Lambda at Worlds?

By sunny ravencourt, in X-Wing

I saw a lot of use of the cards, and I saw plenty in people's cases, but I didn't see any being used in competition. To be fair, I was pretty focused on my own matches because ... ****.... this was my first convention like this and there isn't really anything more overwhelming than keeping track of all your junk in a room with 150 other xwing players. It was a TON of fun, but I was curious about the lambda.

Did anyone see one in play at worlds? How was it used?

My first match (against Froggies, if you know the TC/Vassal crew) he flew I think 2xBH with an Omicron Lambda that had Vader and some goodies. I took the shuttle out before he ever got to use Vader on me, but he got off some HLC shots with it, and shooting it up kept me from shooting up his BH for a couple turns, which I think made the difference.

I ran Omicron/Vader and 5 ties and ended up 3-2. 3 matches in a row I saw double firespray lists. It drives like a school bus, of course, but I just love it. TL shuttle with bombers would have been a bit stronger. Bombers seemed just as rare as Lambdas.

Why can I not remember what TL means?

Target Lock?

That would explain it.

Yeah the "hands out Target Locks" shuttle. Forgot the Pilot's name :)

Um, I'm pretty sure his name isn't "Dean." ;) Kidding.

Oddly enough, my last match was against Vader, Jonus, and Rhymer. So as rare as Bombers may have been, I did get to face a couple, loaded up with missiles.

Colonel Jendon, level 6.

What were you flying and how did it turn out for you if you don't mind me asking. I like the bombers but am trying to find a way to make them more viable with what I normally run.

I like running 2 or 3 alongside 4 or 3 ties in a Swarm :)

I did see a few bombers. More than lambda's. They were going for a massive bang and then cleanup. Makes sense.

No, I don't mind at all. I was flying 4x Blue Squadron B-Wings with Advanced Sensors.

That match was brutal - it looked like I skunked him, because I had all four Blues left on the board when I blew up Rhymer and won the game, but I believe that my squad had six hull between them. :P

I had two Blues with two hull left, and two Blues with one hull each, and the two one hulls EACH got lucky late and avoided certain death. I think one of them he blew a range 1 roll, getting only a crit on 3 attack dice - and I countered with an evade. He took a range 3 shot at the other one, scoring two hits, and I got an evade and a focus - and had focused him that turn, so he dodged that one. So it was very, very close.

His missiles were nasty - I ate one for a couple of damage that splashed over my whole squad. Then I crowded him and forced him to take a bad desperation shot with Rhymer that got 3 of my 4 Blues but also hit Vader and Jonus in the splash. I jammed up his lanes with B-Wings so that Vader and the bombers kept bonking and losing actions (especially bad for Vader + Squad Leader), got a crit that robbed Jonus of his reroll-granting ability and just took them down one by one; Jonus, then Vader, then Rhymer.

But like I said; when Rhymer went down I had 6 hull left between 4 B-Wings, so it was a close, brutal match.

The AdvS is really what won me that match, because I could focus (usually) my guys and then hurl them in the way, and if I hit one of his ships, or my own, they still got that boost when the shooting started.

When it was down to just Rhymer I managed to box him in, and then got into a cycle where I had two B-wings K-turning each turn to get a shot on him - and AdvS let them focus first (or target lock if I didn't think he'd have a shot at that ship). Then the following turn, the OTHER two B-Wings would focus and K-Turn, while the first two pulled usually a 1-bank in the direction I thought he'd be going, losing stress and immediately focusing up again (or taking TL).

No matter where he went he generally had 2-3 (or all four) focused and/or target locked B-Wings with shots on him, while he was forced to take a potshot (usually while stressed) at whatever B was in front of him that move. It let me chip away at him while forcing him to spread the damage around, and locking him in that cage with B-Wings crisscrossing around him was the beginning of the end.

Flew a 5 tie variant of "Lord Vader's Escort". I went 4-1 losing only to Dallas's swarm but missed out on tie breakers.. Shuttle swarm was really good.

You flew a shuttle with 5 ties? What was your build exactly. That sounds pretty neat.

There was a bomber list in the top 8

There was a bomber list in the top 8

There definitely was, which meant that he was 5-0 or 4-1 and lucky. If you can go 5-0 at worlds, that pretty much validates the build imo. :)
