I watched at bat rep recently where a player with a bunch of academy ties took several evade actions where I would have gone with focus, hands down. Then I realized that with wedge shooting, the evade action actually came in handy once or twice, but the ties lost out on offense.

I usually only take an evade action if I'm using the falcon and I already have a focus lined up for shooting. Are they more worthwhile than that? Do other people use the evade action? I think that with three dice, it's always worth taking focus, especially because it can be used for attacking and defending.

Opinions?

The other exception is soontir fel with ptl. I'll almost always evade and focus for a net of one evade and two focus tokens. Unless there are some good boosting or barrel rolling opportunities, of course.

most of the time i use focus. imperial squads tend to concentrate firing arcs on a single target where possible. focus fire ensures u get the best opportunity to get in some early hits.

i really think this is still quite an unknown in x-wing. i guess u evade with ur guys u really want kept on the table the most? howlrunner for example. iv always thought PTL on howlrunner would be a good idea as she can focus and evade for defense in the same round although i rarely see this combo used.

wave 3 has made doubling up focus actions in the same turn easier to achieve which is quite powerful - recon specialist, kyle katahn.

I've done the math, actually.

If you are rolling 4 dice or more, a defensive Focus is better
If you are rolling 3 dice or fewer, Evade all day.

The only times in which Evade are better than Focus at 4 or more dice are when you need to block 1 more damage than you have dice, or when you need to block exactly 1 damage.

Of course, this ignores abilities that would prevent you from using specific tokens or using dice to cancel (Looking at you, Ten, Carnor, and Autoblaster!). Even at 4 dice, blocking 2, 3, and 4 damage are all likelier with Focus than with Evade (though, admittedly, not by much. A 5% greater chance of blocking exactly 3 damage was the largest difference).
