2013 final match

By Silver leader, in X-Wing

PLEASE tell me the video of that last match is getting posted?!?! that was nuts, 1 B-wing vs 4 tie fighters and it won!!!!! That isn't supposed to happen.

And its worth watching every second of it.

I was there and I'm rewatching it lol

What a match...down to the last hull point.

Actually 1 b-wing vs. 3 but still.

Yeah that was awesome. I kinda figured the bwing had it, those things are nasty. Still the odds were technically against him, and the tension of the rolls, plus the final hit making or breaking the game for paul was intense.

awesome final. those B-Wings sure are slippery. well played by both guys. very enjoyable to watch this final match.

Beautifully played match and it came down to a couple of low initiative no name pilots duke-ing it out for that final hit. That's why I say this is one of the finest, most well balanced games currently in production anywhere.

stuff of legends indeed! Wish I was able to attend...

Congrats to Paul for the win and to both guys for making it one of the most exciting competitive matches (of any sort) I have ever watched. Paul, you are an X-Wing hero for finally putting down the swarm at a high level event, :)

Solid builds and solid flying... Didn't see any major rules mistakes or flying blunders unlike the nationals videos. It pretty much came down to dice rolls. Both should be proud of their performances.

Fantastic match! Kudos to Dallas and Paul for putting on a great show. All in this was a fantastic tournament with some wonderful examples of sportsmanship and X-Wing community class.

Oh cool, cheers for posting, really helpful to see how others play.

The blinded pilot was extreme lucky. It was an epic battle.

But....never tell me the odds is the topic of this great final.

Awesome game! Paul made me think that perhaps i should change side to Rebels! GRATZ PAUL!

nice to watch, although heavily dominated by the dice luck of Paul. Killing off Howl and Curse with one attack each soon in the game was incredibly lucky. Also his defense rolls at the end just enabled him 3 turns which he wouldn't had with more average rolls. But then he lost Biggs after rolling 16 def dice with no evasion showing right at the start.

He really didn't do well with his rookie, poor dude never got anything in his sights before blowing up.

You really see the great performance that B Wings are capable of when equipped with AS. I'm sure the model will sell even better now.

On the other hand Dallas twice managed to barrel roll himself out of the chance to attack - well, that happens more often than one would think with Ties and BR. Great formation flying in the beginning, he lost it somewhat later.

Really nice to see, thanks for sharing.

Thank you for posting this excellent video! The solid game content is so cool, this is like watching a great film...kinda.

:)

This was truly a fight for the ages.

You have no idea how much I was kicking myself as soon as I picked up the blocking Tie to barrel-roll. I was thinking to myself (oh ##&*$%&*@#*#&$, its too late to put it back now). For some reason my brain was thinking way too many senarios at once, and somehow I was thinking that the stress next to the Bwing was the stress for my other Tie.

That and two other definite screw-ups (being too risky). I'm sure I'll be doing a write up of it. Do wanna see the team covenant recording, get a chance to see some more outside reviews. It was a extremely fun and tense game, brain is still sore trying to think through it all ;)

Really happy the rebel won there, i mean Dark curse at the beginning was one bad roll for imperials, but that 16 dice no dodge on bigs, come on. The imperial player it well and i have nothing against him but i just cant stand if someone has that amount of dumb luck. Just unbelievable. At least that stopped in the end...

And this unbelievable amount of luck seems to extend to every swarm you see, First game in the video, the guy that plays against Jonus also gets all hits, tons of evades, and the other guy blanks, blanks, blanks. Sure a huge list but they also roll incredibly well on top of that!

Plus i am really happy that at last op swarm got beaten for once! I mean its not a really fun list to watch anyway, and it has been dominating the scene for far too long just because FFG made all Tie Fighters cost one point less than they should and now they can't change it, I mean you can see that the odds really are against anything playing against a swarm, it's just not normal. Its only slightly op but it still is, even if it lost in the end due to the skill and luck of Paul.

