Official Campaign thread.

By RedFive, in X-Wing

Okay RedFive back in the cockpit.

are you ready for this?

we have all ben playing 100 pt force on force, playtesting for tournoments even expanding to 150 for epic dog fight style game play.

i am about to turn you on your ear...

this is how i will be running a continious and ongoing campaign.

we have 6 missions. in the rules it states that each mission is best played with 100 pts., so with that said...

each faction will get 600 pts. total. once your list is set, thats all the reasources that you will get for the entire campaign.

you will use your 600 pts to play each mission. no mission can have more then 150 pts on the table per faction. if a ship is destroyed, it is removed from your roster for the rest of the campaign.

unique pilots and upgrades are just that. unique. there is to be only one per 600 pts.

there will be a special rule at the end of each mission, where the winner will get a battlefield salvage roll. this will allow you to replenish forces on a small fractional scale. you will only get a percentage of the points lost back.

if any ship flys off the star field, it counts as destroyed for the purposes of mission objectives / game state, but will be allowed to rondevous up with the rest of the battle fleet. any ship that flys off the field will not be able to participate in the next sequential mission, but can return to the list after its conclusion.

so this is the challenge.... lets see which faction has what it takes to show thier superiority and firepower. who shall rule the galaxy?

so take this to your play groups, keep track of battle reports, take pictures of epic fights and post them here in this thread.

on Dec. 31st, hopefully we will all have had our play groups have a chance to run through this, we can add up all of our accumulated expereinces and share them here in this thread.

i will see if i can get some kind of sponsors, or donations so that maybe we can have a few gifts / swag / prizes for participating. ill make more announcments as the ideas come to me...

if anyone sees any initial flaws in this lets get it out of the way fast so that we can get the campaign started officially on Dec. 1st.

look forward to seeing what hits the table!

take pics! and more pics!

there is no try....do or do not.

Unless you allow ship proxies (which I'd prefer not to do), the later rounds could get messy, since your battle fleet list might not match your miniatures collection. For example, on the final mission you might have nothing but a bunch of A-Wings left in your fleet, but only a couple of A-Wing miniatures. What's worse is that your opponent might be in the same situation, and your final battle will be a War of the Dregs.

This could work better with a simple regimented escalation, without having to select 600 points of stuff to start with. Something like:

Mission 1: 110pts
Mission 2: 120pts
Mission 3: 130pts
Mission 4: 140pts
Mission 5: 150pts
Mission 6: 160pts

Just assume that a Rebel player has the entire Rebel fleet to draw from. The usual squad-building rules. Unique cards are permanently removed from the campaign.

As a side effect, I think you're going to see unique pilots drawing a lot of fire, and Draw Their Fire will become popular. That's a significant shift in motivation from one-off 100pt dogfight conditions, so you might want to give unique pilots a little something, such as the ability to re-roll 1 die per mission (which would reward players for putting unique pilots in rather than leaving them out because they're big fat targets).

I don't think any other special rules are necessary. Flying off the map should destroy the ship as usual, otherwise it's open to abuse (gosh I must've midjudged Wedge's movement there, it's just a coincidence that he's got 1 Hull left lololol). No salvage rolls. No book-keeping other than win-loss-draw.

i set this for entire play groups... if you cannot fill lists that you create, hopefully you have other players who CAN fill in the blanks. this is meant to be done as a group effort in your area, and not done by yourself.

could you do it by yourself? sure i suppose ya could...

but why would you, this game is a social game, so bring the idea to your entire play group and see who is on board. tell your play group that the fate of the galaxy could result from your efforts! how your faction fares with your play group might be totally different from someone else playgroup so on and so fourth....once we can compile all of the results here, we will then announce which side came out victorious....Imperial dogs or rebel scum.

this all dependent on your level of participation.

1 you could try this out and not post a word about it, then no one will know the results from your play group/ area.

