Lets start a slice off (Slicing skill check)

By Diggles, in Game Masters

I cant recall seeing anyone post NON-combat based skill challenges. I was never good at making skill challenges in other systems so wondering if anyone here has some bright ideas!

Has anyone come up with any for slicing vs opposition? I'm trying to spice the game up for one of my characters who is a specialty 'industrial sabotage' droid whose primary skill is computers, with good amount in cunning too such as skullduggery/perception/deception/stealth.

I'm wondering if anyone has some tips or good ideas on HOW TO RUN a slicing skill challenge, in particular if there is opposition; whether that is an automated defense routine or ANOTHER slicer on the other end. (I'm picturing the computer operator from the Movie 'Dredd 3d' who used the computer system to track enemy thru his 50 floor highrise).

I'm only now just brainstorming tasks, so I suppose I'll list some here

  • Gain initial access (requires physical connection)
  • Remain undetected
  • Remove or shutdown a current user (the opposition)
  • Make system hostile to former users
  • Reboot, overload or power down entire system
  • Overload a computer station to kill/shock/stun user
  • Activate/control subsystems: defense, communication, surveillance , routine/mundane systems (lights, non-security doors, HVAC)

For a versus slicing battle I would Probably try something that looks like the Vehicle chase rules. The base "terrain" difficulty being the systems automated security software and security levels. The range bands would be different server blocks and network tiers. The player and opponent could then attempt actions like what's been listed. For the players "Shooting" each other I'd have the attacks function using the computers skill, with a range of "short" and a base difficulty of average, with damage applying to strain.

Might need some tweaking, but that will prolly give you the effect you want without the encounter dragging on too long and the other players getting bored.