Congratulations Paul, you really deserve this!

Oh man, luck is definitely infuriating in the game when you fly correctly. Just yesterday, I played a game..

Second game vs. someone from my club
my list is:
Dark Curse
Night Beast
Mauler w/ Vet
Howlrunner
Soontir Fel w/ PTL and Stealth
vs. Hans with Luke and Mel Falcon, a Rookie and a Red Squadron Pilot
Initial combat goes very well for me. I down the Red before he even gets to fire and put 2 damage on the Rookie.
The Falcon and remaining Rookie fires to virtually no effect. I think I might of taken a damage on Howl.
Next turn, I make manuevers in a way that the Rookie has no shot on me because he over shoots. Falcon turns into me and Fel runs into him.
Rest of my guys shoot and strip the Falcon of shields for the most part.
Next round, not sure what happened but everything falls apart epically: I move Fel and he barely overlaps with the fat Falcon and he doesn't move. Hans shoots Fel through an asteroid, I roll 5 dice on Evade and roll a focus and 4 blanks. Fel dies. His Rookies a K-turn, has stress, shoots a hail mary from range 3 into Mauler and rolls 3 hits. Mauler rolls 4 dice and rolls straight blanks and dies. Next turn, Night Beast dies in the same way. Shots hit, I roll blanks, he takes 2 damage, 1 from crit, and dies from console fire. At this point I'm furious, because this is getting ridiculous. In two rounds, my opponent manages to kill 3 of my ships from full to dead due to dice. Aside from the slight miscalculation on Fel, I haven't made a single piloting mistake, but the heart of the cards is crapping on me I eventually kill the Rookie but I die to the Hans. X_X

I was wondering if that tie barrel roll was for a block. Probably should have rolled back to enhance arc.

Dice are a big part of the game and they can ruin your day way more than poor flying can. Swarm avoids this by throwing so many dice that even bad luck will pass quickly and then rerolling half the offensive dice. Swarm is solid because even luck usually can't kill it.

Oh yes, absolutely right and that is exactly what i dislike about Tie swarms. No matter how skilled someone is, you need more luck than the swarm player to win. I mean there is still no list that can consistently beat a good 7 Tie Swarm like the one at worlds. Odds are always against you and one turn of bad rolling is enough to lose the game, but one turn of bad rolling for the swarm still hardly means anything.

Every good game needs to have its rock paper scissors. And here its rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, paper beats rock but swarm kinda laughs at all of them.

I really would like to see win percentages of a 7 tie swarm in tournaments. Some versions of it just always make top 4. I mean its not the thread for a rant here but if we had evidence beyond the fact that they SEEM to do exceptionally well, that would help a lot. Just personally speaking, i find swarms a bit too strong since the beginning and as i said i think every single Tie, from Academy to Howlrunner should just cost 1 point more to balance it out just fine.

I think Paul, as skilled as he is, finally only beat it because in the end luck really was on his side like you need it to beat a swarm, and perhaps his opponent made a tiny mistake with the barrel roll.

But enough said and all my kudos to the excellent players at this tournament!

Luck of the dice is important but I think people tend to overstate the luck involved.

In this match I think Paul appeared to be lucky because he had Advanced Sensors and so was able to Focus almost every turn. Dallas had to pull lots of K-Turns and so he was less able to modify his dice. On the first volley of shots, Paul also forced Dallas to shoot at Biggs at Range 3 through an obstacle. I think these two factors together show that the best way to roll "lucky" dice is through good action management and good maneuvering.

Meanwhile, you guys are right that Dallas had some good opportunities to try to block Paul, but I think that blocking would probably not be very effective. Because of Paul's Advanced Sensors, getting blocked by Dallas wouldn't deny Paul his action. Paul could either choose to Focus before overlapping or he could barrel roll before he performed his maneuver and avoid overlapping altogether.

Dallas played well (with the sole exception of that barrel roll) but Paul's squad was tough and his action management was better. Two good players put on a great show.