2 you can try this out and post up all your pictures, battle reports, lists so on and so fourth and have a really great time doing so.

i would love to see everyone doing the latter.

ill be keeping track for Oregon and PACNW.

if you plan on participating, make it known what area and play group you represent and i will adjust the rosters in the OP.

as for the flying off the starfield, the ship still counts as destroyed for the purposes of scoring, also the negative effect is that his time spent rondevouing up with the rest of the fleet means he cannot participate in the next mission battle...

so your wedge with 1 hull point left who is purposely flown off the board, might be a very good tactical decision. sure you save wedge for the campaign, but you have lost him in the current mission, and he is not available for the next one also...

so how you manage your resources will be very important over the entire campaign....so if you put wedge in a tough spot in the first mission of the campaign and you loose him...well is that something you can afford to do? that decision is up to you!

You didn't mention anything about team play in your first post, but I see now.

sorry for the confusion. i am encouraging your playgroups to split up equally between factions. so lets say for the sake of ease, your play group has 6 interested players.

3 rebels

3 imperials

both sides get 600 pts. , so each player would be responsible for approximately 200 pts of list., that is one way to split it.

i however have another suggestion.

read over all 6 missions. see what the requirements for victory are from mission to mission? what forces will you need available to achieve victory for that mission. can you do it with 150 points or less? now calculate your resources.

split the 600 pts into blocks of tie squads, support squads, named pilots to place into said squads, upgrades... so on and so fourth.

i believe that if you eval the missions this way before you write your lists, you will get the best bang for your buck. remember if you only get 150 points total per mission and you have three players, that means each player can control up to 50 pts worth of ships in that battle. this makes all 6 missions playable by everyone in your play group at one sitting....so night one you tackle mission 1, then so on and so fourth.

i hope this is appealing to alot of different play groups and we can get a huge participation base going.... i am sure the more people who show interest will be appealing to some sponsors who will have people intrested in thier products through prize support and or sponsorship....maybe FFG will even throw in the hat for some swag or prize support for this should we make this popular and get alot of comments views and support.

thanks alot guys!

someone brought up a interesting point.

make sure that in order to keep uniqueness, do not have Vader's pilot card and also have the Darth Vader upgrade card on the same list of 600 pts. pick one or the other....do you want him in the fight or as a passenger. you cannot have both.

resume.

I guess that rule carries over for Luke and Chewie as well?

couldn't you use them both, just not in the same mission?

have Vaders TA on the list and have him lurking in a shuttle, but if one is destroyed remove the other from your list too.

that's interesting...

as long as both are not on the table i guess having both in your lists are ok....but i will be running my campaign as a purist.... so i will be adhering to a more stringent list, but that is just me.

bring it up to your play groups....different groups will have different values and ideas about how they want to run the campaign.

i want this to be fun and get as much participation as possible!

I agree with the first reply's concerns about your final battle: At that point, you very well may just have leftover ships. In addition, it's kind of boring and non-cinematic to off Vader, Wedge, and the various heroes.

Here are some campaign rules I've tinkered around with that may be helpful:

1.) When Unique pilots are destroyed they are considered injured or damaged, but not dead. They cannot take place in the next mission, but will return afterwards. Think of Vader getting blasted by Han at the end of A New Hope.

I would also allow pilots who flee to take part in the next battle; it's not as if they have to go to Dagobah to study before returning.

2.) Offer objectives that can replenish the fleet. In my campaign, we're fighting over a star system filled with bases, fueling stations, and airfields. Taking objectives of this sort allows you to add 10, 15, or 25 points to the over all list.

3.) To add an additional tactical element, have multiple missions occur simultaneously. You have to write three separate 100 point lists and send them to fight for different objectives. This adds a meta element of strategy.

If you get really fancy here, you could add a campaign map; squadrons would only be able to move to adjacent sectors.

I would love to see this done on a massive campaign map of some kind. Sort of like Empire at War.

Do you think you could make a Wordpress page for this campaign and link to it? I'd like to bookmark it and then join up. I have plenty of starfighters for this game, and I think I can participate in a 600 point fleet.

didn't know team covenant had something like this going. we can scrap this then, no problem!

Oh no, by all means, run your campaign. Mine is full, and there is clearly enough interest for more than one. I only posted the link to show you what was happening elsewhere. Use my rules wholesale or pick and choose mechanics you like. I am fine with it.

I had an Imperial player drop from my campaign, so if anyone is interested in participating, read the rules and shoot me a PM.
