New Player

By Daner0023, in X-Wing

I am thinking of doing an X Wing Demo and building some forces.

I have not played yet, but the game has gotten sufficiently popular in my area.

I plan to purchase the base set this weekend, but I don't know what to build after that initial purchase.

How many points are used in tournaments?

What are some good, solid lists at those levels I could build?

I will say that I am not a swarm player. I typically prefer quality over quantity. I am also looking to build Imperials and Rebels. Thanks for your help in advance.

100 points at tournaments.

Get 2 core sets at minimum. If you're not going Swarm, that should be sufficient.

There are dozens of different 100 point fleet archetypes, and that's before factoring in minor variations. Maybe ask some of your locals for advice?

The game is played primarily at 100 points, which means rebels can get from 2-5 ships, and the Imperials generally go 3-7 ships, though both 2 and 8 ship builds are possible with them (the rebels can only go 2-5 at 100 with any success, any less and you are stuck using underpowered HWKs)

Well, Rebels do the quality over quantity builds better than imps, and for cheaper on the dollar as well. The easiest way to get in with a powerful squad for rebels would be 1 core and 2 other boosters, consisting of 2 X-wings, 2 B-wings, 1 of each, or 1 and the Millenium Falcon. This lets you build one of several powerful 3-ship rebel builds. This would be 40 for the core, plus 15 for whichever small boosters you pick, or 30 for the falcon, for a total of 70-85 dollars to start.

As for imperials, starting with a core set and wanting to go with quality over quantity, you definitely want at least 1 Firespray. Getting a TIE interceptor is also a good investment, and that would get you a somewhat decent starting squad, using all 4 ships you have. A second firespray would be another way to do it, running both and the pair of TIEs from your starter. That gives you 85-100 dollar buy in for imps, remembering that the first 40 is split with the rebels, for a total of 115-145 dollars to run a decent 100 point build for both factions

Also TWO base sets is a good place to start. Gives you a nice chunk of a couple of clutch (and otherwise currently OOP) ships, a damage deck for you and your opponent if they don't have the game, two sets of dice, templates, etc. Very handy to have, all around.

Thank you so much for your help!

So, it seems two base sets to start.

I think my plan is to get the Millenium Falcon, 2x B Wings, and an A Wing. That should give me a few options on the Rebel side.

My plan on the Imperial side is to have my four Tie Fighters from base to mix in with 2x Firesprays and a Tie Interceptor for some variation there.

Anything else that should be included as staples?

I'd start at the beginning:

2 core sets

X-Wing Expansion

TIE Fighter Expansion

After that, get whatever you fancy. You can play with just one core set and whatever expansions you like, but I think you're going to feel the absence of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter expansions if you don't have them. Too many good pilots in there that can't be found elsewhere.

DagobahDave is right.

The X-Wing and Tie Fighter is for sale at Amazon right now, and I'd highly recommend getting those two expansion packs for the sake of the pilots they come with.

Then the 2 core large ships, YT-1200 and Firespray. After the other stuff you list is great.

Get yourself some random stuff, and we'll help you build a good fleet with it ;-)

This is what I was going to say. 2 core sets, you get more minis, BUT you will also get more dice. The reason you would want to get a X-Wing and Tie Fighter expansions instead of buying a 3rd core set, is because you might want to have the cards that go with the minis.

Part of X-Wing game, is the cards that come with it, as well as the minis.

After you play a few games, get what you like. If you are like me, and others, you will want all of them anyways. :P

The hard ones to get are Y-Wings and Tie Advanced. If you see them, gobble them up since they are the rarest ones to get right now, until they do the release which should be anytime soon.

Here's what's probably going to happen for you:

You will buy yourself a core set, then, having pre-identified with one faction over another, you will purchase 2-4 ships of your favorite type from that faction.

You will play someone else, they will beat you. You will still love every second of it.

You will start watching Team Covenant game coverage on youtube the way some folks watch ESPN.

You will want to get your friends into the game, so you start buying ships from your opposing faction.

You will then commit "whole hog" to the game and start buying everything you have money for. "I don't need cable do I?"

You will anger your spouse or significant other, or if you're very lucky like me, will be encouraged in your new hobby.

You will start looking at customization threads, maybe Rodent Mastermind or Viceroy Bolda's and wish you had still more time and money.

You will learn that you have found an awesome community here, that seems remarkably devoid of D-bags.

We will welcome you home.

Concur with the above whole-heartedly...

@Hazardpay

That's pretty funny. I have already watched the Team Covenant Top 4 match ups from Gen Con and I watched the Wave 2 and Wave 3 release tournaments.

I am really liking the high quality of the Rebel ships. I like the synergies I see with the Imperials.

I really like the three X Wings list with Wedge, Luke, and Biggs.

I have several friends that already play, but I have been resisting because I have been practicing for tourneys for Warmahordes.

I also like the Bounty Hunters and would like to see more development there, where they could be almost independent of the Empire.

I have picked up the following so far:

Core Set

X-Wing Expansion

Tie Fighter Expansion

Y Wing

Millennium Falcon

Tie Advanced

I am thinking that a B-Wing & another Core Set next, sound good?

Yup.. I have a third core set in the mail from ebay.. got it really cheap too.. lol sigh.. I have way to much stuff for as often as I play..

A second Core Set is definitely good, and getting at least 1 of each ship is a great idea as well. You may want to get some more Empire ships, though, as you'll be up to 5 ties and an Advanced...only. Enough for a fleet, but only the one. Compared to all of the variation you've got for the Rebellion....

True, I was thinking of picking up the Slave I and Core set next. That way I will have a big Imperial ship and Stealth Device cards.

I want to eventually have enough to field 300 points rebel and 300 points imperial at any given event, with good options for each ship.

I'm not entirely sure why...

...I already have almost enough ships to field any 100 point build I've seen on these forums...

I got lucky when I got in as the stuff had been setting on the shelf at the LGS for months with no takers. I had just finished painting 4 contract armies for other people and knew I didn't want to paint anything else for a while. I spy the X-wing core set. Buy it, take it home and my 8 year old and I tear into it. It took a few hours to work thru the rules and we played half dozen games on the end table. The hook was set so deep I couldn't sleep that nite and made a beeline to the LGS first thing in the morning. I picked up 2 more core sets and 3 of all the expansions all from the clearance table st 60% off. Drove home grinning like a mad man and thinking about the 2 Falcons, 2 Slave 1's, 3 interceptors and 3 A-wings I had just pre-ordered.

:D

Then came the depressing wait for Wave 2. What I'm trying to say is you can never have enough. I have curbed the insanity of it by only ordering 2 of the small expansions and 1 of the large for Wave 3..Some people like doing the min/max thing to cover every possible tournament requirement but since I was the only one buying it was more for large story based games. Since my first story line campaign the LGS hasn't been able to keep the stuff in stock.

:(

100 points for FFG sponsored events but local events could be just about anything. I started out running 40 point and 66 point events for awhile so people could slowly buy into the system plus it was getting hard to find pieces. Write up a list of what you have above the first core set and then I could help with lists.
