You need Descent: Journeys in the Dark to play, all other boxes are expansions. You absolutely need the base game for a start, dice are in there, as are OL cards, as are miniatures and tiles used throughout all other boxes.

great! So I all the others are just add-on then. ONce I get Descent: Journeys into the Dark, I can worry about getting the others too. Now is there just one Decent Journeys into the Dark, or multiple Editions and if so which one should I get?

You must purchase second edition (which is about the only one available on FFG or at retailers).

Be careful not to buy any 1st edition stuff, as it is not compatible with the 2nd edition system.

2nd edition expansions are: Lair of the Wyrm, Labyrinth of Ruin and the Trollfens.

What's nice with those expansions is that they each simply can be added to the basic game without needing other expansions.
