Dice interpretation

By User, in Game Masters

Hello guys. I have read the core rule book and I likely missed something, but I'm not clear on who interprets which rolls. My understanding is that all npc and failed pc checks are interpreted by the gm and all successful of checks by the players. Am I wrong?

Its a collaboration, GM is the final arbitrator of the results, You use the dice results to narrate whats happened.

While it depends on the group, I wouldn't have a problem with suggestions on taking dice interpretation from everyone. Obviously you need a group that values The Rule of Cool over winning the game at all costs, and the GM should have the final world of course - but yeah, I see no down side going "So, what does that mean?" to the rest.

OP, you're not entirely right. Even if a PC roll fails and the GM narrates the result, the PC still has the power to spend uncanceled Advantages/Triumph, and the GM spends uncanceled Threat/Despair. Just like when an NPC fails the roll, the PC(s) get to spend uncanceled Threats/Despairs, and the GM spends uncanceled Advantages/Triumphs.

When I GM, I spend Advantage and Triumph for the NPCs and Threat and Despair for my players. My players spend their own Advantage and Triumph and any Threat and Despair my NPCs roll. All subject to my approval, but unless they try something silly like "I rolled a Triumph so an airspeeder falls out of the sky and kills all the NPCs" I never overrule them.

Sometimes, especially when making checks to gather information on a subject, I typically ask them if they want to spend their Advantages/Triumph on something specific they have in mind or if they want to use it for additional information on the subject. They pretty much always go for more information, which technically speaking means I'm spending it for them. The important thing, in my view, is that the players always get to choose themselves.

I would suggest listening to a few of Skill Monkey's posts (Link below), he explains with quite a few example of how the dice mechanic can work.

Oh, and as far as The Rule of Cool goes, EotE really almost eliminates the need for this in how the dice mechanic works by basically incorporating The Cool into every roll.
