The big problem with the new draft packs...

By Dstinct, in Android: Netrunner The Card Game

I think adding draft to Netrunner is a great idea, but by using their POD system, FFG is creating a pretty big problem for the cards that come in the data packs and box sets. I don't think draft cards should be allowed to be used in constructed play.

I play my decks in standard opaque dragon shields, so the slightly off printing colors of the POD cards don't pose a problem. The problem is that the POD cards are a different size than the cards that are printed overseas. After a bit of practice, I am now able to feel out my promo cards that are in my deck fairly accurately. They also wear slightly differently in the sleeves because they are wider. Although I still collect the promos that have art that I like, I no longer play with them in my decks when I am playing in tournaments because they are marked, only around the table with friends. I've never brought it up at game nights at stores because I don't want to be labeled as "that guy", but I don't think promos and draft cards should be allowed to be played in tournaments and game nights due to the size difference because they are essentially marked. They should only be allowed at home.

If a player wants to use these cards in constructed play, their decks should only be made with draft cards. Otherwise we could end up with decks with marked agendas and icebreakers and all kinds of problems.

It appears that the Netrunner draft packs arent really random, so I don't see why going forward they cant just have them printed overseas like they do the other cards, or FFG have to invest in a new cutter that is exactly the same as the one their printer uses.

I'm looking forward to trying some drafting, but I don't think this was fully thought out or executed well. Does anyone else see the problems that could arise?

I see your concern and I agree with you. It seems like they made this on a whim and they're just testing it out right now. Like I said in another thread. I think just the starter set should have been made for home play. I don't like the fact that unreleased cards are going to be in some of these random packs. This is the reason I stopped with the ccg...

Unreleased cards can't be used in tournaments. They need to be released in datapack form to be legal. That's the way it's always been.

Not just tournaments; they won't be legal for anything EXCEPT draft format until they hit general release.

Obviously this doesn't matter for casual games with your opponent's consent, but you can't drop a bomb by playing a drafted card that's not yet available for standard play.

apparently some cards from the currently "in flight" cycle for Game of Thrones have shown up in packs, but Internutt is right, the Tournament Rules would exclude those from play.

Anyone know if Spin Cycle or C&C cards are showing up in the Cyber War cube? Or is it just Core+Genesis?

BGG may have a complete set list and it contains only Core+Genesis, just like FFG said it would.

How do you know that this is a fact?

Well, like we said above, the AGOT Draft cube includes the current cycle, including packs which aren't released, so it was fair to speculate that Cyber War might have some Mala Tempora/Fear & Loathing/Double Time cards. The AGOT boards were abuzz with the spoilers we got to see from packs 4/5/6 of the Kingsroad cycle.

Number of players who freaked out because of the impact on standard play: exactly zero.

But, as pointed out above, the Cyber War cube includes ONLY Core and Genesis cycle cards, so Kaijudo is wrong for the time being and if it ever changes in future editions of Draft, it would still be a moot issue because of the Tournament rules.

I also think the "marked cards" issue is overblown. I can't tell myself, and I use opaque Dragon Shields as well.
