turn to focus it as well - he was afraid of overshooting into range 1, because he wasn't an experienced A-Wing pilot.

Five dice, comes up a crit, 2 focus, 2 blank. He couldn't reroll, because he spent the TL to fire the missile. And he couldn't spend a focus, because he didn't get time to take one. So one crit. I rolled 1 defense die, got a focus, had a focus, and evaded it. Didn't hit anything, let alone splash and hit my whole squad.

The blessing and curse of a Target Lock is that it's STILL much, much more effective if you're able to combine it with a focus as well. And only having one or the other can bite you.

<_<

I'm so going to have to look into making a shirt like this. If I can swing it, I will make up a couple extra and get one to you and perhaps some others who hang out at the FFG event center.

I'm thinking...

Come to the Light Side, we have

LT+F and Shields.

But as you said using the icons not the words.

Heh I would absolutely buy a shirt like that off you.

You come in from Wisconsin, right?

You come in from Wisconsin, right?

Yep, not quite an hour away from the event center.

I'll look into it, have a friend who's a good artist, so he could do the design work. If the price isn't too bad I'll let you know what it will be and we can go from there.

Were you at Worlds? I thought I heard someone at a nearby table talking about having come in from Wisconsin and wondered if it was you but I was in the middle of a match or whatever and didn't get a chance to locate the person in question and ask.

**** it.

Now I want that shirt.

I would buy one too.

Were you at Worlds?

No. The 5th was my wife's birthday and the 6th was our 25th wedding anniversary.... So that weekend was pretty much spoken for.
